CLJV relishing an after game talk after a solid win

CLJV, relishing an after game talk, after a solid win

This might be a good year for Canyon Lake football as the CLJV finally got that long awaited win as they took the Blanco Panthers to the wood shed on Thursday night winning, 27-8.

“They got after it this week against the Varsity and it showed,” Head JV Coach John Barthels said. “This year, the Offensive Line knows where to go.”

That was an understatement as Canyon Lake rushed for over 300 yards while averaging a lofty 9 yards per carry.

With all that being said, this game was won as the Hawks were clinging to a 13-8 lead to start the second half.

Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Lloyd FieldsHead Coach Lloyd Fields

The ReSporter: Hey Coach have you had a chance to get that ‘blahh’ feeling after last week’s scrimmage during this week’s practices out of your system?

Coach Fields: “Yes and no, today’s practice was better but the bottom line is that we are still young and we are just trying to fight through it.”

The ReSporter: Is it hard for a crowded field football team to transition to 6-Man?

Coach Fields: “I don’t know, I have never been in that position but many times it is hard for an 11-Man to play 6-Man with 11-Man tactics.”

Pre/Game: Bracken Warriors vs. Temple Holy Trinity Celtics

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

Bracken Christian Warriors           @         Temple Holy Trinity Celtics      August 29th   7:30pm

 Game: Hawks and Celtics

 This Season's Games: First Game

 Series History: First Game

Bracken Christian will be going into the twilight zone to start this season as this Warrior team will be facing off with a school that has played in a crowded field arena and is moving down to 6-Man game.

That would usually not be that big of a deal, except that BCS is not playing with a full deck as they have in previous years.

In last week’s scrimmage, Bracken had just three players keeping Head Coach Lloyd Fields company on the sideline.

Warriors Have ‘Blahh’ Scrimmage

Saturday, August 23rd, 2014

Bracken Christian ended their preseason scrimmages on a ‘blahhhh’ note as the Warriors went

Senior Coy Zunker

through the motions in a game with San Antonio New Life.

Both teams were short on having companions for their head coach on the sideline as New Life dressed 7 players while BCS could only muster two more.

New Life started their first series with a 60 yard run that helped up the ante for Bracken to get a game face on.

That would be New Life’s final score of the game.

“We only had 15 offensive plays and scored on four of them,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields started. “To play on this level (High School), the younger players will have to get better and we have three days to get there.”

Canyon Lake last pre season scrimmage was staged on a Thursday in front of a home crowd that had a chance to grasp what type of entertainment will be performed starting next Friday in Blanco.

Medina Valley was our guest this Thursday evening and from a Varsity stand point both teams seemed pretty even as these two clubs finished their battle with two live 12 minute quarters.

Canyon Lake won that part of scrimmage with a 7-0 score after scoring in the second quarter when Senior Josh DeVries broke a 45 yard run around the right end helping set up a score four plays later moving16 yards.

Coaches Corner with Canyon Lake’s Charley Drum

Coaches Corner with Canyon Lake’s Charley Drum.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, what are your overall thoughts after the first scrimmage against Gonzales?

Head Coach Charley Drum

Head Coach Charley Drum

Coach Drum: “I thought we responded well to adversity, our offense did not start well and then they scored on their first play. We had an open 12 minute quarter and our offense took the ball for a score while taking 11 minutes off the clock. Then our defense held them to a 3 and out series. I don’t think they will be wanting to scrimmage us again since we did not give them much time to work.

I like how our kids responded and showed mental toughness early in this season.”

The ReSporter: Did you find out anything about your defensive backs and other players?

Coach Drum: “Well, we came out of the game healthy and we tackled well. We had some players that got some separation. All of our defensive line tackled well for a first scrimmage.”

The ReSporter: What will you be working on as you get ready for next week’s scrimmage on Thursday? (more…)

BCS Beats the Heat in Scrimmage

Saturday, August 16th, 2014

Bracken Christian results from their Mystery Tour are in with a resounding scrimmage in Prairie Lea yesterday.

Warriors taking a break during practice.

Warriors taking a break during practice.

In Coach Lloyd Fields talk earlier this week, he had mentioned that this year’s team is a mystery without knowing how some players would react.

Well, scoring 11 times and only giving up three touchdowns would be considered a successful day of work.

Granted, this group of teams will not be carrying any banners in a Parade this year, but when you are on a mystery tour yourself, then surviving and playing well would be a good barometer.

As the Hawk’s Offensive Line goes, so goes Canyon Lake

Behemoths: Jonathan McGuire, Austin Kahil, Tristan Woodruff and Gordon McCleary

The ReSporter will always try to get their first article on the Offensive Line for many reasons.

They are bigger than The ReSporter and you always want to be sure they are happy. Another reason is simple, your offense and defensive lines will be that main ingredient for having a good team.

Winning a battle in the trenches will dictate how the opponents will run their offense and defense. Winning this battle will usually result in a win.

This year, The ReSporter wants to start with the strong side of the offensive line. Being the second year with a Slot-T offense, this line will usually take on a lot of responsibilities on blocking for those running backs and hopefully many yards.
