Hawks Win 3rd Game in Lockhart Tournament over Vikings, 7-3

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

Senior Travis Walker

Canyon Lake has now reached last year’s win total as the Hawks took care of the little things to win big over Austin Lanier Vikings, 7-3.

“Glad we got to three wins,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant dead panned. “Let’s don’t shut down main street for a parade just yet.”

Baseball is won more by doing little things within a game and when a team is successful in that execution, then a win will usually be a result.

“If you don’t hit the ball then your opponent can’t have fielding errors,” Coach Dunavant said eloquently. “We need to get on a roll to get things right and just win.”

Little things like hitting a ball and giving yourself a chance to have your opponent make a mistake. Lanier finished with seven errors in this game.

The Lanier Vikings did have some fielding problems and CL did what good teams are suppose to do when given gifts.

Open them!!

Canyon Lake will be baseball central this week as your Hawks will entertain four teams from around the state for the Comal ISD Tournament. There will other games played at the Hawk field so if you want to take in other games, then contact Comal Athletic Department.

Head Golf Coach Greg Norris

The Hawks had a decent week of games with a couple of run ruled games in the Lockhart Tournament and also a good competitive game with Marble Falls on opening night.

This is not the same team that has graced Hawk Field in recent years as both Varsity and JV are having some great results with depth out the wazoo.

The Varsity finished their tournament 3-0 by winning Saturday over Austin Lanier.

CLJV baseball team had a win over Wimberley on Friday night and have several players that deserve some attention.

Girls Soccer also had a significant win this past week taking on and beating Seguin, 4-0. Soccer does not have as many teams as other sports so CL plays in a 4A division with other brought up 3A squads.

CLJV Baseball send Texans Packing, 6-4

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

Pitcher William Volz

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity took care of Wimberley in their first District 27-3A game giving the Texans a long ride home, winning 6-4.

After a rough start in that first inning, Canyon Lake’s defense buckled down and did not commit another misplay allowing their bats to come alive and their pitchers finish off our neighbors to the north.

William Volz started the first inning having to adjust after some defensive miscues but that learning process is what will pay dividends as this season matures.

“I started pretty good,” Pitcher Volz said. “It kind of makes me think on what I need to work on…I was a little frustrated but then I just let it go and then tried my hardest.”

Volz was commenting on how he approached those first couple of innings while only having a texas leaguer as the biggest hit and no other ball scared the grass in the outfield.

Hawks Beat Austin Travis, 12-0 with Run Rule

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

Canyon Lake continues strong run in Lockhart Tournament with another run rule win over Austin Travis, 12-0.

Pitcher Ryan Hutcheson was well in command in this affair without allowing a hit in his four innings of work.

Kyler Huff is on a good hitting pace so far this season as he ripped a triple in this game while driving in two runs.

Canyon Lake started this game on fire scoring five runs and ended up scoring in each inning as the Hawks are over the .500 mark for the first time in three years.

In baseball you need Pitching, Batting, and Fielding and in all three the Hawks got a passing grade.

Ten hits, no errors and a shut out will do wonders for your win-loss column.

Now Canyon Lake will play again in Lockhart at noontime and see about running their streak up to three games.

Wow…there are a lot of threes in this article. Congrats!

Baseball: Hawks Run Rule Del Valle, 10-1

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Canyon Lake won their first game in the Lockhart Tournament on Thursday against

Head Coach Trent Dunavant

Austin Del Valle, 10-1.

“In other seasons we might have played down to our competition,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant started. “We played a crisp game and I was very pleased on how the players took care of business.”

An onslaught of six runs in the second inning put this game away early and also allowed Sophomore Cody Powell to throw strikes and let the Hawks play defense. Powell averaged a little over 12 pitches per inning.

“We wanted Powell to be in the 15 pitches are lower per inning,” Coach Dunavant said.

Defense came without any errors while CL benefitted from three errors by Del Valle.

Kyler Huff finished the day with three hits, three runs, two rbi’s, and one double.

Daniel Reed and Michael Brady also had doubles in this game.

With a three run 5th inning, the Hawks were able to run rule Del Valle which allowed Powell to go the distance.

That meant Canyon Lake could rest pitchers which will always a good thing for you first tournament of the season.

Now Canyon Lake will play again on Friday, with an early 10am start time. Austin Travis will be in that other dugout, then CL’s final game is Saturday against Austin Lanier with another game before lunch, 11:30 start time.

Marbles Fall on Hawks in 5th Inning in Loss, 4-3

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Play Ball!! Canyon Lake started their season against a solid 4A Marble Falls outfit and had a good

Pitcher Logan Felch

chance of pulling off an impressive win.

