The ReSporter would like to finish this year’s sports campaign by
Senior Missy Romero
recognizing three Seniors that were covered by this website.
Last Thursday night, Canyon Lake Coaches announced their winners at a Banquet for the Track, Baseball, Golf, and Softball teams during the spring awards night.
Missy Romero, Matt Magness, and Zach Henshaw were the three students recognized by their Coaches as Seniors that were the outstanding athlete for this academic year.
Missy Romero literally kept the Softball program in the circle the past four years.
Softball was one of the last team sports to make the playoffs last season, when they not only qualified for the playoffs, but was the first team to ever finish second in District competition.
Romero has set the standard for CL Softball for years to come, as she signed on with Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi before the season was in full gear.

The Seniors that just graduated from Bracken Christian scored 1727 points in their four year career as Warriors. That is .496% of the total points by every other player to ever put a royal blue uniform on.
Reflect now on the job at hand for this year’s football team and what type of pressure they will be under to try and continue this status quo. Is it possible?
That is what the Coaches have been trying to find out for the past two weeks during spring practice.
Let’s start at the top. Eli Achilles will be very pivotal for the Warriors this season. This will be his fourth year taking snaps for BCS.
Achilles has a pretty solid record, 35-4 and he has grown (literally) since that first year as a freshman.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call 885-1744 Coach Monzingo
From the Comal Independent School District web site.
Head Coach Matt Monzingo
“Matt Monzingo has been named the new Comal ISD Athletic Director effective at the end of May. Monzingo takes over for Jim Rodrigue, who passed away after a short illness in April. Monzingo has been the head football coach and athletic coordinator at Canyon Lake High School since it opened in 2007 and previously held the same position at Pflugerville Connally High School from 1996-2007.”
Canyon Lake Head Coach Matt Monzingo will be stepping down after 31 years of walking the sidelines.
“I told the football team yesterday,” Coach Monzingo said. “I have left three high school jobs and this one was a very….very tough thing to do.”
Coach Monzingo brought Canyon Lake up in a very….very quick manner. The Hawks won after just their second year and had a winning record and into the playoffs.
The Bracken Christian Warriors started the process of replacing seven players who lost their playing eligibility will result in many new faces in the trenches for the next season starting fall practice in 11 weeks.

Senior Grady Achilles has his next ‘Rung’ in his ladder complete when he signed an
Athletic Scholarship with Incarnate Word.
The ReSporter would like to share the numbers this young man accomplished in his four years of playing football for Bracken.
The Seniors that graduate with Achilles had a 44-6 record with three of those six losses as a result of losing in the playoffs.
Let’s take the 2010 season and put Grady’s yardage in perspective.
For the 2010 Year: Grady Achilles scored 62 Rushing Touchdowns and averaged 29.3 yards per TD.
Fourteen of those touchdowns were from 50 yards or longer runs. Grady rushed for 1817 yards on those 62 scores.
Now you can understand how valuable this young athlete was for Bracken Christian.

You might have heard of these two players that signed
last Friday at Canyon Lake High School.Alex Kemp and Zach Henshaw took another step for their opportunity to play in College.
Kemp was courted by Mary Hardin Baylor while Henshaw will be up the road at Tarleton State University.
To put these two students in perspective lets run some numbers, just in case you forgot who these two young man were. (The season did end over four months ago)
Alex Kemp was the Defensive End for the Hawks where he finished with the All-Time Record for sacks and a basic disrupter for many of the offenses the Hawks faced in the last two years.
Kemp had 126 total tackles the last two seasons and in his Junior year he amassed nine sacks and 15 tackles for a loss.
Not to be out done, Kemp ended with 11 sacks and 18 tackles for loss his Senior campaign. The two totals are now records left for all the under classman to try and top.
The next closest active player in sacks is Isaac Pruna with four. The record holder going into last season was J. Garrett Groom with 10 sacks.
Pruna will have his work cut out for him in the tackles for loss category as he is also the active returning player with eight tackles for a loss. Needing a mere 25 more to tie Kemp’s record of 33.
Zach Henshaw was a record machine that had an extra jump on any player trying to catch him in yardage gained since he played three seasons for the Hawks.
Henshaw had 300 yards rushing in one game, 2070 yards in one year, and 4329 yards in his career.
