Hawks Hone Skills for District Track Meet
Canyon Lake has had several injuries this season and will be working on
getting athletes in shape as the Hawk Relays commences this Thursday and District 27-3A Meet in a couple of weeks.
There have been some personal bests this season and Shane Relkin had that moment last week in the long jump hitting a distance of 20’5.25 feet.
Breaking the 20 foot mark is a goal for athletes in having a chance to score some points for the team.
“It was last jump,” Junior Relkin said. “It felt like a solid jump and the coaches said to go up six inches on my step…I had a solid jump and I just flew and then had a good landing. It was exciting to getting one of the goals that I had set.”
The Hawks has had another surprise with Freshman Brandon Courtney coming into this meet with some serious times and moving up on the depth chart.
“Last year I was running a 56 second 400 meter run,” Courtney started.
That mark has been obliterated when Courtney whittled that time down about 3 seconds this year.
“Adrenaline,” Courtney said quickly when responding to what is one of his major reasons for running so much faster. “I’m in the 300 and 110 meter hurdles and now I have a chance to get a letterman’s jacket….but I would like to place in every meet this year.”
That certainly is within reach after watching this young man finish strong in Dripping Springs last Thursday.
On the girls side of the cinders, Mariah Ellis also had a personal best in the triple jump in the Texan’s Meet.
“This week I finally got my approach down,” Elliis said matter of factly. “Both Bailey (Drum) and I were tied before the last jump and I was just trying to be better than her jumps since I was jumping after she was.”
“I want to have a personal best in the 800 meter run,” Ellis commented on what she hopes happens as this season continues. “That last 200 meters I was just dead last time I ran.”
Speaking from experience, those longer runs has a way of taking everything out of a runner.
Canyon Lake had many of the girl athletes absent for the Texan’s Meet, but intend to have a full team this Thursday at Canyon Lake Meet.
