Canyon Lake Volleyball will be starting their District 27-3A season this Friday at Navarro.

The ReSporter has studied the games played by their district counterpoints up to this point to test how they might stack up as the season starts up.

“Our district is tough,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said. “One of the toughest in 3A, but I am fine with a challenge.”

One of the first items to note is how tough this district will be while studying their games and teams played.

midway through September?

Coach Paisley: “We have made improvements since August 5th. I feel some of us have come out of our shell and are ready to step it up.”

The ReSporter: What are some of the things you are still working on to get this team ready for district play?

Coach Paisley: “We have been working on our offense as far as attacks and getting comfortable doing those in a match. I have also been putting in game scenarios on the scoreboard and having them work on that mental aspect of “We are down by two and the score is 20-22 them…” Then they have to learn to battle back.”

Bracken Christian Bagged the Jags on Saturday night in a nail biter, 34-27.

“This game hinged on three key plays,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields fielded. “The last drive we had showed we have character, we had two tough series near the end of the game on offense and defense, and all of our young man played well.”

This game started with a two play drive from the feet of Running Back Noah Boriack when he had his first run go for 52 yards and helping the Warriors draw first blood.

Boriack would end this game with 5 touchdown runs and that will put him with some pretty good company in BCS lore.

Little Things Turn into a Big Loss to Burnet, 34-7

Saturday, September 21st, 2013

Canyon Lake could not hold the water back as the Bulldogs scored 27 unanswered points, losing 34-7 on a soggy Homecoming night at Hawk Field.

“We have to figure out how to cut out those little things,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We can’t overcome penalties and turnovers and we are lacking in getting big plays.”

These two former district foes from days gone by were still locked into an anyone can win contest well into the third quarter as Burnet just led 13-7 with three minutes left in that quarter.

Then the proverbial dam broke with a rush of passes as Burnet’s Quarterback Derek Kiser passed for 289 yards to finish off the Hawks.

Sometimes a team is just better than what is put out on the field and after this game, the Hawks can safely say this is the case.

CL Freshman Showing improvement in Loss to Burnet, 27-8

Friday, September 20th, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman still making strides while improving with each contest as Burnet came from behind to beat the Hawks, 27-8 last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium.

The Hawks scored their first touchdown of this season after Keith Hutson intercepted a pass on Burnet’s first drive of the game.

That interception and 20 yard return from Hutson set up Canyon Lake on Burnet’s 35 yard line.

Then Tyler Shipman took a hand off on the left side of the line for 32 yards and a first down on the 3 yard line. One play later Shipman got the call again for that first taste of scoring this year.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach what are you thinking with this week’s game?

Coach Fields: “This will be a game that will come down to two or three key plays and either we will make them or they will make them.”

The ReSporter: That sounds like you feel both teams are pretty even.

Coach Fields: “We are a lot alike and this week’s game will tell us how we are going to come out this season. We are at a cross roads of our season and our kids are really focused.”

The ReSporter: You said the kids are focused, what are they focused on?

Mountain Valley 7th A and B Squads put Bullpups in the Pound

Friday, September 20th, 2013

Mountain Valley A squad potty trained the Burnet Bullpups in Thursday night action at Hawk Field, 22-0.

Trenton Lorett decided to get his dog trained and took the Bullpups for several long runs that eventually caused a dog with a long tongue hanging and needing rest.

“When I got hit at the first of the game, it got me mad and that helped me get into the game and I just got faster,” Lorett surmised.

This might be something Mountain Valley Coaches might want to remember when track season starts this next year to help Lorett before he has a race…(do ask his parent’s first though)

Lorett not only averaged over 24 yards per carry, the never be denied runner intercepted a pass before half and 76 yards later had Mountain Valley in control 16-0 in this contest.

“I didn’t look at the clock and I just got the ball and started running,” Lorett said nonchalantly talking about his interception.

BCS 50 Prairie Lea 00 HEW 55 Hou. Mount Carmel 13

This is a fun time for The ReSporter. In 6-man Football you do not find many times when you can find information about your opponent and this is one school that does a great job of giving those entities and this gives The ReSporter a chance to do a more complete report.

Both schools started this year with a loss and are currently working on a two game winning streak.

A lot has changed from this game that was played in 2011 when both schools were working on 15 or more game winning streaks when they met.

Emery-Weiner has one constant that many other 6-man schools cannot possess. They have don’t have to worry about losing a player and possibly canceling a game.

The Bracken Christian parking lot will have a much larger bus occupying a space to bring this group of players.

Each game this season has had a break down of sorts.

Offense in the first game with Blanco which was predictable based on that being the first game with a new offense.
