Canyon Lake Boys Soccer got what was needed with their win over Bandera Bulldogs, 1-0 on Friday night.

“It was a total team effort last night,” Head Soccer Coach Warren Graham said. “I’m proud of the effort put forth by every boy.”

Soccer 1-0 games takes extra effort since the game hinges on both sides of the ball equally in order to keep that precious one goal lead.

“They fought hard the entire 80 minutes, knowing we had to win to keep our playoff hopes alive,” Coach Graham continued. “Buddy Glass and the defense worked hard, especially in the last five minutes, to preserve the shutout.”

The Hawks backs were up against the wall as a loss would put CL with no chance for a playoff spot this year.

Canyon Lake completed their fourth shut-out for this year and first in district play.

Canyon Lake got their goal on Jordan Sczech’s corner kick to a waiting Grayson Rohrbacher, who got his head onto the ball out of reach for the Bulldog goalie.

After a tough loss to Boerne on Tuesday by that same score, Canyon Lake used that game as a booster shot as they complete district play with only two more games on the schedule.

“The Boerne game gave us a much needed boost of confidence,” Graham deduced. “We really felt after the game that we could have tied that game. Getting that close of a result against a team the quality of Boerne reminded the boys of how they played earlier this year.”

CL won their first district contest in four years and now will go into their next two games with some momentum.

Canyon Lake can now look at tie breaker rules with Bandera as each of these teams fight for that last playoff spot.

“They know we still have a lot of work to do if we want to make the playoffs, but getting that first district win in four years certainly helps.”

Those tie breaker rules will be dusted off, but now Canyon Lake needs to finish strong as they await another visit from Fredericksburg and then the final game with Wimberley this coming Friday.

Go Hawks and congrats on a must win game!!
