Close But No Cigar, Hawks Lose 3 close Games to Lampasas

FRESHMAN

Canyon Lake had a rough night losing close games with Lampasas as the Hawk Freshman team had a one point loss to the Badgers.

“We played hard and kept ourselves in the game,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “A late turnover with just a few seconds on the clock sealed the deal.”

The Hawks seem to have a disease that is creeping onto each squad this year as first quarter jitters are allowing opponents to seize a lead and CL having to come back to get back into the game.

Canyon Lake had to overcome a five point hill to start the fourth quarter and just could not climb another hill for a win.

“The kids are working and we were able to get shots up today as opposed to Tuesday night and we forced some turnovers,” Coach Barthels closed. “We just need more time in the gym together and continue to play hard.”

JUNIOR VARSITY

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity could not hold onto a lead as Lampasas took the lead on a shot with 13 seconds to win an exciting game, 45-43.

The Badgers finished the game with eight unanswered points as CL could not milk the clock for a game they had the lead for over 27 minutes in this contest.

Justin Ferris (11) and Robert Woods (12) finished with double digit points while Dave Pfaff controlled the boards cleaning up 11 rebounds in the game.

The Hawks seemed to be in control for most of the game, but last quarter shooteritis spelled their doom as just holding onto the ball would of helped in securing a win.

Turnovers (29) and poor second half shooting did not help in a game that was in Canyon Lake’s hands.

Now the Junior Varsity will have a few days before they will be able to get that bad taste of this loss as Christmas Break beckons.

VARSITY

Canyon Lake started another game with a lid on the basket as the Hawks first points came on a Skyler

Hawks Andrew Riali

Hawks Andrew Riali

Tschoepe shot with over half of the first quarter in the can.

That cold shooting was too much for the Hawks to overcome as much of the rest of this contest had a team taking care of the ball with only eight turnovers for the game. That has been a number for a quarter of play for many games this year.

Lampasas was not as active with a press which certainly helped in the lack of turnovers numbers.

“We have to play fast,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “When we can get up and down the court and play at that faster pace then we can play better.”

Andrew Riali finished the game with a double/double scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

It seems that Riali might have come out of shooting slump over the past few games.
The last two games has Riali with 35 points which should be good news as this season matures into district in a couple of weeks.

“The first of the year I was missing my shots because I was not squaring to the basket,” Senior Riali said succinctly. “I just need to slow it (my shot) down.”

Canyon Lake has been anemic as each half has started and this game was no exception as the Hawks came out of their halftime talk by allowing the Badgers to score the first five points which would put CL with their largest deficit of 15 points, 38-23.

That is when the Hawks started a comeback by outscoring Lampasas, 21-12 to close within one point with six minutes left in the game, 45-44.

Getting the lead was not attainable but being able to close back to within striking distance will be a good sign for future games.

“We have to play four quarters,” Riali surmised. “We just have to start our halves better…we haven’t peaked yet like we did last year so we are still building.”

Canyon Lake has tweaked the squad when they moved Robert Woods and Nic Adams to the Junior Varsity, which will allow more playing time for these two players.

“It makes our rotations easier,” Coach Chapman said. “Both of those players were excited to be able to play more and that will also allow us to get into more of a rhythm.”

Canyon Lake will now take a Christmas break and get back into action for the Blanco Tournament to start the New Year.
