Lady Hawks Win Two Games Saturday for 3rd Place Finish
The Canyon Lake Lady Hoopsters won two games on Saturday in the Canyon Lake Classic to finish in 3rd Place.
Freshman Sarah Russell responds with solid game as she prepares for district play
Both games were slow starters in the first quarter, as the Hawks could only muster 5 points in each affair and in both instances were having to play catch up to finish on top.
These two games were must wins over schools that are smaller classifications and in the case of Lago Vista a team that had been on the losing side of that ledger earlier this season to the Hawks.
The Vikings jumped out to a double digit lead with 9 and 10 point runs that ended when CL had their two baskets in a row with 7 minutes left in the second quarter.
Canyon Lake finished that second quarter outscoring Lago Vista 18-7 as both teams retreated to their dressing rooms for halftime.
The Hawks continued their pace in the second half taking a lead on a bucket from Amber Ramsey with 6 minutes left in the quarter and what would be Lago Vista’s last lead in this contest.
Here is a first for the Hawks, as free throws helped in securing and stretching the lead over LV.
The Hawks finished with 22 shots made from the charity stripe led by Freshman Sarah Russell.
“I tried to drive to get fouled,” Russell said confidently. “Our goal is to just keep getting better and improving with our shooting.”
That strategy of driving for a foul helped Russell have a game when she drew a blank from the field but almost hit double figures shooting free throws.
Freshman players will many times have a hard time adjusting to the speed of Varsity games when this time last year they were playing in Middle School.
“My teammates are helping me out,” Russell continued. “I knew the game would be faster and Summer League games helped give me a good feel for the speed.”
Another player that has risen within the ranks has been Senior Emily Muniz, as her play in the paint has been solid these past few games.
Muniz is another tall player that Coach Mary Beth Gallagher will need to rely on as district play commences in a couple of weeks.
Nine rebounds from Muniz and 13 from Junior Kyndall Drum helped CL control the boards especially on the offensive side.
“I have been able to get back in a groove in the game,” Muniz said cooly. “I just have to keep putting all those little skills together.”
Canyon Lake will now have just one more game before district play begins when Fredericksburg comes to town on January 3rd.
“We need to keep trying to get everyone involved in the games with all the different match ups,” Coach Gallagher said. “We will need to teach our guards to play bigger because when district begins, they will have to go in and sometimes get pounded.”
Canyon Lake now will have to replicate those aspects of the game in practice and hopefully those teaching moments will translate to enough victories for a playoff spot at the end of this season.
