CLJV Boys Finish in Second Place in Texan Tournament

Saturday, December 1st, 2012

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity had a good run, finishing second in the Wimberley Baskeball Tournament this past weekend.

The Hawks won their morning contest against host Wimberley, which gave this never say die team a chance for a first place trophy.

Wimberley had a defense that forced eight turnovers in that first quarter and that allowed your Hawks only six shots at their basket.

Four made free throws helped close the gap for just a three point deficit going into their next quarter of action.

CL would win their next three quarters as the Hawks started taking better control of their possessions.

The third quarter was a telling stanza as Garret Winters was red hot from behind the arc scoring 12 points (all 3 pointers) that gave the separation from our friends to the North.

CL Boys are in Championship game in Marion Tourney After Win

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Canyon Lake more scores from todays Tournaments:

The Hawks Freshman team split their two games on Friday in Wimberley and will have a morning game Saturday which will decide what place they will be playing for that afternoon.

A win will have the CL Freshman playing for 3rd Place and a loss will have your Hawks playing for 5th Place.

The Freshman were led by Hayden Lee in their win over Gonzales as 11 players were able to get on in the scoring book.

A good all around game.

In their second game the opposite was true, everything that fell in their first game would not go through the hoop in the second game.

CL Has Three Tournaments this Week-End

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Tournament Time for Canyon Lake as Varsity Boys are in Marion, Varsity Girls are in Johnson City, and JV and Freshman Boys are playing in Wimberley.

CL Boys JV team won their second game on Friday and will play again in tomorrow at 9am against Wimberley with the winner playing for a Championship and loser for Third Place at Wimberley.

In CLJV second game, the Hawks were never threatened as this Gonzales JV team could not outscore any of CL’s individual quarters using every quarter adding up to only 13 total points.

Canyon Lake was lead by a whole host of players, but Garrett Winters was almost perfect with only one missed shot for the game.

Winters finished with 17 points and Austin Acosta had 16 points while also distributing six assists against the Apaches.

The Hawks shot 73% from beyond the three point arc and a salty 48% from the field in this game.

Nic Adams had 10 rebounds and seven players along with Acosta dished out an assist.

Total domination for your Hawks in this contest as the clock hit 6:30 left in the first quarter a three point shot from Trendon Martinez gave CL a lead that would never be threatened.

“We have an improving offense and we are moving the ball more,” Coach Brian Hooper said. “We did not make mistakes and we were taking good shots and hustling for the whole game.”

Hard to critique a 60 point win, but you could look at those free throws if you wanted to find something to do in your next practice.

Maybe you can petition the Basketball Officials and see if you could move that charity stripe back to the three point line.

Varsity Boys won their first game in Marion Tournament.
Varsity Girls lost their first game in Johnson City Tournament. Lago Vista won 47-36.
Freshman Boys finished 1-1 with a 53-23 victory over Gonzales and their loss was to St. Michael.

CL Girls Basketball Starts Season, 6-0, Beat Luling, 41-40

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Canyon Lake girls basketball increased their winning streak to six games, after winning an overtime game last Tuesday night against Luling, 41-40.

By far the best start in the short history of Canyon Lake Basketball as the Hawks held on for a win by the thinnest of margins.

CL, now has a winning margin of 20 points on this streak and games will start getting tougher, as the Hawks have a couple of upcoming tournaments and a Lampasas game on the horizon.

Eight different Hawks scored in this game and Sophomore Kyndall Drum had high point honors with eight points.

Amber Ramsey and Katie Williams once again combined for a low total (12 points), which can also be a blessing, since this will be a long season and more chances where the rest of their teammates will have to respond to continue a chance for another win.

CL clamped down on Luling in the second half by holding the Eagles to only 12 points, including an overtime period.

Lots of depth, which can only help as many road blocks can present themselves during a season and game situations.

Bracken says Farewell to their Achilles Tandem

Sunday, November 25th, 2012

The first year of The Hilltop Reporter Newspaper, this reporter was talking to second year Head Coach

Bracken's Grady Achilles now playing for Incarnate Word

Lloyd Fields with Bracken Christian football team.

Coach Fields was giving a run down on what type of team he would be fielding that season (2009).

