Bracken Aces History Lesson in Win over Indians, 50-0

Saturday, September 14th, 2013

Bracken Christian took care of business in win over Prairie Lea last Friday night, 50-0.

These Indians had a rough time holding onto the ball as fumbles kept them in trouble throughout this contest.

A total of six fumbles while losing three had these Warriors on the War Path as they piled on and never let up in getting their first mercy game of this campaign.

A lot of Warriors were called on as seven players got the rock at least once and the rest of ancient history with this Indian squad that has not had a lot of success in their history.

Contrast those woes with Bracken Christian that started football in 2006 and have been to the playoffs in all but that first season. This Prairie Lea team’s last playoff date was back in 1944.

A Road Less Traveled as Hawks Lose eSpecially bad, 34-14

Special Teams was especially bad as Canyon Lake lost their way to La Vernia on Friday the 13th, 34-14.

Traveling this road is really not difficult, however this highway can be hard to maneuver as you trek for your destination.

La Vernia found a four lane highway to paydirt via their special team units and in particular Levi Andrews as he passed enough Hawks on both of his 75 yard returns by kickoff and punt returns.

That helped the Bears to a 19 point lead to start the game and they did not look in their rear view mirror the rest of the evening.

“We got to learn to put all three parts of our game together,” Head Coach Charley Drum opened. “Our special teams did not perform well tonight. We just have to get all three clicking and if when we learn that lesson then that should bode well as district approaches.”

CL Hawk Freshman are Growing Up in Loss to La Vernia, 8-0

Thursday, September 12th, 2013

The Hawk Freshman team showed great strides between their last two games as La Vernia wins 8-0 in a defensive

showdown.

That same improvement was also seen between the first and second half as CL had a different resolve when they took the field starting the third quarter.

“When we look back at the Hays game and how many freshman they had playing, I told the players that it does not matter how many the other team has, they can only play with 11 players the same as we have,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “We hit the hole quicker in the second half and that was one of our adjustments we made at halftime.”

The Hawks had the ball only once when they held The Bears with 2:10 left in the third quarter and then lost the ball on downs with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter.

Pre/Game: Bracken Warriors vs. Prairie Lea Indians

Wednesday, September 11th, 2013
Bracken Christian vs. Prairie Lea Friday Sep. 13
         Warriors (1-1) Indians (0-2)
History: First game with these teams.
Season Results:
BCS 38 Austin Hill Country 61 Indians 07 Selma River City Believers 24
BCS 34 Sugar Land Logos 30 Indians 19 SM Hill Country Christian 39

This game has a good chance of being Bracken’s first 45 mercy game this year.

How can The ReSporter be so sure? Take these morsels of information and see if you can come up with another result.

Last season this Indian squad finished with a 2-8 record. In those games played one was Boerne Geneva’s JV squad that won the game 51-6.

SA The Winston 45ed this team last year and one of their victories was against another JV team Austin Veritas.

Bracken 45ed SA The Winston last season giving you an idea of how far the gulf in talent gap might be between these two teams.

Seven of Prairie Lea’s 10 games were mercy games and their record was 1-6 in those games.

Selma River City Believers beat the Indians on opening night this year and that squad last season had a 1-7 record and have not struck fear in many opponents in their history.

How about this line taken from Texas Football Magazine, Prairie Lea has not had a winning season since they returned to playing football back in 2002.

This Indian squad has the longest drought of not making the playoffs dating back to 1944.

Prairie Lea has five returning starters with two on the offensive side and three on defense.

Not a lot of depth and that certainly can play against a team having players going both ways.

Bracken has enough depth that those rested players can seem a lot faster as a game gets older.

Look for that same scenario in this game as this Indian squad will want to have a reservation to Hawaii as this game reaches the halfway mark.

Bracken is working on several players in different positions and so this game will help place some players that are vying for playing time.

Bracken has gone their longest stint since their inaugural year 2006 in administering a mercy game.

Four games have been played since BCS hung 46 points on Kerrville OLH last year. The longest steak previous to this one was 2010-11 season when they matched that four game stint 26 games ago. In 2006 BCS won just one game and that was by four points.

