CL Hawks Finish 2nd in TexFest Tournament Gold Bracket
Canyon Lake finished in 2nd Place in the Tex Fest Tourney. The Hawks won their first two games before meeting a tough Kerrville Tivy team and bowing in defeat in that championship match.
First Place was not possible, but this Hawk club had several other Firsts on this weekend.
First time they were able to compete in the Gold Bracket.
First time they have had a 6 game winning streak in their history with 5 game winning streak being reached 3 times previously during the 2013, 2012 and 2009 season.
First time the Hawks had two players finish with All-Tournament accolades in Wimberley when Hayley
Melone and Regan Mickey both were recognized in this tournament of 24 teams.
Tivy was a hard nut to crack, hence they did not make it this far being lucky, finishing this tournament with a sparkling 7-0 record.
“We have stuff to work on,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said without hesitation. “Games like this will help prepare us mentally.”
The Hawks were not very competitive in that second game and seemed to lose focus as Tivy finished with a 21-6 score after breaking a 4-4 tie after a kill by Mariah Ellis.
“We will be working on our blocking and showing our defense on how to read where a block is going and thinking a play ahead,” Coach Paisley said. “We are hiding behind our blocks and that needs to be corrected.”
You can count on that being a part of the game that improvement might be evident next time CL takes the court this coming Tuesday in Lockhart.
Canyon Lake had a 10 game winning streak in this tournament as their first loss was against Tivy. The Hawks had an average score of 25-16 in those five wins.
The Hawks started Saturday with a good win over a District foe in Navarro. The Panthers had won the last six games over Canyon Lake as the Hawks stopped a three year losing streak to our friends from the flat lands.
This game had some nifty blocking from Lillie Sander which helped stem a rally in that second game.
“That was intense and we needed to get the ball back, so I just did my job,” Senior Sander said when responding on what she was feeling during that block. “I just need to line-up and jump as high as I can.”
That block was certainly high enough to help put a stop to this Panther team as Canyon Lake finished Navarro off.
“This is exciting and it get’s us motivated and drive,” Sander said in talking about winning a game in the Gold Bracket.
Canyon Lake then took a two hour break and had Cleburne next up.
The Hawks were never catching up in their second game as the kept a 5 to 7 point lead.
During this game, Senior Grace Allen ricochet a shot off of Sander’s face then finished with a kill on the volley.
“That was not suppose to happen,” Allen said bluntly after answering a question on if she has practiced that shot before. “I just got excited because I had a chance to redeem myself when the ball came back to me.”
Redeem she did as the play went as a kill for Allen and assist for Sander.
This was the sixth win in a row for Canyon Lake and you already know that is another high water mark that this team would like to increase before the end of this campaign.
The Hawks will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to battle Lockhart with the Freshman starting the action at 5pm. Canyon Lake next home game will be August 29th with Smithville being in attendance.
