Canyon came without the Lake this week in their loss to the Mountain Valley Hawks, 10-4.

The Hawks started shaky as Canyon scored 3 runs in the first giving MV a wake-up call after winning their first game to start the season over this same team.

Grace Hinze was in the circle and Canyon started with the first four out of five batters reaching base. Giving up only 3 runs was a good omen as the start could easily been worse.

“My Coach always tells me to relax,” Hinze started. “Honestly in the first inning I was jittery and nervous because this was a big team and we were going for district.”

Hinze was all business like for the rest of this game as the Cougars only scored one more run in the last inning when this game was well in control.

The ReSporter: How has your off-season conditioning and workout been going?

Coach Paisley: “Offseason is great! The girls have been touching a ball, lifting weights, conditioning and improving skills at an individual and team level. We are about to begin the San Marcos Summer League for the month of June.” (Tuesday nights)

The ReSporer: What is the main item you look for as you put this ‘new’ edition on the court for this upcoming season?

Coach Paisley: “The main item for this upcoming season is raising the level of intensity. I am looking for players who are driven, passionate, communicates, and flat out gets after it!” (more…)

Brandon Courtney taking a break during workouts

Then there was 1 athlete still working hard on his skill set as Brandon Courtney qualified for the State 4A Track Meet in Austin this weekend.

Courtney had a PR (Personal Best) finishing second in the Region Track Meet last weekend as this Sophomore continues to whittle down his CL best time for the 300 Meter Hurdles.

Courtney’s time of 39.56 is now right at 3 seconds better than Karl Tucker’s 42.23 that he ran Region Meet back in 2010.

All-Hawk Track Team

This will be fun as each athlete can only be entered in 5 events just like Coach Troy Moses and Coach John Barthels would need to do in entering his players before a meet.

There are also just three entrants for each event. On the girls side, The ReSporter, needed to take certain girls off an event since some of their runs would put them over that 5 event limit.

Mariah Ellis comes to mind as she is in the top three, counting Relays, six times and so there are some events The Resporter went to the next best time. Caitlyn Collins was another athlete that was in the top three multiple times.

Daniel Camarillo making the fly balls look easy

Baseball All-Hawk Team continues with some very tough decisions. With six players already on the scorer’s sheet, The ReSporter, will try to fill that sheet with three more entries.

Yes, this could easily go in several different directions and certainly open for discussion as their would be no argument with another deserving student making a case for a spot.

The ReSporter has two good pitchers and having Cody Powell would only help pitching Coach Bret Hodges when he wanted to make a change on the mound.

Powell’s only drawback was his walk ratio but needing a southpaw would help in those certain situations needed in what is probably the most complicated sport because of all the different variable that play into a game result.

Pitcher Cody Daily keeps game close for a 6 run 2-out rally

Mountain Valley Baseball team made things interesting as their rally just fell short in extra innings losing to Smithson Valley Middle School, 10-8.

This comeback would not have been possible if reliever Cody Daily had not made an appearance in the fourth inning to stop the bleeding.

“Throw strikes and just try to bring my team up and win,” Daily said while answering what his thinking was as he took the mound for those middle innings. “We just are going to get a winning attitude.”

SVMS had forged into a, 7-2 lead as the Rangers had scored in all but one inning as they could start coasting going into those middle innings.

The Hawks decided they had better start a comeback and that was what happened as MVMS had two outs when the improbable started.

Bailey Bryan and Kyra Gonzales pose after game with SVMS

The Mountain Valley Hawks lost their first game this year when Smithson Valley MS took a 3 run first inning lead and never looked back, Thursday night at the Hawk Field, 12-5.

MV did rally to get within one run when Bailey Bryan and Grace Hinze both reached base in the third inning and came around to score to pull within striking range, 3-2.

“We were not as focused,” Bryan said. “We just need to keep everything in front of us and keep in the game. If we play smarter and know what we have to do on the bases then we can be more aggressive.”

Bryan is one of the few Hawks that is playing as an 8th Grader and will soon be playing on the field as a high school player this time next year.

“I am excited for high school and I played with some of those players last year,” Bryan closed.

So far The ReSporter has Michael Brady, Travis Walker, and Ross Waglardo as three of the best baseball athletes during their stay at Canyon Lake.

Picking this team is a much tougher task than softball as there has been many more players to play while most of softball students were 3 or 4 year players.

This is to say, there will be several people that can make a case for a different set of players for this team and The ReSporter would not be hurt by that assessment.

With the 3 players that have been picked, The ReSporter feels that those 3 students would need to be on everyone’s ballot.

Drew Riccio will be our next pick as this young man could bring more than just his athletic skills, he would be that player needed in the dug out for preparing the team for any battle no matter what inning in the game.

Travis Walker was a four year starter for the Hawks

The ReSporter had requests of having an All-Star Baseball team to mirror recent articles made for Hawk Softball team.

Hope you enjoy this two part rendition.

Giving you thoughts on who should be on this team will be tough with so many players that deserve mention.

The ReSporter will start with giving four players for this two part series.

Michael Brady will be our catcher for this team as this young man was very good in throwing out base runners while leading all players with the best batting average at .364, while having more walks than strikeouts (48 bb/44 so) during his career.