But that timely hit just did not find a spot on this field of play leaving a one run deficit to the Mustangs.

Speaking of timely hits, MF could only muster three and that last one happened to bring in three runs with a bases clearing double.

The fifth inning was a case where starter Logan Felch just ran out of gas and could not finish his outstanding start.

Felch had thrown just 11 balls through four innings and had 13 in the fifth giving the Mustangs an opening that was capitalized on.

“You can’t give freebies like that,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said in responding to also having a MF batter reaching base by being hit by a pitch, loading the bases.

The Hawks have started their season with Marble Falls each year and this game was won by a very slim margin compared to past campaigns.

Super Fan: Bill Phillips

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

Super Fan Mr. Bill Phillips can be seen at almost all of Canyon Lake’s venues

Bill Phillips enjoying a Baseball game in the warmth of a Press Box

cheering on young athletes in many fields.

You have seen him, he has that special place in the Hawk Gymnasium, up behind the student section, or walking up to a press box during a football game, or how about seeing Phillips hanging out at countless Baseball and Little League games.

“I played Junior High Softball because there was no baseball at my school,” Mr. Bill started. “With both of my brothers, we played every sport.”

So going back to Junior High days the seed had been planted and now you have ‘Super Fan’ still showing his support for athletes in the Canyon Lake community.

Just sitting by Bill and watching a game will give you wisdom as you listen to all of his recollections of games from the past.

Not to mention his countless one liners that are lined up inside his mind like every Baseball Coach would be preparing a line-up card.

Coaches know him as ‘Bill’ and seeing him at all of their games does not go unnoticed.

“My Dad played semi-pro baseball back in 1938 when we moved down to Houston,” Mr. Bill continued. “I have been around the kids watching them play and grow with all of their skills and attitudes.”

Baseball: CLJV wallops a YellowJacket, 15-7

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Canyon Lake JV dominates Llano in their last scrimmage before the season starts next week.

Catcher Bryce Dehlin showed that all Catchers aren't slow after hitting a triple.

Llano only had three pitchers for this scrimmage and that left Canyon Lake taking the field for an extra two frames just so Coach Brian Owens could get enough work from his six pitchers.

What Coach Owens saw was another dominating performance from several of his players on the mound as strikes and defense kept Llano without a run until their last at bat.

Look at these numbers from four Hawk pitchers:

name ip r er h bb so balls/strikes
 Headrick 2 0 0 0 0 3 9/18
 McCleary 2 0 0 3 1 3 11/23
 Volz 1 0 0 0 1 1 5/11
 Kissell 2 0 0 0 3 3 21/16

As the night progressed so did the wind and temperature as the last inning was a numbing affair.

Varsity Baseball: Is Pleased with game against Burnet

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Watching Baseball through new Screen.

The Hawk Varsity Baseball team had a satisfactory scrimmage at Burnet last Tuesday night.

Yes, this was a scrimmage meaning that you don’t have a winner or losing team, but after having two years where everything that could go wrong going wrong, then The ReSporter will give your Hawks the win last evening.

“The game went good last night,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “We would’ve won if this would not had been a scrimmage.”

Canyon Lake had two glaring problems in the past two campaigns: Pitching and fielding would be those nagging weights that bogged down this team in the past.

Night and Day is Difference in CLJV Baseball Games

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Hawk JV Baseball team won their scrimmage game against Burnet Tuesday at the Hawk Diamond.

The Hawk's JV team improves their game in win over Burnet

This game started during the daylight which was the phrase used by Coach Brian Owens when comparing their game with Seguin last week.

“Night and day from last week,” Coach Owens commented when asked the difference in their last two contests. “We have been working on focusing in the game and talked about the mental side of the game.”

The Hawks won this 11 inning affair 10-8 as CL held Burnet to only one run in their last eight innings.

A slow start as the Hawks found themselves down 7-4 after three innings and then 8-4 after the sixth.

That would be the Bulldogs last run of this game as Headrick, Kissell, Volz, and McCleary closed the door on Burnet for the rest of this outing.

Ten strikeouts and four walks was a winning formula along with a much sharper defensive game as this contest matured.

“We had a good game but we started slow,” Jordan Weber started. “We made our way to the top and were more consistent and we had our plays down. We also communicated more as a team.”

Yes, this was just a scrimmage, but Canyon Lake’s JV team had a lot of good pitchers take the mound and sound defense and timely hitting.

Wait, that is what suppose to happen in baseball when you want to be successful.

Just two errors and cutting down on walks was a whole different team playing from last week’s game.

This team will be fun to watch this year, in fact, you will have another chance this Friday, when Canyon Lake plays Llano in a makeup game cancelled last week.

Come on out for the Day game and hopefully the Night game will have bright lights on for another win.
