CL Hawks Basketball have Good Scrimmage

Senior Brandon Ward will be looking for a break out year for the Hawks

Senior Brandon Ward will be looking for a break out year for the Hawks

Canyon Lake has not had a lot of success throughout the years for basketball yet there is a decent chance that this year’s team might have what it takes to finish strong.

The Hawks will have more depth this year as many of the younger players last season played significant roles and with another year of playing could put this team in the spotlight.

Brandon Ward, Justin Ferris, Rory Preiss, Will Gray, Tyler Williams are some of those players that ended last season as solid players.

Looking at Preiss’ last game of stats in his game with Yoakum, and you see what could be in store this season.

Actually Preiss had a great half that many players would like to average for a half. Preiss ended the first half of that Yoakum game with 15 points and 10 rebounds which translates to a double-double.

Freshman Football Look to Repeat District Champs Next Year

Unknown-8

The Canyon Lake freshman lost, 14-12, against Boerne Greyhounds but still won the District 14 4-AAAA Freshman Championship.

The Hawks, with the help of 5 self imposed fumbles in which the Hawks only recovered two lost the battle but won the war. The Hawks lost two fumbles inside the Greyhounds 20 yard line which took points off the board as did the failed -2- two point conversion attempts.

However with all the ailments of this effort, CL still managed to hold the game close for a score of 14-12.

The Hawk Defense was a wrecking ball as they have been all season as they had a dominating game on this night too.

The first half was defensive battle for both teams as Boerne throws the ball everywhere and Canyon Lake as we know runs every chance they get.

The Greyhounds had 22 receptions and 124 yards passing with two interceptions and one touchdown.

Warriors Run out of Time in Loss to Summit, 85-72

Bracken Christian ran out of time in loss to Cedar Park Summit last Friday night, 85-72.

The Warriors could not find an answer to the lethal passing and running of the Eagles as BCS’s only stop for the defense was a fumble that was recovered in the 4th quarter and a victory snap to run out the clock.

“Their (Summit’s) number 11 could run, see the field, and throw the ball,” Head Coach Hosea Stredic said. “We ran the ball very well and we stayed in the tight formation the whole game and scored 72 points….but, all is good because the playoffs is a new season.”

Bracken has shown great improvement as this season has transpired in scoring 72 points in the loss that very well could had been a mercy game if played in the first part of this year’s campaign.

“We fought and did not give up,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We were just walking around after their last score, but then we wanted to leave the football field as a team and went down swinging.”

Canyon Lake started this game a little different as a 37 yard pass play to Austin Brennan opened up an avenue not traveled for CL’s first score.

On when he knew the Hawks would be passing on first down, QB Ben Fulton recalled, “Yesterday during our film session…I think it helps with the pass threat and you can tell that the defense was looking for the run.”

Boerne did answer that score when they had an 8 play drive for 82 yards for their response. This drive was helped by a Hawk offsides on a 4th down play that led to a 21 yard run on the next play by QB Brooks Klutts .

“Our kids fought hard to pull out a win that sealed the district championship,” Head Coach Brandon Pawelek. “We had to overcome some costly penalties but we were able to score and come up with stops when we needed to.”

Mountain Valley found themselves down in the third quarter after a Boerne opening score to start the second half.

Then a methodical 11 play drive covering 64 yards would allow MV to take the lead and eventually the game in grand fashion.

Mountain Valley’s 8th Grade B football team came from a one win team last year to winning a District Champion after shutting out Boerne, 16-0.

“Our B-team played great on both sides of the ball,” Head Coach Raymond Amaro said. “It is difficult to beat a good team twice, but our boys worked hard all week in practice and were ready.”

It was all about the defense on Thursday as MVMS 8B team started this day giving up 4 yards on the Greyhounds first drive then would block their punt.

That would allow the Hawks with a 30 yard drive as this drive was highlighted after a Colton Eilers 21 yard run giving MV a first down on Boerne’s 5 yard line.

CLJV Lose Game but Still Win District

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity lost their last game of the season but still claimed the District 14-4A Championship.

“I am proud of these young man,” Head JV Coach John Barthels stated. “This year overall was memorable and this was a great group of boys and I look forward to seeing them in the future.”

Boerne came back in the fourth quarter to steal the game from the Hawks as CLJV could not convert a fourth down play deep in Boerne territory, giving the Greyhounds one more chance to score.

The Dogs took advantage and drove 85 yards with the last play covering 53 yards on a catch and run and a lead that would stand, 27-26.

CLJV finished with 356 yards for this night and more than doubled the time of possession over Boerne but it would become a heart breaking loss to a very good passing club.

CL Hawks Volleyball Bracket Ornaments

Canyon Lake's Student Body is all in for this year's Volleyball Team

Canyon Lake’s Student Body is all in for this year’s Volleyball Team

Assessing the field after the first round of games as Canyon Lake prepares for Sealy this Friday at Cedar Creek High School with a 6:00pm start.

Things we know? A repeat from last year’s Area game as Sealy met Canyon Lake and swept the Hawks, 3-0.

But that will not mean the same result this season. In that game last season, Sealy was the top seed after winning their district while CL tied with Navarro and was awarded the second seed to start their bracket play.

So, yes, these are the same schools but they have switched seeding positions.

Sealy lost their one game tilt with Columbus after both schools finished their district tied with one loss.
