WEEK'S RECAP

Go Hawks!!
The Lake Boy’s Basketball team had even-steven results after a 2-2 record in the Fredericksburg Tourney and CL will now be enveloped in moving their focus to their district season starting this Tuesday playing in Davenport.
Canyon Lake has already matched their total with one district win matching last year’s club and will have their sights on adding to that total this campaign.
When comparing common opponents played this season, The Lake, is holding their own based on those results. One caveat was seeing this season with 3 starters from last season missing a majority of those pre-district battles.
A small sample size of games has CL showing enough improvement for a realization of placing above last place in district with an outside chance of reaching a post-season berth.
District 28-4A has 5 of those 7 teams with a winning record and a glimpse of that if these Hawks would have had those injured players during the beginning of this season….they too…not having totake a lot of, horse shoe throwing, to think thii The Lake team having a winning record too.

Let’s GO HAWKS!!
CLHS sandwiched their two tourney wins with two losses against 5A schools.
One loss against Georgetown was a forgettable affair after a 50 point set-back and then seeing CL give Liberty Hill a scare which had the good guys achieving a 10 point lead early in that contest.
In that first win playing Salado, Canyon Lake, started with a dismal first quarter that had the Eagles working a 13 point advantage, 20-7 with 30 seconds remaining in that first stanza before CLHS cutting it to an 11 point deficit.
The Lake would put together an 8 point barrage to start the 2nd quarter which helped close that gap leading to a one point halftime, 28-27.
With 3:13 remaining in the third quarter, Canyon Lake would have their first lead, 36-34 when Jacob Holland found Mario Aguilar for a bucket and lead that lasted for the remainder in this 8 point victory.

Go Hawks!!
CLHS started the game shooting 31% but after finding their groove ended this contest with a respectable 46% from the floor.
Carter Williams led CL scoring 18 points without a miss from the field as those points came around the basket while leading the Hawks with 3 steals and 10 rebounds.
Mario Aguilar also scored in double digits (12 points) while pulling down 7 rebounds.
Salado cooled off and that had The Lake with an in your face defense during those last three quarters leaving these Eagles scoring 27 points.
This Eagle team beat Davenport in overtime and lost by 5 points to Bandera which gives C-Lake a notion that they can compete in district play.
Canyon Lake’s defense ranks 2nd on the All-Time Points allowed average, 47.1 points per game. The 2012 team is first in this category when they allowed, 46.6 points that year.

Go Hawks!!
The Hawks win over Greenwood showed that this team can lose a 9 point lead in that 4th quarter and still have enough still in their tank for a 3 point win.
Games like this, in the past, would certainly be put on the loss ledger. Canyon Lake’s history is suiting up their deepest bench since the beginning of Hawk basketball back in 2008.
Jacob Holland sank 4 three-pointers in this win and has amassed 49 for the season and now ranks 6th on the All-Time makes list.
Jaxson Jeter (one of those late arrivals) finished high point with 17 points and has given Coach Cole a slasher who can shoot or dish the ball for an assist and Jeter also sank 3 of his 4 from beyond the arc which will come in handy.
Mario Aguilar finished with a double-double with 11 rebounds and points in this win. You can also add 5 assists to his game totals and now stands 9th with 66 for this year with a chance to reach triple digits and join Doug Hubnik (151 2013 season) and Tyler Pauly (118 2021 season) which is pretty good company.
Carter Williams missed CL’s first 11 tip-offs and has now been active in his past 12 games with good results taking the lead in rebounds. On this Greenwood win Williams finished with 11 bounds and 7 assists. But this young man wasn’t finished with in this win after contributing 4 blocks and 3 steals.
A pretty good work day and seeing how Dalton Stromquist and Jeter continue to find their hard-wood legs as they continue to acclimate would help as this season matures.
Canyon Lake’s next home game will come on January 5th against Bandera with tip-off at 6:30pm.
Come and support these young men and Go Hawks!!

Let’s Go Hawks!!
Canyon Lake was finally able to have enough ammo for their battle against Fredericksburg last week with a well deserved win over the Billies, 46-40.
The last time The Lake was able to beat FHS was January 10, 2010 when they outscored the Billies, 57-54.
Thirteen years later, The Hawks were able to get that next victory. CLHS is the only school in District 27-4A that presently is below .500 record wise and the next round of district foes fighting it out comes on January 2nd after their last tournament in Fredericksburg December 28th-30th.
The Hawks have been short handed since the season started with two players Jaxson Jeter & Carter Williams nursing injuries and then there was more company after Dalton Stromquist went down in the second outing which left CL with 3 starters who had finished last year as starters.
Williams returned 8 games ago and Jeter/Stromquist made their comeback during the Freddie win.
The ReSporter was able to sit down with Head Coach Monte Cole to talk where Canyon Lake stands after reaching the half-way point of this 2024 campaign.

