Track Season will open today in Blanco Stadium at 3:30pm.

Canyon Lake has been more consistent and competitive in Track than any other sport.

The Hawks have finished 2nd in District Meet the last two seasons and will be wanting to continue that trend as this season gets into the starting blocks.

Track season cannot be mentioned without mentioning Senior Jordan Anderson who can many times be worth 40-50 points per meet.

This young man scored 48 points in last year’s District Track Meet and will look to continue to be that athlete trying to best previous marks.

To put this in a different motif, Anderson scored 48 points and Bandera had 42 in last year’s District 27-3A Track Meet.

Taylor Irby and Jordan Paty were Consolation Champs in Boy’s Doubles.

Jarrett Schech was Consolation Champ in Boy’s Singles.

Rebecca De La Cruz and Kayla Burh were Consolation Champs in Girl’s Doubles.

Shelby Merritt and Sarah Jones finished in 3rd for Girl’s Doubles.

Hailey Jones was Consolation Champ for Girl’s Singles.

Canyon Lake has a four game winning streak after an ugly win over Lago Vista

Vikings after their 1-day delayed affair at the Hawk Diamond.

The game that was scheduled for Monday night was postponed by wind and CL continued this season by settling in on a four game win streak which has not happened since, since, well it has never happened.

This is now the longest streak of this sort since two three game winning streaks during their 2010 season. A season that was climaxed with a trip to Harlingen and one batter short of a third round opponent.

“We need to work on our mental toughness and we’ve got to focus,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. ”

The Vikings opened up their first inning with a towering home run by Mason Ornales who would also finish off this game with another shot over that same left field fence in the seventh inning.

Both home runs were solo shots, but good hits all the same.

The Hawks responded in their bottom of the first when lead off hitter Garrett Winters walked and eventually scored when Logan Felch knocked him in two batters later.

Travis Walker reached base on an error and then with two runner on Michael Brady broke out of a mini slump with a double scoring both runners. Brady would end with two hits.

Hitting machine, Kyler Huff then did likewise with a double scoring the fourth run knocking in Brady.

Huff has been on a tear this season from the plate and does not seem to be letting up.

The Canyon Lake boys golf team battled the winds and tough golf course at Vaaler Creek in Blanco on Tuesday to shoot 382 placing 4th in the 18 team event.

With winds gusting over 50 miles an hour at times it made the conditions exceptionally brutal.

New Braunfels Canyon placed first at 370, Wimberley shot a 372 and New Braunfels was third with 379.

On a day where pars were very few and far between the day was one of survival.

One of those players that survived these conditions was the Hawk’s Sophomore Garrett Winters who shot 84 which put him on the leaderboard in 2nd place. Marion’s Robert Giesecke shot 83 to lead the field.

Winters scorecard included 1 birdie and 7 pars over the par 72 layout.

JJ Herrera finished with a 95, which included a birdie on number 1 and 2 pars. Senior Ralph Gonzales shot 96 which included one par. Andrew Riali rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with a 106.

Skyler Tschoepe had to withdraw after 10 holes after sensing pain in the shoulder.

The Hawks will return to action next Wednesday when they will travel to Quicksand GC in Wimberley.

Bracken Christian has four players named to the 2012-13 Academic All-State 6

Man Football list.

Three Juniors and one Senior made the list and deserve just as much accolades for this nugget than yardage gained or tackled.

Eli Achilles was the lone Senior making this list after excelling on the athletic and books side just as well. Achilles’ will walk across a stage later this year and so now you need to work on your books just like you do in sports.

You can’t miss in this world with that combination. Congratulations.

Davis Scott, Preston Koch, and Sam Hilgendorf also made this prestigious list and will return for another year.

Davis Scott played several positions and even changed his main position during last year’s campaign. That alone tells you how this young man made this honor.

Preston Koch is a methodical player that gets things done on the gridiron and you can get that same idea, that he takes his school work in like manner.

Sam Hilgendorf is growing in stature physically as well as through his studies and you too are a student that will do well by staying on this same course.

Congrats to all four athletes, this was your biggest highlight of this season.

Canyon Lake has now reached last year’s win total as the Hawks took care of the little things to win big over Austin Lanier Vikings, 7-3.

“Glad we got to three wins,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant dead panned. “Let’s don’t shut down main street for a parade just yet.”

Baseball is won more by doing little things within a game and when a team is successful in that execution, then a win will usually be a result.

“If you don’t hit the ball then your opponent can’t have fielding errors,” Coach Dunavant said eloquently. “We need to get on a roll to get things right and just win.”

Little things like hitting a ball and giving yourself a chance to have your opponent make a mistake. Lanier finished with seven errors in this game.

The Lanier Vikings did have some fielding problems and CL did what good teams are suppose to do when given gifts.

Canyon Lake will be baseball central this week as your Hawks will entertain four teams from around the state for the Comal ISD Tournament. There will other games played at the Hawk field so if you want to take in other games, then contact Comal Athletic Department.

The Hawks had a decent week of games with a couple of run ruled games in the Lockhart Tournament and also a good competitive game with Marble Falls on opening night.

This is not the same team that has graced Hawk Field in recent years as both Varsity and JV are having some great results with depth out the wazoo.

The Varsity finished their tournament 3-0 by winning Saturday over Austin Lanier.

CLJV baseball team had a win over Wimberley on Friday night and have several players that deserve some attention.

Girls Soccer also had a significant win this past week taking on and beating Seguin, 4-0. Soccer does not have as many teams as other sports so CL plays in a 4A division with other brought up 3A squads.

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity took care of Wimberley in their first District 27-3A game giving the Texans a long ride home, winning 6-4.

After a rough start in that first inning, Canyon Lake’s defense buckled down and did not commit another misplay allowing their bats to come alive and their pitchers finish off our neighbors to the north.

William Volz started the first inning having to adjust after some defensive miscues but that learning process is what will pay dividends as this season matures.

“I started pretty good,” Pitcher Volz said. “It kind of makes me think on what I need to work on…I was a little frustrated but then I just let it go and then tried my hardest.”

Volz was commenting on how he approached those first couple of innings while only having a texas leaguer as the biggest hit and no other ball scared the grass in the outfield.

Canyon Lake continues strong run in Lockhart Tournament with another run rule win over Austin Travis, 12-0.

Pitcher Ryan Hutcheson was well in command in this affair without allowing a hit in his four innings of work.

Kyler Huff is on a good hitting pace so far this season as he ripped a triple in this game while driving in two runs.

Canyon Lake started this game on fire scoring five runs and ended up scoring in each inning as the Hawks are over the .500 mark for the first time in three years.

In baseball you need Pitching, Batting, and Fielding and in all three the Hawks got a passing grade.

Ten hits, no errors and a shut out will do wonders for your win-loss column.

Now Canyon Lake will play again in Lockhart at noontime and see about running their streak up to three games.
