Hawk’s Freshman Beat Wimberley, 49-41
Canyon Lake’s Freshman squad came out of the gate shooting and used that 11 point first quarter lead
for their second victory over the Texans this season.
In their first match, CL forged a hard fought overtime win, but in this game shooting 50% for the game allowed this Hawk team to get enough cushion to finish off Wimberley.
Take DJ Dorroh for instance, this young man was perfect from the floor as he made all of his five shots and two free throws to boot.
“We were just moving the ball around and getting good shots,” Dorroh said perfectly. “Then in the second half we were getting too confident and started slowing down.”
Shooting 57% from the field in that first half helped increase the Hawk lead up to 13 points going into intermission.
The freshman squad has a lot of weapons with several good ball handlers and some big boys underneath.
Tyler Williams and Heath McDonough filled the paint up with rebounds and pressure that Wimberley just could not match for this night.
“We were a lot faster than their big guy,” McDonough commented while looking down on this ReSporter. “That helped us with our fast break.”
In the third quarter, the Texans started their comeback giving the fans a glimpse of what might be a game decided on the last possession.
With 5:26 left in the fourth quarter, Wimberley had clawed back to within two points, 39-37. Dorroh then answered making two free throws and increasing the lead back to 4 points.
Fast break feed from Tyler Williams to Justin Narranjo helped increase that lead to 6 points with just under 4 minutes to go.
Wimberley answered with 3 points to get the score back to a one possession game with 2:41 left in this contest.
Canyon Lake would finish the game with a 10-4 advantage giving your Hawks a well deserved eight point win.
Rory Preiss and Gerrit Wilkins both helped in distributing the ball and picking their places to shoot in this game.
Good guard play was one of the deciding factors in this final outcome.
“We moved the ball around with enough passes,” Priess pressed. “We hope to take this confidence and ride it as we finish our season.”
