                       GO HAWKS!!

Canyon Lake clinched a playoff berth with their, 10-5 road win over Navarro last Tuesday.

The Lake used the binary scoring system (using #’s 2 & 1) during those first 4 innings starting with 2 runs then 1 run during those 4 frames. When that math was done, The Lake enjoyed a, 6-1 advantage.

Navarro did not give up holding CLake without a run in the 5th inning and scored their second run drawing within 4 runs with two innings remaining.

The Hawks put across another run but these Panthers responded with a 3-run homer and now going to the final inning needing 2 runs for a tie.

That was when the insurance salesman got involved for Canyon Lake by scoring 3 runs for a needed term policy with a 5 run lead.

                     Let’s Go Lake!

It was a three up and three down for these Panthers to end the game.

Canyon Lake started with Rianna Gonzales getting her 5th win in the circle this season. Aubrey Long finished the game that finished with both Ladies giving up just one earned run a piece.

Liza Shexnayder used her lead-off spot in the lineup getting on base 5 of her 6 at bats which was productive with a 2-run double that helped increase Hawk’s lead to, 6-1 which would be the winning hit.

The Lake is down to their final 3 games at the Hawk Nest starting with Davenport this Friday. The Hawks have officially clinched since a Navarro 3-0 finish would still leave a tie with CLake but a 2-0 record against Panthers would break that tie in favor of The Hawks!

Still a lot of games to shore-up some defensive shortcomings but a playoff goal has been reached and time to up the next goal for this team.

Canyon Lake’s last play-off was the 2021 season when this group of seniors were in 8th graders and a Bi-District crown would match that 2018 Hawk squad who bowed out in their Area round.

Way to GO Hawks!!

HAWKS 2025 TRACK & FIELD 26-4A DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

HAWKS 2025 TRACK & FIELD 26-4A DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

Track is a fun sport that has one item that is hard to gauge…what is a team’s score as each event unfolds. Well The ReSporter would like to rectify that with a tale of the tape as this last day of District 26-4A transpired. This meet had a lot of drama that had a 3 team race after Field Event day would become a two team fight when CL reached a 10 point deficit after the 100 meter dash that had 3 Lady Hawks who scored in that race. Follow below to see how CLake made this a Hawk Championship.

Enjoy: (*) The point total for previous day is how team started when 4×100 relay began festivities.

Way to Stay in Shape Hawks!

Canyon Lake made up a 15 point deficit and took their first lead when Shana Cutrer and Ayren Lightfoot finished 5th & 6th in the 200 meter dash. Yes those two finishes might not have been what those two young ladies were wanting but those points are what pushed Canyon Lake to their first District Championship and first district championship for the school when Baseball won during the 2021 season.

An interesting note for CL’s final 4×400 relay event the Foursome was not the usual team and this group finished 5th which guaranteed the win.

“We decided to put in the future of Canyon Lake track with 3 freshmen and 1 junior pushing herself to get to that anchor spot,” Head Coach Sami Theurer recounts. “Our 4×400 relay did not qualify but did earn us the points to get past Fred and win our first ever district championship. We are excited to keep moving forward. Let’s Go HAWKS!!!”

Those 4 Ladies garnered 8 points which had Macie Paredez who was brought up from Junior Varsity (to run distance events) just for instances such as what was needed for this situation. Mia Zabarcencu, Embry Walker, and Kennedy Grindle who ended up scoring 21 meet points. Those other 3 Hawks each finished with 2 points each which proved to be enough for this Hawk Championship.

The future will be shining bright with a lot of talent from CL’s Junior Varsity ready to take the reins for more points next season. Emma Risien (High Jump) and Tessa Jones (100 Hurdles) each won their event for Junior Varsity.

The Lake will be taking these following athletes to Area Meet next week across the  ‘Devil’s Backbone’  on Thursday April 10th.

That is far and away a new record in itself coming from every age bracket and some of those entries were achieved as an athlete was competing for the Junior Varsity.

One event (Pole Vault) had Shana Cutrer, Katelyn Lowth, and Kennedy Grindle that scored points each week and yesterday Freshman Grindle won this event with her pr of 10-6. With Lowth and Cutrer scoring that gave The Hawks, 15 points for this event.

Eva Zabarcencu won the 3200 meter run beating her previous best by over 11 seconds with a finish of 11:46.09.

Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

Savanna Oberholtzer finished 1st in her long jump event and on the Junior Varsity Emma Risien came in first in the High Jump and was followed by Trinity Turner who pr’ed her jump finishing in 3rd place.

Hawk’s Imagined Topsy-Turvy Win over Jaguars, 5-1

Thursday, March 27th, 2025

Savanna Oberholtzer and her Topsy-Turvy throw-ins keep teams discombobulated. Head over Heels Love the Lake!

          GO TOPSY-TURVY HAWKS!!

Canyon Lake’s Girls Soccer turned Floresville upside down in a, 5-1 win and will now prepare for London Pirates (22-4 & 16-0 District) in a Regional Semifinals battle.

The Lake’s next opponent is London and that contest will be this Friday at Poteet High School starting at 7:30pm.

