Hawk Freshman Taken on a Walk with Bulldogs, Losing 36-2
Canyon Lake Freshman had a tough time with the Somerset Freshman team losing 36-2 at Hawk
Stadium last Thursday evening.
Those two points did not result from a safety, rather an opportunistic Tyler McCleary caught a wayward pass on a two point conversion and ran untouched 97 yards for two points.
A couple of Bulldogs looked like they might have a chance of catching McCleary, but after reaching the 10 yard line int route to the goal line, McCleary seemed to turn on the afterburners leaving the opposition with no chance of catching him.
“I just held my hands up and if I would not have had on my gloves, then I would not of caught it (the ball),” McCleary said calmly.
The question then was posed on what those gloves had on them and after shaking hands with this young man you could tell McCleary had some Lester Hayes stickum on those gloves.
Ok, not really, but all the ‘Old’ Timers will know what is meant by that last statement and the younger aged people will now have a chance of finding out on their search engines.
Back to the game.
Canyon Lake was facing a team that looked like Somerset players were graduating from High School.
That had more to do with how this score became lopsided as both lines were having a hard time in winning those battles in the trenches.
Hayden Reed led Hawk rushers with 45 yards and Heath McDonough had 34 yards receiving with two receptions leading Canyon Lake in those categories.
There was some plays that were worth noting. In particular, watching the kick-off returns you could see players like Tyler Shipman laying out a Bulldog on the field as a Hawk runner was making his move on the return.
That one play was on the last return of the day and it seemed like Shipman was letting off a lot of steam in planting this Dog on the turf.
“He (the Somerset player) was running and I could see he was smaller, so I got to hit him,” Bulldog Shipman said. “I’m disappointed in the outcome, but we are getting better.”
Watching the smaller battles in this war still makes football a fun sport to watch and getting better is all anyone can ask.
Now come next week and see how much better this team will become.
That Bulldog will be replaced by a Bear (La Vernia) which is always a good battle to watch from the stands.
