Evolution of the Running Game

Back in the days when the Hilltop Reporter was getting started, we scheduled a visit with Head Coach Matt Monzingo to find out all things Sports at Canyon Lake High School and specifically football.

While going over the offense with Coach Monzingo, the question was asked about the running game. The response from Coach Monzingo, “We did not have a running game last year.”

All the offensive stats coming from the Coaches that meeting revolved around the passing game.

The team with no seniors won one game that year. The record might have been a better if the running game would of been evident. (more…)

Three Weeks before Football Practice Starts

The Canyon Lake Football team does not have long before the new season will be upon them.

The Hawks finished 6-6 last season and missed going to the third round in the playoffs by one yard on a missed field goal.

Jessica’s 18th B-Day Party in Austin, May 13th

jessicaJessica Cunningham will be celebrating her birthday this coming Friday the 13th in Austin, as she attempts to acquire the ultimate gift at the State Track Meet.

This will be Cunningham’s second trip to Austin, the first trip she was a Sophomore at Smithson Valley and her eighth place finish was a great skin to have on the wall, but the Senior for Canyon Lake now has a higher goal. (more…)

Tailgate ‘down by the river’

tailgateThe Canyon Lake Softball team might have lost the game last Saturday, but their fans won the Tailgate.

It started on Friday night before the playoffs started, when walking to the game you would see the Hawk Flags and the group of students enjoying the pre/game festivities. The senior players talked about leaving a legacy and the students would like to start a tradition.

Canyon Lake Meets Buzz Saw in Playoffs

The Canyon Lake Hawks hit a buzz saw in their first play-off try against Lampasas Badgers, losing two games, April 29-30.
A little history first: Lampasas was undefeated in district last season in 4A with the same team. The difference was their pitcher quitting before the season started. The season had a learning curve for a team that had played together since their eight grade year.

The Hawks do have seniors, but most of the team is Sophomore ladened and the difference in those two years was very pronounced.

The first game was a ‘comedy’ of errors as Canyon Lake allowed the first four Badgers to reach base via a miscue. When the carnage was over Lampasas had accumulated five base runners by errors, three singles, two walks, and a double. (more…)