CL’s Topsy Turvey contest in this Area Round once again started with a one goal deficit when the Jaguars took a lead at the 28:15 mark left in the first half.

That first 30 minutes of play was not what the doctor ordered for a Hawk team that was finding it hard to get an attack offensively as Floresville was the aggressor of the two with most of those 30 minutes being played with Canyon Lake defending against a resilient Jaguar team.

The Lake would turn it around when Abby Lowth scored on a topsy-turvy header tying this game, 1-1 with 8:52 before halftime.

                     Go Canyon Lake!

Three minutes later Bella Biasatti scored for what would turn out to be the game winner, 2-1.

“Coach (Kara Stracener), during halftime told us that we were better than this,” Avery Norris recalled. “She (Coach) had us close our eyes and imagine us locking in and we got better.”

That 2nd half would be all Canyon Lake switching with Floresville now not being able to get any traction against a Hawk offense that pitched a tent at the Jaguar’s net with a constant barrage of shots on goal.

Topsy Turvy definition: Utter confusion or disorder. With the top or head downward: upside down….
What was down was now up for The Lake and opposite for Floresville and the remainder of this contest.

              Way to Go Lake!!

To start the 2nd half and 11 minutes in had Oberholtzer’s only goal right in front of the net with a pass to herself on the opposite side and a Hawk 2 goal lead, 3-1.

Within that 11 minute span to the final score that had a Norris goal one minute later and then another final topsy-turvy score with 18:37 remaining.

Oberholtzer’s somersault throw-ins led to scores that had Floresville seeing double with no plan of attack.

Now the next rung up the ladder has CL playing a London team that has a stout resume.

However this battle does show a chance for your Lake team with a common opponent being Wimberley who beat the Pirates early this season 4-0.

With the 4 London losses their opponents have a very respectable .718 winning percentage. (65-24-5)

The Lake’s 6 losses to schools that presently have a, 101-22-10 combined record for a .797 winning percentage.

Canyon Lake has an, 0-3 record in their previous Regional Semifinals games and wanting a chance to go another round.

Coach Stracener might want to have these Ladies closing their eyes on the bus imagining another gold ball. With a little topsy-turvy play thrown in for good measure.

Let’s Go Hawks!

               Let’s GO HAWKS!!

Canyon Lake got back on track after evening their record beating Navarro, 10-3 last Friday.

Cheyenne Fields’ had a 3-run homer upping CL’s score to, 7-2 while with the help from Kelsey Unrue getting 3 rbi’s with her double and a, 4-0 Hawk lead during the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Navarro had crept back to a one run deficit, 3-2 before a 5 run answer for The Lake and eventual 10-3 win.

Pitcher Rianna Gonzales had a steller evenmin giving up one earned run while striking out 11 Panthers.

The Lake showed power accumulating 3 doubles and that Fields’ homer.

Hit Man says get rid of Pests Hawks!

This coming week, Canyon Lake will have two tough outings on the road with Davenport and Fredericksburg.

Breaking even would be considered a good week and a sweep would jump start a chance for finishing on the upper crust of District 26-4A Standings.

Be Authentic with your Hawk Gear & LET’s GO LAKE!

Anthony Hockman and Landon Brown competing on the Junior Varsity places in a tie for 9th place for the High Jump hitting 5-10.00.

One more Hawk has reach Top Ten status when Tristan Alexander stands in 6th place with a 100 meter dash mark of 11.18 this season.

For the Hawk Ladies who have won two meets this year finished 2nd in the Viking Relays a scant 4 points from taking another 1st Place finish.

To take that one step further would be to ask Head Girls Track Coach Sami Theurer to enter Ayren Lightfoot in the 400 meter dash and that would have put The Lake in first place.

That’s why the rest of this article is a quick interview with Coach Theurer on those type of questions.

===================

                        Let’s GO LAKE!

The ReSporter: Some athletes were scheduled to compete and did not….what goes into those type of decisions?

Coach Theurer: “We are a little thin this year and a lot of our girls are doing multiple events or just coming from another sport/game. We are trying to make sure they are healthy for district so that we compete at our highest level.”

The ReSporter: You had the team competing against some different faces…How does that help in their development?

Coach Theurer: “I have made it a priority this season to see some different schools and let our girls compete against a variety of runners. We don’t need to run against the same runners every week.”

The ReSporter: Hannah Hammer improved her PR for the 1600 by right at 8-9 seconds and for those younger ladies you had Macie Paredez PR by 12-13 seconds in that same event.

Way to Stay in Shape Hawks!

Coach Theurer: “Both of these young ladies are working hard and pushing themselves at every practice and meet. They are super excited to show up at district.”

The ReSporter: Overall thoughts?

Coach Theurer: “Just trying to do our best to get ready to compete at our “tough” district meet. We have a team of girls that care and want to do well. I know that they are putting in the work to win.”

The ReSporter: How do you approach this open week?

Coach Theurer: “Take this week as an opportunity to focus on our physical and mental state in our running game. Use this week to recover, work and power up. Healthy, hydrated and strong has to be our long game if we want to get out of district. Let’s Go HAWKS!!!!

