Hawks Sweep Gonzales with Varsity and JV Victories

Canyon Lake solved their starting slow mantra when they accumulated 23 points in the first quarter against Gonzales and coasted to their final non-district win, 52-39 last Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.

“We finally came out from the start at home and made a statement,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I feel a lot better now than I did two weeks ago and we have come a long way…we are ready to play.”

CL is ready to play in District as this pre-district season comes to a close….that first game will be Wimberley this Friday and Gonzales might give you a good idea of how your Hawks might perform when they take to the hardwood.

Wimberley 54 Gonzales 47 was the score earlier this year and that will stand as your best common opponent for the Hawk’s next game to start District 27-3A this coming Friday in Wimberley.

Skyler Tschoepe and Andrew Riali both finished in double figure scoring with 15 and 14 respectfully.

The Hawks hit Gonzales with a slew of three point shots to start the game and then stepped back and played the Apaches even for the rest of this contest.

Many times the main stat talked about is points, but you will see several Hawk players doing hustle plays that many times will not translate to their stat line.

Isaac and Javier Mendez would be two players that epitomize this concept on this particular night you would of noticed Senior Tyler Clark.

Clark was all over the court much like Matt Noyola patrolled the courts two years ago.

“I do feel I need to be a spark plug and bring energy to the court and make things happen,” Energizer Bunny Clark sparked. “We came out clicking tonight and had an upper hand, but we still did not keep that same intensity in the second half.”

Clark was talking about the 33-29 score in favor of Gonzales for those last three quarters.

“We need to crash the boards and make it an inside game and that will get everyone energized,” Clark finished.

Tschoepe also topped the Hawks with 6 steals in this game and this ‘steal’ category is one stat Canyon Lake is leading all the other Hawk teams and this game finished with 16 thefts.

The Hawks are averaging 11 steals for the season and their previous high was the 9 steals per game during the 2009 campaign. In fact, CL has already doubled their per game average compared to last season.

This Canyon Lake team has several players that are interchangeable and now the curtain will go up this Friday in Wimberley when the Hawks take on the Texans.

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity helped in sweeping the Gonzales Apaches when they finally took control with a, 21-4 third quarter in this match.

The Hawks came from the halftime break holding onto a 4 point lead but when the horn sounded the lead had ballooned to 21 points and an easy fourth quarter to end this game.

“In the first half we struggled getting stops,” JV Coach Brian Hooper said. “Coming out in the second half we played better defense and executed on offense.”

“Justin Ferris and Robert Woods had some timely shots to get a run going for us in the third,” Coach Hooper closed.

Ferris was hot during this affair as he finished with 21 points for a good overall game and now CL prepares for District 27-3A traveling to Wimberley this Friday night.
