Hawks Lose Game at Buzzer to Lampasas, 59-57
The Hawks had their 7 point lead slip away in the last two minutes as Lampasas closed the game out with a last
second shot to win, 59-57.
Canyon Lake was still playing short handed as this Saturday game was postponed one day as the Hawk’s football team was playing in a second round game a day earlier.
There are several players that will be bringing reinforcements to the hard wood by next week.
The game against Lampasas was a stark improvement from CL’s first 40 point loss to Cedar Creek.
Improvements in several areas was evident. Shooting percentage and taking care of the ball were both part of those building blocks.
Hawks Cedar Creek Lampasas Improvement
Shooting Pct 25.0% 43.5% 18.5%
Free Throw Pct 50.0% 83.3% 33.3%
Now granted, teams have different skill sets on defense and offense, but this had to bring a smile to Head Coach Lucas Chapman.
“We shot the ball well which helped a bunch.” Coach Chapman assessed. “Our defense was really good.
Yes, the defense did do a better job as their last game Cedar Creek poured in 91 points.
This game did have a Hawk lead up to the last seconds of the contest.
“It’s tough to lose a close one like this,” Coach Chapman said. “We need to learn to finish out games like this.”
Depth issues was also evident as Canyon Lake plans on playing more up tempo this season. Having several players still in football will delay that issue.
“We played a lot more man than we did in the Cedar Creek game and it looked good,” Chapman said. “We still did not press as much as we would like due to depth issues, but when we did press it was effective.”
Andrew Riali (19 pts) and Garrett Winters (17pts) both finished in double figures as these two players poured in 10 three pointers.
Trendon Martinez was in his first game and that type of depth might have been the ailment needed as Canyon Lake will now await more reinforcements.
Lampasas did have a stud who finished with 31 points or over half of the teams total points.
“He was really long and athletic guard,” Chapman finished. “He carved us up the last few minutes of the game and drove through our defense at the end to make a hanging finger roll that rolled around the rim and fell through.”
A last second three quarters court desperation shot from Luke Curry was missed at the buzzer.
Good news? In their first game that last second shot would not had mattered.
Canyon Lake will be playing this week against Llano at the small Hawk gym this Tuesday night.
