Canyon Lake ran out of gas in comeback losing to Navarro last Friday, 62-55.
The Hawks had their tank go dry in the 2nd quarter scoring 7 points and leaving CL needing more petro in order for completing a comeback win.
That 7 point deficit at half had the Panthers keeping the pressure on as they increased their lead to 11 points with 4 minutes remaining in the game.

Sharpshooter Sam Schimank scored 16 points in Win over Navarro
Canyon Lake’s JV continues to play at a high plateau after another convincing battle this time against the Navarro Panthers winning, 51-38 on the road last Friday night.
The scoring was dominated by Sam Schimank from the outside and Michael Harwell from the inside. Both players had their moments that helped carry the Hawks to this win after starting the tip-off with a tie ending the first quarter 13 all.
From there to the final horn, CL was in total control with a mind boggling 18 steals. In the first half Canyon Lake had 13 of those thefts which kept the Panthers with their paws trying to pass or shoot the ball.
That defense was impressive but the offense did their job as well with 13 assists and getting the ball to an open man paid dividends as all the guards combined for every assist.
Harwell was the main Hawk with the steals totaling 6 and leading the team cleaning the glass with 9 for this 13 point victory.

The Hawk JV team crushed the Poteet Aggies last Tuesday after storming to a 17-4 first quarter and then coasting to the game’s end winning, 63-29.
Three CL players had double figure scoring with Hank Jordan accumulated 19, Michael Harwell scored 15 and Anthony Zavala was strong off the bench finishing with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
“I’m happy with the win,” Harwell started on how this team will take this game into the next two contests. “I am looking forward to seeing us play really well as a team.”
Harwell reminds you of the ‘Ever Ready Battery’ commercial as there is non-stop action when this young man goes after the rock.

Canyon Lake looked good in beating the Aggies this past Tuesday night at the Hawk Nest with a satisfying, 76-39 victory.
“I was worried about this game going in,” Head Coach Luke Chapman recalled. “We did a good job and played with emotion and energy and sustained it throughout the whole game.”
The Hawks had 3 players reach double figures with 14 coming from a starter in Rory Preiss and the other two players shared 11 points a piece coming off the bench.
Charlie McIntosh and Bennie Brownlee were those players that continued their pressure on the Aggies after scoring 22 combined points coming off the bench.

Mia Riali has little things adding up to BIG things
Canyon Lake Lady Hawks got that bad taste out of their mouths after last week’s Burnet Tournament in beating Lampasas Badgers, 49-38.
“We needed the win,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “The Christmas break came at the worst time as we were getting to a good point, and now we are restarting again and it will be good to get back to a routine.”
Reagan Heun and Alexa Ramos finished with 17 and 12 points respectfully as Heun got her double-double with 11 rebounds.
This contest was separated by 3 points or less through the first quarter and 5 minutes in the second stanza before a Heun 3 pointer helped increase that lead to 6 points, 18-12.
With a 21-15 halftime lead, the Hawks, would unleash their best 3 point output of the year in the 3rd quarter as CL made 4 for 6 from beyond the arc in that 19 point barrage to increase their lead to 15 points.

Adia Garcia teams with JV win over Lampasas
Canyon Lake JV-1 squad took care of business in their win over Lampasas before starting district play next week beating the Badgers, 51-30.
Starting the game on a 11-2 run was just what was needed as the Hawks worked back in getting their groove after a long break as Lainee Moses and Caroline Kullberg both finished with 10 points leading CL on this mid-day contest.
Another surprise was seeing Emily Boylan having 12 rebounds with 8 of those rascals being possessed in the last quarter of play.
“I think we just woke up as a team,” Boylan said in response to how well the team seems to be playing as this season progresses. “We are communicating much better and we can read each other’s eyes.”
That was evident with the assists, as that stat, can only work when the passer and receiver are on the same page.

Hancock Mini-Mart Says Go Hawks
The busy season begins this first week of the new year as Canyon Lake Basketball readies for District 28-4A starting soon and Soccer’s scrimmage season was off and running last Friday. Add some water for Swimming and you have the start of more action as each week continues to spring up.
With the Girl’s Basketball games last week, the Hawks had the same result as the Boy’s team with an 0-fer during their first tournament after the Christmas Break, in Burnet.
There were some heavyweights in attendance with Fredericksburg giving CL a heavy dose of what they can expect when district games start. The 12th Ranked, Billies won their game convincingly over the Hawks and now a game with Lampasas on Monday will be the final tune-up game before the real contests start on January 10th.
The Lady Hawks will have Friday off and wait for another Top 25 State opponent in Boerne starts off district play.
One morsel of hope you can conclude from those tournament games last week was having 4 games with 4 or 5 freshman playing in those battles. The Holiday season had many players missing in action and those returning players can only help.

Happy New Year & Go Hawks
CL’s Boys got back on track with a good game in beating Karnes City for the Badgers first loss of the season.
This game had some good signs, as the Hawks battled back throughout the contest in winning by 7 points as things fell into place in the 4th quarter. After suffering a bad 4 games in Fredericksburg’s Tournament, this win was needed.
Canyon Lake will face Poteet and Navarro this week with a home game this Tuesday and a short drive to Navarro for the Friday tilt. The Poteet squad has a loss to Hondo and Navarro before the Christmas Break which will help give the Hawks an idea of how they might rank with future games after facing the Poteet Aggies.
Swimming will have their one scheduled meet this month in Burnet as the Hawks will look to improve on their win in that same water last December during the 4A & Under State Championship.
Other Sports are coming with Softball as the next sport coming out of their egg shell as this time of year there is no rest for the weary.
Look for those Basketball home games to be, ‘On the Air’, when Canyon Lake’s Broadcasting will bring those games to you by Live Stream.
If you do not have the link, then The ReSporter will post that information before each contest. You can come to this weekly article to check out when those games will be ready to tip-off.
Happy New Year and Go Hawks!!

Benjamin Rowe helping Hawks get win over St. Paul (photo by Karen Holmes)
Canyon Lake Freshman won their game over St. Paul Austin last Friday after outscoring the Guardians 10-1 in overtime for a final score, 46-37.

Benjamin Rowe is all smiles after sinking important Free Throws
The Hawks went into their half-time locker room talk after a lethargic level of play during the first two quarters.
“Coach told us to take care of the ball and be more aggressive,” Nic Rivera said. “Our pick and row started working and every time we ran it I had a chance to either get the ball to ‘Rico’ (Zachery Griffin) or take it.”
“We were needing a wake-up call,” Rylee Spaulding recalled. “We were lazy on defense and we were just out of it….but the second half we got aggressive.”
The Hawks finally shook the cobwebs off their basketballs after scoring 10 points for the shorter period in giving CL a 9 point advantage when the final horn sounded in this win.
