2013 Hawk Football Recap

Hawks taking in their Win over Pleasanton in first round of playoffs

Hawks taking in their Win over Pleasanton in first round of playoffs

The ReSporter would like to take a look at this past football campaign as well as gazing into the future and into next season.

Canyon Lake matched the 2010 team when that club also climbed into the second round of playoff games.

Both years had a Hawk team needing to find themselves as each season they were coming into a district race with a losing record.

Both teams also lost their first district game, it was even worse for this year’s squad, as the Hawks went into District 27-3A games winless.

Canyon Lake had installed a new offense this year and there were some growing pains as the year advanced and with each loss there would be more questions.

Lady Hawks improve to 5-0 after Win over Luling

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

Canyon Lake scored 15 points in their first quarter with only needing one more point to

Head Girl's Basketball Coach MaryBeth Gallagher

score more than Luling would have in their whole game.

In fact, the Lady Hawks did score more than Luling in each quarter after that first stanza and coasted to a 53 point win.

“We were able to work on a lot,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “Everyone got good playing time.”

Luling was the type of opponent you can judge how the team has progressed, but it does allow the coaches another game of assessing how much improvement has transpired.

Hawks Making Christmas Ornaments in Lose to Llano, 81-38

 Llano 25 20 20 16 81

Scorers: Tyler Clark 9, Hayden Lee 6, Trendon Martinez 5,
Garrett Winters 3, Isaac Mendez 3, Nic Adams 3, Sean Nolan 3,
Austin Acosta 2, Andrew Riali 2, Javier Mendez 2.

Hawks met a YellowJacket that could turn different colors as Canyon Lake was also seeing stars as Llano

hammered the Hawks, 81-38.

Yes, you read that score right. Canyon Lake did not respond to Llano’s press and turnovers was the result to this dismantling.

“We shot the ball poorly and Llano pressed the whole game and we were just not ready for it,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman opened.

Canyon Lake had only one practice with the players that just finished their football season and so a little rust and getting into basketball shape could of been some of the reasons for this blowout.

“That plays into it,” Coach Chapman said. “We hope to have those guys basketball ready by our next game and a lot of what we are doing this year is new those players too.”

The Hawks were as cold as the weather outside and this snowball gathered speed as each quarter transpired.

“Even when we did break the press we were not able to take advantage,” Coach Chapman closed.

Skyler Tschoepe and Robert Woods did not play in this opening game for those football athletes that double with basketball also. They will be ready for varsity next week.

This team will have better days, and the good news is games before district are for working out kinks.

The Hawk Football team proved that a 3-7 team can at least two rounds in the playoffs so wins and losses before district are just Christmas Ornaments.

Hawks Lose Game at Buzzer to Lampasas, 59-57

Sunday, November 24th, 2013

The Hawks had their 7 point lead slip away in the last two minutes as Lampasas closed the game out with a last

second shot to win, 59-57.

Canyon Lake was still playing short handed as this Saturday game was postponed one day as the Hawk’s football team was playing in a second round game a day earlier.

There are several players that will be bringing reinforcements to the hard wood by next week.

The game against Lampasas was a stark improvement from CL’s first 40 point loss to Cedar Creek.

Improvements in several areas was evident. Shooting percentage and taking care of the ball were both part of those building blocks.

Hawks Meet Buzz Saw in Loss to La Grange, 50-8

Austin Acosta and TJ Jones tackle a Leopard in Area play

Canyon Lake ran into a buzz saw as La Grange made mince meat of the Hawks, 50-8 in Area play.

The Hawks could not move the ball offensively and conversely could not stop this Leopard team defensively.

“Credit this La Grange team, they forced our mistakes and were very opportunistic,” Head Coach Charles Drum said. “Our game plan was to control the clock and to limit their plays and we did not accomplish either one.”

Canyon Lake kicked off to start the game thinking the wind would help, but after La Grange’s first

drive against that blustery wind the game was not going to get better. Eight plays and 58 yards in four minutes was the result.

Equate this game to a rodeo, the Leopards would stop the Hawk’s runners like a cowboy would rope a calf and tie the legs. The Hawk runners were tackled and very seldom would be able to gain more yardage.

All the keys for CL in making this game competitive was lost in those first few minutes.

The Hawks needed to have long drives to help the defense and put pressure on La Grange.

Result? The Hawks amassed 36 yards on their first five drives which resulted in one first down.

After those five drives the score was La Grange 35 Canyon Lake 0.

Add a bad snap on a punt giving the Leopards another score before half and all this CL team could do was get warm in their dressing room.

The second half had La Grange calling off the Leopards scoring a safety and touchdown and being content with a well deserved win.

La Grange was all class in this game as this contest was coming to a close finding themselves on the Hawk’s 1 yard line and taking a knee to run out the clock.

Canyon Lake did serve notice for the coming years, when they showed some promise as the ground work was being laid with an offense that will be able to be refined as lower grades and this crop of players continue to hone their skill set to be more consistent.

Josh DeVries finished this game with a 23 yard run for the Hawk’s only score and pride for a season that started with anguish turned into a campaign that went two rounds in the playoffs while improving each week.

On that last Hawk drive, the future was evident as Sophomore Robert Woods with 7 yards, Junior Austin Acosta with 16 yards and Junior Josh DeVries finishing with 36 yards and his touchdown run.

Yes, this game was ZZ Top taking the Hawks to that little shack outside La Grange but let’s make it a point not to go back to that shack.

Good luck to the Leopards as they continue their playoff run.

Game Quotes:

On what this team accomplished this season.
Coach Drum: “We came out with great effort this year and this club showed perseverance and mental toughness by overcoming adversity after starting 0-6. I told this team that this will help them to apply what they learned to how they will handle life.”

On what the Seniors would like to share with the underclassman.
Offensive Lineman Cory Ruston: “When you get your opportunity then don’t let it go because it hurts when it is gone. Don’t hold back and give 100% and just be reckless.”

Linebacker Dominic Theisz: “Make the playoffs, keep it (the playoffs) going. Take every game like it is your last game.”

Offensive Lineman Justin Monfils: “Never give up and no matter how far you are up or down, always play the same….it went away fast…way too fast.”

Running Back McGuire Johnson: “I am really jealous that Coach Moses did not come earlier and these players will get to play for him longer…Learn from what we did and capitalize and develop during the off season….this goes by quickly and La Grange is a hell of a team.”

The ReSporter would also like to thank Laura Theisz for supplying the photos these past two years. Her willingness to help this publication was valuable and made the articles come alive with those action shots.

Thank-you Laura!!!!

COACHES CORNER

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Charles Drum after a practice this week and was

Coach Charles Drum

Coach Charles Drum

able to talk about the Hawks and their upcoming game with La Grange.

The ReSporter: Tell us what you are expecting in your game this week with La Grange.

Coach Drum: “La Grange is the best team on paper in our bracket…they are very well coached and their defense flies to the ball and offensively they can be physical and fast.”

The ReSporter: I guess that is why they are ranked 9th in the State?

Coach Drum: “Yes, when you get in the second round you start to get the best teams.”
