 ===============================================

Canyon Lake Lady’s Basketball lost their Friday game with Wimberley but with Gonzales taking some lumps from Navarro guaranteed CL to qualify after this Tuesday’s game.

Stay tuned to Hilltop and we will get you info on where and who the Hawks will be playing.

Congratulations!!

Likewise, the Boy’s Basketball squad finished the week 1-1 and will take on La Vernia this Tuesday.

The Hawks would settle things with an upset over the Bears this Tuesday.

Canyon Lake will have one other game a week later against Yoakum and the Bulldogs helped the Hawks cause immensely when they lost their game to Cuero last Friday.

The Boys team is coupled with CL’s Boys Soccer as the only team sport to yet make it out of district play by qualifying for playoffs.

Hawk Soccer has started to make some noise this season as they sport a 7-4 record and presently on a 5 game winning streak.

That will be the same until district starts up in two weeks and finding a way to also qualify for the playoffs would make this season one of the best in Hawk Sport’s history.

This week CL beat a high caliber team in San Marcos Academy on Tuesday and then followed that win with their first home win on Friday over Burnet.

CL’s Girls Soccer finished this past week with 2 ties with one of those games having the Hawks coming back from a 3 goal deficit.

Softball is still in exhibition stage with Harper’s game this Tuesday being the last game before contests start counting.

Baseball will also be starting this week as the Spring Schedule starts to get interesting.

The Varsity Tennis will have their first competition this Friday as they will travel to Georgetown’s Kerry Minzenmayer Classic.

There has to be a sport you can come and support this year’s Spring edition for Hawk sports.

Go Hawks!!

Hawks Charged For Playing in Own Gym, Texans Win, 58-49

Will Gray dished out 5 Assists in loss to Texans

Will Gray dished out 5 Assists in loss to Texans

Canyon Lake had their moments in a loss to Wimberley but those moments were fleeting as CL fell short, 58-49.

“They were on the boards and being physical and that limited our chances,” Coach Brian Hooper said as he filled in for an ill Coach Chapman. “We did a good job of breaking their press and we did some good things.”

Hawk fans have heard it before, but the free throw line was their downfall as the Texans took advantage with sharpshooting while the misses would be rebounded by the team in red for another chance of scoring.

Which Wimberley did on 6 different occasions for more points. Add those missed opportunities up and it would more points than this 9 point loss.

Oh yeah, that same free throw line for CL turned into 40% shooting or another six point left on the hardwood.

Hawks Fly High Over Gobblers, 61-34

Senior Brandon Ward scored 21 points in game with Cuero

Canyon Lake did what needed to be done to realize their chance for a playoff game by flying away from the Cuero Gobblers on Tuesday night, 61-34.

Brandon Ward was the hot player on this night as he finished with 21 points and making 4 shots from beyond the arc.

The Hawks also had surprise points from Gerrit Wilkins and Sam Langford as these two players combined for 20 point to offset the scoring woes from Rory Preiss and Will Gray.

Canyon Lake is averaging right at 10 points a game from Ward, Preiss, and Gray for district play and having those two players combine with 7 points meant other players would need to step up.

Hawks Can’t Make Enough Noise in Loss to Navarro, 59-56

Senior Sam Langford and other Hawks will need to dig deep as Season comes to a climax

Senior Sam Langford and other Hawks will need to dig deep as Season comes to a climax

Canyon Lake fell behind by 9 points in the first quarter and could not recover in their loss to first place Navarro, 59-56 in Friday’s night game at the Hawk Nest.

“We did some good stuff and this is a team that thrives in that 4th quarter,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman opened. “We beat them in the 4th but we need to play the whole game.”

Navarro had won their last game against the Hawks by blitzing CL turning a 1 point game to a 10 point win. In two other wins this season the Panthers had that same formula in wins over Wimberley and La Vernia.

The Hawks have a way of letting one quarter getting away and not playing at an energy level needed for completing contests.