Way to Go Hawk’s!!
“We didn’t really know what we were going to get,” Coach Cole said when asked what he thought how the last two puzzle pieces (Stromquist & Jeter) would do on their return. “I was surprised when Jaxson came in for his first minute and a half by being that aggressive. He studies the game while he is on the bench but both Jaxson and Dalton were both aggressive and they were difference makers for us.”
Coach Cole continued, “Harris (Gilliam) had three huge plays during the 4th (quarter) with a hustle basket and then took a charge and then added a steal.”
During this part of the contest, Canyon Lake, needed other players to step up after Mario Aguilar and Stromquist both had to leave after some minor injuries that knocked them out for the remainder of this tilt.
Canyon Lake had been able to get their whole team with lots of reps resulting by being short handed for those first 18 games and the whole team had showed they could help when called upon.
“I ask the team to hunt for great shots and I want them to have quick ball reversals and be aggressive,” Coach quipped. “Each player has a role and they will have different reasons to be in a game whether it is to defend or do both (scoring). We want to have paint touches and when they have good shots we want them to look for great shots!”

Hit Man says way to Hit’em Hawks!!
Canyon Lake has had slow 3rd quarters as this season has matured, “We (the coaches) are trying to figure out why we are having a lack of focus coming out of halftime,” Coach said. “I want us to win the quarter and that can happen with our defense…I tell the players that, ‘If they (our opponent) can’t score then they are not going to beat us.’”
The Hawks recorded 13 turnovers in their Billie win and Coach Cole was asked what he could live within a game, “I would like to be below 10 but I know for high school that might not be an attainable number for most games…so…I would be pleased being below 15 (turnovers) for a game.”
Earlier during this season Canyon Lake seemed to have hit a wall and Coach Cole surmise, “I think I might have scheduled too many games in that short span of time without having enough practices.”
Well, that certainly will not be the case when next week’s tournament in Fredericksburg comes into to focus. With a Christmas break the Hawks can get some stamina back before going into a tourney with district starting in earnest to start the New Year.
On what Coach Cole is looking for in this tournament knowing that there are several good schools in the mix, “I want them to show up and compete against those people…play hard after their 3 to 5 days off and not sleep walk thru this tourney.”
This tournament will allow your Hawks a chance to get all those new faces in game action which will re-introduce them playing as a team before district starts.
Merry CHRISTmas & Go Hawks!!

Mya Vorhis made the little things count in Tourney over the weekend.
The Hawks won their final two contests and finished with a 3-1 record and claimed a Silver Bracket Championship during their Cornerstone Christian School Tournament with a run-a-away victory over Dripping Springs, 74-40 and a squeaker win over Boerne Geneva, 54-52.
Sofia George scored a combined 66 points (102 pts for tourney) in those final two games and presently has a 25 point scoring average for this season.
During her 34 point outing against Geneva she shot 64% from the field and was a lofty 80% behind the arc percentage while also dishing 4 assists and 4 steals.
But it was Marley Christian who had the final steal… when she intercepted a pass in the last 2 seconds keeping Geneva from a possible win or tie with their last shot.
“That’s not the first time we have been in “down to wire game situation,” Head Coach Lauren Perez said. “Our girls are learning that basketball is a game of ups and downs and momentum swings, but we have to stay patient and composed especially when we have the lead and a team is making a run. Geneva made some great plays and had offensive threats, but our girls were able to refocus and get the job done.”

Go Hawks & Come to a Unique Gift Store & Check out the Christmas items!!
Lottie Chappell had a 10 rebound effort and continues to show how valuable she can as she also ended this outing with 4 steals and a block. No points, but doing those other parts of this contest she provided CL as role player that are playing their task very well in those facets.
“This goes to show that our game against Boerne Geneva we had some key players in foul trouble. Coach Perez relayed what she said to the players as CL held on for this win. “So even when Geneva tried to make a run, we had to lean on each other as a team.”
Mya Vorhis was nails in this tourney being a jack of all trades as she was able to score, rebound, have an assist or steal in different battles that helped in completing a great week.
Reece Coburn has been claiming more time on the court and this Geneva game showed a more complete result as she joined George in double digit scoring (11 pts) shooting 44% and recording 2 assists.
Canyon Lake was able to get a lot of repetition the past two weeks and coming out with a 6-3 record will help strengthen that main goal during this time of the campaign and that is being ready for district.
The Lady Hawks will be back at the Hawk Nest this Tuesday when they face Fox Tech with tip-off commencing at 11:30am.
Congrats and Go Hawks!!
