Hawks Get Closer in Loss to Hutto, 5-4

Tourney gave an indication of what might be in store for this team.

Hutto has a 4A classification and the Hawks rallied from a 4 run deficit to tie the score in the fifth inning before falling in the seventh and  a 5-4 loss.

Nick Cahill was perfect from the plate reaching base each time up and knocking in three runs in this contest.

Pitcher Tanner McGill also had a very impressive day allowing only one run in his four innings of work.

In the batter’s box, McGill also reached base both times he appeared.

Defensively, Canyon Lake had a stellar game with some great plays in both the outfield and infield.

In the 6th inning, JJ Nance just missed a catch while diving for the sinking line drive. The Hutto hitter tried to stretch that single to a double but was gunned down by Nance after gathering himself to throw a strike to second base.

“I said, uh-oh to myself (after missing the catch) and heard two and throw it to second base,” Nance commented. “Defensively, we are looking good and this is one of our best years in the field. We still have to get our bats going though.”

The Hawks have failed to show power in this young season and Coach Trent Dunavant is working the base paths as much as possible in getting players in position to score.

On how this tournament ended, Coach Dunavant commented, “You are starting to see what you need to see in how this team is playing the game, we have guys that are getting some separation.”

Canyon Lake will be in action this Tuesday when they travel to Llano before three home games in the Comal Tournament starting Thursday.

Good defense, good pitching, good fielding, and now only one more good needs to make itself manifest with good or timely hitting.

Time will tell.