Bracken’s first mercy game with a win was their fourth game into the 2007 season against Cedar Creek Covenant, 64-12.

You will see more passing in this game as Bracken needs to find that player that can get a part of the game that needs to improve before the Warriors enter into their big games coming up.

History: La Vernia leads the series 3-2.

CL Hawks 35 Somerset 47 Bears 34 Pt Lavaca Calhoun 54

Canyon Lake lost their second game of the year last week, but there were some very encouraging signs that this Hawk team might have had their light switch turned on based on how well the offense ran the ball.

Of the top 30 rushing games in Hawk history three of the runners in last week’s game made the list.

McGuire Johnson is in 10th place with his 199 yards rushing while Josh DeVries now resides at 25th after gaining 92 yards and Hayden Dubois made the cut at 30th position after 81 yards rushing in that Bulldog game.

Canyon Lake as you can deduce had their best rushing game in their history after running past the game with Sealy two years ago by 17 yards.

La Vernia Bears have also started their year by running the ball and will have several running backs that will get the Hawks attention.

Vince Gill, Colby Skelton, Jevante Anderson and Landon Richter will be active in their backfield.

Skelton is the Quarterback and so that will also give you some trouble by his ability to escape trouble when attempting a pass.

In La Vernia’s opening game, Skelton only completed five out of 19 passes, but of those five receptions the Bears averaged over 25 yards per catch.

So that percentage can be deceiving based on being able to capitalize in large quantities of yards after a catch.

The Hawks will have to continue their clamp down mode after last week’s game with Somerset, when CL was able to hold a prolific passer to 173 yards of passing.

Bad news is in the form of rushing defense where Canyon Lake did not do a good job of stopping the Somerset runners.

That one stat allowed those Bulldogs to run out the clock when the Hawks needed to have a stop in order to finish their comeback quest.

One strength in La Vernia’s arena is defensive back William Doege who had two interceptions in their first game. The good news is that if Canyon Lake can have another good game running then it really does not matter how many passes a player has intercepted based on the number of times the Hawks would throw that rock.

This game will be a good barometer for how your Hawks will proceed for this season. If this offense can keep a good game of running, then that confidence will certainly play to their advantage as this season matures.

Defense will be another barometer for the fans to be watchful for seeing how this team is proceeding.

With a good game on that side of the ball, your Hawks can be a confident team as district sunrise starts to see the light.

Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

The ReSporter: Coach Fields, how has your week been going?

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “Our kids will play well this week. They have made tremendous strides and we just need to stay away from injuries.”

“We were 45 point favorites on our opening night’s game that we lost and so we are not taking any opponent lightly.”

The ReSporter: What type of offense and defense does Prairie Lea play?

Coach Fields: “They will play a 2/3 defense and a base/spread offense or J-Bird.”

The ReSporter: I can see that The ReSporter might have done more bad with that question than good.

Let’s try again, what are you hoping to do in this week’s game?

Bracken Doesn’t Need Instant Replay in Win over Logos, 34-30

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

After further review…6-Man Football should start a petition of having plays going to replay.

Bracken Christian made that concept a mute point as the win was put on their record when they wore out the Logos Lions, 34-30 last Friday night in the Garden of Eden. (Houston)

“I have said all week that we wanted to play better and we did not fold it up and responded,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said.

Back to the ‘instant replay’ saga.

Hawks Are Reborn in Loss to Somerset, 47-35

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

Canyon Lake had an opposite word game. What happened last week was just the opposite in this game with Somerset.

There is an old adage that a team will improve the most between the first and second game and the Hawks had already scored more points than the Blanco game on their first drive.

“We had a good offensive line tonight,” Head Coach Charles Drum started. “Our offense was totally different than the way we played last week. I’m proud of our offensive line.”

McGuire Johnson was the workhorse on this night as he rumbled for two touchdowns in the first half and helped Canyon Lake regain a lead going into a delay of game stoppage as thunderstorms and lightning threatened the area.
