JV Hawks Sweep Texans, 12-6 and 9-2
Canyon Lake swept Wimberley on Monday night at the Hawk Diamond, 12-6 and 9-2.

It was the third win for the Hawks over Wimberley and improved their District 27-3A record to 5-1.
Both games had the Texans drawing first blood in the first inning with a run, but soon the Hawks would respond with vengeance, scoring at will.
Wimberley jumped out to a 5-3 lead in that first game when they bottled up all their hits and walks in that one inning to score 4 runs.
CL also chipped in with a couple of errors for some gift wrapped runs for the Visitors.
“We finally loosened up,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens opened. “We put pressure on their (Wimberley’s) defense and then we kicked it up with our offense.”
Canyon Lake responded with an 8 run second inning after the first two batters struck out.

So, with two outs the next 9 batters reached base.
Speaking of gift wrapping, Wimberley fumbled and bumbled errors, wild pitches, and passed balls in helping the Hawks with what turned out to be enough runs to take the first game.
William Volz did have a rough second inning when he helped Wimberley when he threw a ball into centerfield in an attempt to get a player at second base.
“We had a talk with how tight the zone was and I challenged him (Volz) to let the fielders help him out,” Coach Owens said. “I wanted to find the x-factor and give the pitcher some confidence and I am glad he responded.”
That error helped in giving the Texans their last lead of 5-3 going into the bottom of that same inning.
“I came in and did not start strong,” Volz said. “I needed to set my ducks in a row and then it got fun after that.”
Fun it was, as Volz then proceeded to get all of the ducks while finishing with 7 strikeouts and allowing just one more hit after that second inning.
The 4th inning, Volz, had 10 strikes in a row as he finished strong….just like the Hawks as they had fun at the carnival shooting all of those ducks.

The next game was more of the same as Canyon Lake rode a Gordon McCleary tide to the
Gordon McCleary and Jonathan McGuire complete sweep of Wimberley after a resounding, 9-2 win
shore with 9 runs while Wimberley could only muster one hit.
McCleary retired 12 out of the next 13 Texans after having one run scored in that first inning.
“Having the team having your back was huge,” McCleary said. “It is not hard to be ready when you have your whole team behind you and having adrenaline kick in did not make it hard to get fired up for Wimberley.”
The Texans could not master this big man (McCleary) and Canyon Lake completed the sweep.
Jonathan McGuire had two hits while McCleary and Haden Lee both had doubles knocking in two runs each for the Hawks.
“We opened up and allowed that one run and then we started swinging the bat and putting pressure on their defense,” McGuire said. “We kept coming and they finally had their breaking point.”
Five Hawks reached base on a base error which exasperated that long face on this Texan team.
Canyon Lake scored in every inning but one as this Hawk team continued to put pressure on their Visitors.
Second Baseman Dylan Hodges had ‘good eyes’ getting on base with three walks which also showed that a walk can be lethal, as Hodges scored each time he reached first base.
Some better fielding in this game was also evident as the infield was much more efficient in this game.
Good pitching, timely hitting, and decent fielding resulted in a 9-2 win as Canyon Lake will be in action again, against Boerne on Monday April 7th with the first pitch at 5pm.
