Hawks Close CL Classic with Two Losses

Canyon Lake finished the Hawk Classic on a down note on Saturday with two losses against Randolph and Liberty Hill.

The Hawks need games to get used to each players nuances and with time hoping that ingredient will jell in time before district play commences.

“We have a long way to go,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We still have a goal of working hard and to peak in January. There is still some stuff that we need to add.”

Canyon Lake is still on a first name basis among the players.

“We did a lot in those last two games,” Chapman closed. “We have played more games than practices.”

That statement gives a fan an idea of what is being shown in games now being improved upon as this season matures.

In the Randolph game, CL gave up 16 points from the charity stripe in just that first half and not having a chance to guard a player when points are scored makes it tough to come back.

Canyon Lake had their biggest lead (3 points) after a Sean Nolan free throw in the first quarter with two minutes remaining.

After scoring that point, the Hawks were outscored 23-7 going into halftime and needing another double digit comeback.

Luke Curry has shown some glimpses during this last week and his 9 points helped in giving CL a chance in the fourth quarter as the Hawks closed to within 7 points with three minutes left to play.

“I have worked on my shooting quite a bit,” Senior Curry said. “Getting more into the season and telling myself not to be shy has helped. We just need more games.”

Skyler Tschoepe also came through with a lot of energy during that span as Tschoepe finished with 10 points.

Liberty Hill was a load for the Hawks as this team ran out to a double digit lead in the first three minutes scoring the first 10 points of the contest.

Canyon Lake could not get any momentum as the LH press kept the turnovers in high numbers and easy shots for the visitors.

Trendon Martinez did have a good game scoring 11 points and contributing in every stat category.

The Hawks will have two more games this week as they will suit up to play at La Vernia on Tuesday and then back home for a game on Friday with Lampasas.

That game on Friday will be an early tip-off (6:30 pm) as the players will be off for the CHRISTmas Holidays. The Hawks will be in action for the Blanco Tournament to start the New Year.