Coach Fields informed The Hilltop Reporter that his starting quarterback would be a freshman and one might have wondered that there could be a chance for a rocky year.

Bracken Christian had lost seven seniors from the previous season to boot.

However this ’09 Team had a break out season with a final four appearance and a squad that quite possibly could win a championship in future years.

During the playoffs that same year, BCS would be meeting a team that the Warriors had played earlier that season.

It was a large team (Tomball Rosehill Christian) in 6-man lingo, with several players over 200lbs and height to compliment that in spades.

Watching that game was an eye opener as this defensive back that was not even six feet tall, yet, had taken on one of those gladiators at the goal line and held his ground as this player planted his cleats right on the chest of this young man on his way to a touchdown.

BCS Finishes Strong Season in Loss to Abilene Panthers

Sunday, November 25th, 2012

Bracken Christian met their match as they were 45ed by Abilene Christian at Zephyr, Texas last Saturday, 80-35.

“We ran into a team that was better than us,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “We got the most out of this team than we could expect.”

“We had no depth and then when we got a couple injured in the second half we were dead in the water,” Fields finished.

This game started off as two heavyweights going to battle, as each offensive unit kept alternating scoring right up to halftime. Then the Panthers made a defensive stop and scored going into their locker room, which helped increase a four point deficit to 12 points, 40-28.

Two initial drives to start the game by both teams did not result in scores, but a one-play, 53-yard pass for the Panthers broke the ice halfway into that first quarter.

Bracken responded with a 68 yard run from Eli Achilles that brought BCS to within one point, 8-7.

On Bracken’s third drive, two Achilles-to-Preston-Koch passes for 35 yards helped set up another score, keeping the Warriors to within three points of the Panthers, 24-21.

An interception from Sam Hilgendorf (his first of two for this game), had the Warriors with a chance to take their first lead in this battle.

Early in that quarter Eli Achilles found John Colby on a dump pass giving your Warriors their first lead in this game, 28-24.

Unfortunately it would be Bracken’s last lead.

On Abilene Christian’s next drive, the Panthers drove 52 yards on six plays, when running back, JD Dos Santos, rumbled in from 12 yards out. Establishing a 32-28 advantage for the Panthers, all four points were based on bonus kicks.

Bracken Warriors Flying Under the Radar

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

Bracken Christian has a gaudy 37-2 record over the past three years or how about a winning percentage of .949 during that time span.

Not to shabby is it, want more?

Those two losses were by a combined six points.

BCS during that same time frame has outscored their opponents by 988 points and of those 37 wins 22 have not gone four quarters because of the Mercy Rule. (If winning by 45 or more points after halftime, the game is called.)

Bracken has been to the final four for three years and counting. They are one game from advancing this year.

BCS, as they prepare for Abilene Christian Panthers, do not get much credit for a pretty nice resume as this upcoming game has your Warriors as much as a 35 point underdog.

The reason? Texas is a large State.

Take a map out and find out all you can about an El Paso six-man squad.

Hawks Freshman Boys Beat Brahmas, 58-28

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

Canyon Lake Boy’s Freshman team had a refreshing win over Stockdale Freshman squad last Tuesday night at Hawk Gym, winning 58-28.

All the Hawks got into this game and contributed in some fashion. It was a good game to work on different aspects of their game for future encounters.

Justin Ferris finished with six points and was like many other players as both his field goals were from beyond the arc. There were several players that launched a barrage of shots from down town.

“It’s all in commitment,” Ferris started. “Everybody is working hard and knowing what to do.”

In games that get enough separation, you will find Coaches in a learning mode.

“Trying to feed the ball to the post men and get them into the game,” Ferris said after asked on what part of this game, Coach wanted them to work on.

“We are still trying to get into basketball shape from football shape,” Coach John Barthels said. “We have players that have not picked up a basketball in a year.”

Coach Barthels also commented on how he managed this game, “We were able to make better passes and started playing more as a team. Our defense picked up and we were in the right spots today for our press.”

This Canyon Lake team did not lose any intensity or skill level no matter how deep in the bench, Coach Barthels went.

“We are a very athletic team,” Coach Barthels finished.