Navarro came out of the chute with a 3pointer and CL was playing from behind for the remainder of this game.

Coaches Corner with Boys Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman

The ReSporter: How much did all the fouls interfere with the flow of the game last night?

Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman

Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman

Coach Chapman: “It was a very long and choppy game. They were very aggressive from the start, which led to a lot of early fouls. It was hard to get into a rhythm offensively, but it wasn’t completely detrimental to what we were trying to do. Other than not capitalizing on shooting 50 FTs, we did very well.”

The ReSporter: Were you pleased with the overall play from the team?
Coach Chapman: “I was very pleased with our effort and energy and how we played. It was a tough game. Give Gonzales credit for coming out and playing really hard and making it tough. That is a place that is always tough to play at, so to come out of there with a grind it out win was huge. Good teams and playoff teams find ways to win games like that, and we did. I was very proud of our guys and the resiliency they showed.”

The ReSporter: How will you approach this Friday’s game with Navarro? (more…)

Rory Preiss is high point scoring 16 points in Hawk’s win over Gonzales

Canyon Lake, with last night’s win over Gonzales, accomplished something never seen on the hard wood with their 4th district win in a season.

The Hawks took care of business beating the Apaches, 59-47 and now sport a 4-3 District 26-4A record going into their game with Navarro this Friday at the Hawk Nest.

Rory Preiss led CL with 16 points while Brandon Ward showed the rest of the Hawks how to score from the charity stripe in scoring 12 points.

Canyon Lake had 51 chances of scoring points from the free throw line and cashed in just 23 times with Ward sinking 10 of those tries.

Another good game on the boards with 47 and 17 of those rebounds came on the offensive side.

 =====================================================

Canyon Lake had a decent week in court last week as both Varsity teams won needed games as their district race matures into the latter stages.

The Lady Hawks needed a win over Yoakum as they now have a legit chance of making the playoffs.

That chance will be front and center this Tuesday as CL will travel to Gonzales for another must win as it was the Apache’s who won the first contest the first of January.

Canyon Lake showed in their last game they have some fire power scoring over 70 points and having several players contributing.

That game will need to be repeated again this week for the Girls as they showed during the first round with a winnable game against Navarro.

Playing at home on Friday might be that little extra needed to carry that game in the win column for the home team.

A sweep will make a mark and a break even week will give the Hawks more must win games in the weeks to come.

Canyon Lake Boys finished the first round 3-3 and if that can be repeated then a ticket to the playoffs would be next.

The Hawks have proven they could win more as they too played Navarro to the end earlier this year.

For CL to realize a better record the Hawks will need to not let up on any quarter as last Friday’s game the energy level was good enough for Yoakum but that same energy will be losses to the 3 teams presently ahead of them in the standings.

This second round of games will have Navarro and Wimberley playing at the Hawk Nest and that ingredient might be a missing link that could carry CL to a surprising finish.

Girls Soccer finished last week with a 1-0-1 record and this team certainly broke out with a 9 goal game on Friday beating Pleasanton.

“This game was a great confidence booster for our team,” Head Coach Ryan Tierney said.  “Every game I ask my girls to go have fun playing the game they fell in love with.”

That was certainly evident in this win as Canyon Lake got a goal from six different ladies.

“I feel the girls genuinely love each other and want to see everyone be successful,” Coach Tierney said. “ This game proves we play a team game, the way it’s meant to be played.”

Coach Tierney was making a point on this years club. The Hawks will be on the road this week and both games are very winnable and if CL can get these two wins, then they will be 6-2-1 going into their last week of non-district games.

The Boys Soccer team finished 1-1 this past week after playing a potent Giddings team and then getting back on track with a win over Pleasanton.

CL Boys Soccer will be on the road this week with games with La Vernia and Lampasas as this non-district schedule will come to a close after next week’s games.

Canyon Lake presently sports a 3-4 record and will look to improve on that mark in these next 4 games.

Go Hawks!!
