Football Coaches Corner with the Hawks Charles Drum

COACHES CORNER

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Charles Drum after a practice this week and was

able to talk about the Hawks and their upcoming game with La Grange.

The ReSporter: Tell us what you are expecting in your game this week with La Grange.

Coach Drum: “La Grange is the best team on paper in our bracket…they are very well coached and their defense flies to the ball and offensively they can be physical and fast.”

The ReSporter: I guess that is why they are ranked 9th in the State?

Coach Drum: “Yes, when you get in the second round you start to get the best teams.”

The ReSporter: With your game last week with Pleasanton, did you feel your tough non-district schedule helped in playing the Eagles?

Coach Drum: “We played a very tough schedule and many of the teams that we played were more physical than Pleasanton. So those games certainly helped us.”

The ReSporter: If you took the team that played Pleasanton last week and started the season over with that group of players, what do you think your record would of been this season?

Coach Drum: “We played a bunch of good teams, but I feel we would have been 6-4 or maybe even 7-3.”

The ReSporter: What do you feel the keys to this game with the Leopards will be this Friday?

Coach Drum: “We need to control the clock to keep their offense off the field…in our earlier game this year we were hurt with turnovers and special teams, so we will need to be better in those two areas also.”

The ReSporter: How has the defense been progressing this year as you prepare against a strong offensive team?

Coach Drum: “The defense has been coming around and we feel they have done a good job in these past few games.”

The ReSporter: Then tell us what happened in the game with Boerne when they jumped out on us fast and scored 28 points.

Coach Drum: “It took a quarter or two to get our players up to speed in that game. Don’t forget we had some injuries and we were putting players in the game that had not played in a while. We also did not come out ready to play and Boerne came out and executed…they have a good offense.”

The ReSporter: So what type of game do you think our defense will play this week?

Coach Drum: “The defense has gained confidence this year and lost confidence this season so if our offense can have some good drives like the La Vernia game when we took over 12 minutes off the clock, then we have a chance.”

The ReSporter: In your game with Pleasanton your special teams had a good game and then you also had your first field goal of the year that won the game…

Coach Drum: “It helped on how Thorpe has performed this year especially with extra points that made the decision of kicking a field goal easier. He (Thorpe) proved that he is not going to get nervous.”

The ReSporter: Congrats Coach and good luck this Friday.
