MV Hawks 8th B Squad have Scary Win, 8-6 over Badgers
The Mountain Valley Hawks held off Lampasas 8th B squad last Thursday at CLHS.
It took Lampasas a little over four minutes to get on the board by driving 78 yards on 9 plays. What happened next would one reason a win for MV would be attained when this Badger team could not get their extra points by running which kept the score, 6-0.
Both defenses then started controlling the game when in that second quarter, MV would only have to cover 23 yards of real estate after holding the Badgers on a fourth down try.
Running Back Wyatt Meckel would break the goal line on a six yard run with five minutes left in the quarter.
Nic Robinson would then cap the score off with a two point conversion for the first and only lead needed, 8-6.
Lampasas next drive was all for naught when Justin Romfh would stop the Badger from scoring with no time left for the second quarter. That Lampasas drive started on their 43 yard line with 13 plays that bled the clock dry.
When the second half started both teams would have a minimal chance to make good with scoring.
Mountain Valley had first debs with the ball and drove 57 yards but was stopped short on the Badger 8 yard line. This drive only left 40 seconds on the third quarter clock.
When Lampasas secured the ball they were 92 yards from a chance to take the lead back from this scrappy defense for the Hawks.
A drive of 16 plays of mostly runs would put these Badgers down to Mountain Valley’s one yard line.
There were two fourth down plays on the drive with the Badgers on MV’s 40 yard line and needing just one yard. A 34 yard run was huge and help Lampasas to set up shop on Mtn. Valley’s 6 yard line with still over one minute on the clock.
A Badger quarterback sneak resulted in a four yard gain as every running back would help push the QB closer to the goal line.
On third down and only needing two yards, the Hawks would hold the Badgers to just one yard and having just one more chance to score.
Being on the one yard line with a slot-t offense would usually be a bad situation for a defense. With Dylan Forehand, Gavin Thomas and the rest of the defensive line the Badger run would be just short of that goal line rendering a scary win for Mountain Valley.
“I was scared and I did not know what would happen,” Forehand stated. “We had a linebacker blitz and we came around and the stop means we are one of the best teams out there.”
Forehand finished this game with 17 tackles as he was flying everywhere to get tackles.
“I had 110% adrenaline on that play,” the wide eyed Forehand closed.
Thomas was also a pivotable person on that drive and last play. “I was scared,” Thomas started. “We just need to get in line and push back and we cut in a little.”
“Coach tells us to play our game like we practice and play our practices like it is a game,” Thomas said astutely.
It only took the Hawks four plays to milk the clock for the win on a goal line stand.
It was a scary moment, but once you execute then you really have nothing to be scared about and a two point win feels scary good.
