CL Hawks Boys and Girls Basketball Week’s Recap
The Canyon Lake Ladies have had another successful week in hoopsville.
Since our last recap, CL Girls have won a tournament and both single games last week over Devine and Pleasanton.
This team is now on a seven game winning streak which is a high water mark for this school.
In our last wrap up ‘Percentages’ was talked about and here is what the Hawks had two weeks ago compared to today:
Team Total Shots 3Point Free Throws
Percentages Two Weeks Ago 36.7% 32.9% 39.2%
Percentages Now 33.4% 31.4% 42.8%
All those percentages have gone down except for Canyon Lake’s free throws.
Shooting is important, but this team relies on three other items that have resulted in their bottom line: Winning.
Defense has been top notch throughout in all their games thus far. That one result can cover a multitude of shortcomings in a game. This Hawk team is a testament to that truism.
Another positive is how much the Hawks are cutting down on those pesky turnovers. Every time a turnover is avoided will give Canyon Lake another chance to score.
One more positive this team possesses is their knack for offensive rebounding. That one stat will allow that shooting percentage to actually be higher than it shows.
Canyon Lake averages right at 14 offensive rebounds per game which might be their most important number in that stat box.
Confidence is sprouting with each win and the emergence of Sophomore Kyndall Drum will pay dividends when district starts.

Canyon Lake had a statement game in a win over Navarro, 60-47 in the Randolph Tournament.
The Hawks have not won a district game in the past two years and even though this win does not count in District 27-3A play, it sure will play in the minds of a team that has been in the desert for way too long.
“We did a good job after breaking the press,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “We started getting good shots especially in the fourth when we only had two turnovers.”
CL started out lukewarm and then regressed to ice cold in this contest as the Hawks went into halftime trailing, 23-17 after a five point second quarter.
Canyon Lake went over six minutes counting the end of the first quarter before a free throw finally stopped a Navarro 13 point run. Caleb Kreiger had the only basket in this quarter with the Hawks going cold shooting 9%….ouch!!
During the second half, better than 50% from the floor had a different result on the scoreboard as CL reversed the game in their favor.
The Hawks made their statement starting the fourth quarter when they had a 12 point run and a lead for the remainder of this contest.
Andrew Riali had that feel again with an eight point barrage in a 1:12 seconds span in this quarter.
“I was feeling it,” Riali said warmly. “We started cold in the first half and the second half we got it going. You can’t make it if you don’t shoot it.”

Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball won their first two games in the Randolph Tournament on Friday and will finish Saturday with games against Navarro (11am) and Randolph (2pm).
This Hawk team is now 8-6 this season after starting 0-4 a few weeks ago. That would equate to winning eight of their last 10 games.
CL’s game with Nixon-Smiley had 11 different players register a point as the Hawks coasted to a 31 point win.
In their second game, Canyon Lake won, 63-52 over SA Lutheran who had beaten Randolph earlier in this tournament.
Caleb Kreiger (21), Doug Hubnik (14) , and Andrew Rial (10) all finished in double figures scoring.
The ReSporter will have full write-ups after this tournament concludes today.

Bracken Christian could not find an answer for New Braunfels Christian inside or outside game as the Wildcats finished with 90 points winning, 90-33.
The basket looked like the ocean for NBC and this team had all the networks ready for a replay.
Chase Higgins was the lone Warrior to finish with double figure scoring hanging 21 points for BCS on the scoreboard.
Other notable players had Coy Zunker with his on ‘catlike’ quickness and five steals whie Jon Wright corralled nine rebounds for Bracken.

Bracken Christian Lady Warriors beat New Braunfels Christian, 14-7 in the second quarter, but lost the game last Friday night at the Warriors gym.
The Warriors (4-5) were basically out played by one Wildcat that went wild scoring over 50 points in this contest.
BCS did close the gap in the second quarter to seven points, 17-23 as this scrappy group of Lady Warriors outscored New Braunfels with 12 unanswered points helping to close the gap.
The Wildcats then got wild for the remainder of this game outscoring BCS, 39-14 in the second half.
Lorena Martinez finished in double figures with 11 points and Micaela Michael controlled the boards finishing with 11 and one block.
A repeat of that second quarter for the game and BCS will put a scare or win against any team.
