Missed it by that much, Hawks Lose, 47-46
A common phrase when thinking about how close someone or team came to winning or making a winning shot.
Wimberley was on the foul line with a one point lead when their shooter missed with six seconds left in the game.
Sean Nolan got the rebound and passed it off for one last chance with Andrew Riali in place with a pass that was fumbled and then grabbing the ball from the floor and heaving a shot from 30 feet which found nothing but the bottom of the net.
Game over and a last second win…..except the shot was just after the horn sounded ending the game.
“The biggest difference with this game compared to our first game was reducing our turnovers,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We were more aggressive in getting the ball up the court.”
Canyon Lake was a different team this night. This was the team this community had been waiting to see since district play had started.
Compare these stats from the two games with Wimberley:
Texan Game 1 Texan Game 2 Turnovers 38 18 Points Scored 46 46 Lost by 24 points 1 point
That was a trick request since you only needed to focus on one stat. Turnovers and then look at a score that improved 23 points.
Pretty simple game when you can capsule one stat to show the difference in how a game is played to give your team a chance to win.
First Game: Game over after first 4 minutes of contest.
Secong Game: Game over after Referees deduced that the horn had sounded before shot was made.
This game was in survival mode when the Texans had led by 7 points ending the second quarter and then quickly hitting a 3 pointer with :17 seconds into the third stanza giving Wimberley their largest lead of the night, 32-22.
Enter energizer battery Tyler Clark who took over the game for the next two minutes and willed CL back into the game with steals and lay ups.
“In my mind I was looking at the score and started to think with a Mike (Russell) mindset and play
exactly like him,” Senior Clark said while still thinking about how the team and fans honored a young man who was lost tragically earlier this school year. “We did everything we wanted to do and had been working the last couple of days on how to play better against the press.”
It was that Wimberley press in their last game that made the first game into a laugher.
“I feel we got a lot better and I obviously had the most fun in this game than any other that I have played in,” Tyler continued. “Yes, it was a loss but at least we had a chance.”
The Hawks used Clark’s energy which resulted in a 10-1 run to pull within a point in this Devil’s Backbone Battle.
Canyon Lake would reclaim the lead at the 6:07 mark in the 4th quarter as this game did not have a team more than two points separating each other.
The Hawks were able to reduce the number of miscues by over half and found themselves in a game that could of been a win with a shot made or missed here or there.
In that first game with Wimberley, CL was down 12 points after the first period and never recovered to make that contest competitive.
Both teams started cold with a tied score of 0-0 with just over four minutes left to play in that first period.
When a game is this close, then it makes the outcome become one of many events as the contest come to its conclusion.
Now Canyon Lake will need to find out how to bottle this effort and get three wins in their last four games to have a chance to go dancing.
Maybe find out what Clark had for supper could be a start.
