The Canyon Lake Hawks finished the weekend with three very winnable games, but the ‘young’ guns finished with one win.

The Hawks are in a learning portion of the season as the team will be playing bigger schools for several games before the first district game in two weeks.

Coach Dunavant: “Yeah, we have a tough schedule, there are no slouches. The Canyon tournament expanded this year and we were caught playing larger schools. We are going with the phrase, ‘What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger’.” (more…)

The Canyon Lake Softball team has already passed last year’s win total and we are still in February. The Hawks pasted Blanco Panthers last Friday at Hawk Field by a score of 7-1.

Pitcher Missy Romero won her fifth game of the young season as she hit the spots around the plate leaving most of the Blanco line-up guessing at the plate. (more…)

022211-215132-jeff-naborsThe Hawks started the season with a loss to the Marble Falls Mustangs last Tuesday night at the Hawk diamond, losing 13-12.

The Hawks lost there first game last year to the same team, but last year the game was a rout and this season the Hawks almost pulled the upset.

Softball: Then and Now

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

softballThe Canyon Lake Softball team has not had a lot of momentum in the past few years. The team is one of the few team sports without a Junior Varsity team, which does not give the athletes the opportunity to play teams in the same age bracket.

The Junior Varsity Football team finished the season undefeated, but few would argue that the team would of been undefeated playing varsity teams this past season. The Hawks have played seven games going into this weeks Tuesday night game at the Hawks diamond. (more…)

Coaches Corner with Head Coach Trent Dunavant

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

The Canyon Lake Hawks Baseball team has finished the pre/season when they played last Friday night in Burnet.
The Hawks will be learning at a fast pace the next couple of weeks as they prepare for district play.

“We have a lot of young guys that need a lot of game repititions,” Head Coach Dunavant said. “ We are just inexperienced at some positions and it is going to take some time to get up to speed.”

The Hawks raced to a lead in the first inning and held on for one of the more impressive wins in the short history of the program, against San Antonio Roosevelt Rough Riders at the Hawk diamond.

The Rough Riders came into the game with a 4-1 record and also had the important 5A at the end of their name. Roosevelt competes with the largest high school classification and the Hawks introduced them to a lower Grade 3A. (more…)

Introduction: Where Sports is a Passion not a Job

Friday, February 18th, 2011

The remains of The Hilltop Reporter are not gone yet. The Drs. Found a pulse and now we will be operating as a Sports Page only.

Why? Look at the papers around the area and you will see the Canyon Lake Hawks don’t get a lot (if any) coverage. In fact, since the Hilltop Reporter started three years ago the team and school got more coverage than they had previously.

Competition will do that sometimes. This is where the phrase above got its emphasis.

Going to sporting events and being in the Press box with other writers covering the Hawks, I found that the writers were more concerned with their date for the weekend than the actual game they were watching. (more…)