============================

Wayen Slania-Wertz had 2 doubles & homerun in a Hawk win this week.

Canyon Lake started playing against varsity competition during the 2007-08 year and for that Hawk Baseball team they played very few games.

However, that short season did produce for CLake a record that had stood for 17 years. The Lake outscored San Marcos Academy by 24 runs in a shut-out victory. Well, that minute record is now in the past (pardon the pun) when the Hawks scored 27 runs in a win over Gonzales, 27-4. That 2008 season still has a record winning by 24 runs but the amount of runs now belongs to this year’s squad.

This Spring Break week had 4 consecutive contests starting Monday through Friday’s win as Coach Escamilla said, “I would rather play games than practice.”

CLHS will go into district play this Tuesday at Wimberley with an, 13-4-1 record. Baseball has 3 elements that compose, hitting (offense), fielding (defense), and pitching.

Canyon Lake has done well in two of those 3 elements except for their fielding which showed up in this win by producing 3 errors. To put that in perspective, CL has given up 51 runs and bout half (25 runs) has been earned. The rest came as a result of errors which certainly will play a much more pivotal aspect of wins and losses when competing against district brethren.

                    Let’s Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake scored double digit in 3 of the 4 games this week with that one loss to state ranked New Braunfels where 2 runs came across the plate for the Hawks.

Looking at this year’s district opponents on the Standings graph above will show every school with a winning record and that magnifying glass being a tad closer in hopes of having a chance for a post-season season.

Last year, The Lake broke their, no-go to playoff streak, that your Hawks had crafted for 3 seasons during the year after the Wuhan Covid outbreak came right before district and wasting an awesome, 12-2 record collecting cobwebs. (2021-2023 seasons)

                              Go Lake!

This year, district contests will have 2 games for each school which had been 3 games per school. Another change for the better will have those two games during the same week instead of doing a more traditional round-robin schedule.

In this win over Gonzales, Canyon Lake had 19 hits and 11 of those went extra bases. Carter Williams had two homers a double for 8 rbi and Wayen Slania-Werts had two doubles and a homerun.

In the one run loss to New Braunfels, Williams was on the mound and struck-out 13 Unicorns and gave up 5 hits. The Lake was close to pulling an upset except for those little things that were presented but not being able to increase a lead. It was errors that also contributed to this outcome. Hence, in facing district games for the rest of this season needing to be held to a minimum.

It was a good week of ‘Practice’ and now it will be time to perform with a new purpose that eluded this team last year.

Soccer: The Lake Swamped the Gators in, 6-1 Bi-District Win

Saturday, March 22nd, 2025

Way to Make us Proud Hawks!!

Canyon Lake spotted the Gateway Gators an early one goal lead a mere 47 seconds into this Bi-District contest but would make up for that in spades by scoring the next unanswered 6 goals and ended with a date against Floresville next Tuesday at Lehman High School.

“Everyone in our district is more physical than Gateway,” Head Coach Kara Stracener said. “They were calm and possessed the ball well and we were able to win a lot of those 50-50 balls.”

Coach Stracener continued, “We always have a game plan…We did okay but it was not our best game… but it was good to get a win not playing our best game.”

Savanna Oberholtzer scored one of her 5 goals during this contest 12 minutes later and then again it took one minute for another goal for a lead that would not be threatened for the rest of this battle.

                    Way to Go Hawks!!

Basically a, ’See You Later Alligator’ scenario as CLake will now start preparations for their Area round after Floresville Jaguars who beat Luling, 2-2 on a penalty shootout.

The Gators came into this game averaging a little over 6 goals per contest and was riding high without a loss in their last 12 games which had one tie to their district champion, Burnet, 5-5. These Bulldogs beat Fredericksburg, 5-4 in their playoff battle in that large school bracket.

Goalie Callie Dominguez had 7 saves with her best coming at the 22:46 mark of the 2nd half while The Lake was enjoying a, 4-1 advantage.

Team Lake showing off their Bi-District Trophy!  GO LAKE!

Oberholtzer scored 3 goals in that first half and then continued her flash points two more times in the 2nd half at the 28 and 6 minute mark.

The finishing touches was when Abby Lowth scored with a header off a corner kick from Oberholtzer with 18 seconds remaining.

Bella Biasatti had CL’s other assist in this Gator Feast.

Great defense continued after that first minute hic-up with the midfield defenders keeping these Gators in the water where The Lake had the advantage.

Sofia Balderas was awarded the defensive player of this win by her coaches after this game.

Oberholtzer’s speed kept Gateway without a lock as they could not find a way to keep the Hawk’s from threatening for more goals…the Gators defenders could only turn their head to see where Oberholtzer would be dribbling next before her eventual, ‘back of the net’, score.

Congrats Hawks and next up will be the Jaguars and next victim.

Go Hawks!

Hawk’s JV Green Outscored Comfort for 9th Win, 8-6

Friday, March 21st, 2025

Brenan Hughes tripled in the winning run in Hawks win over Comfort, 8-6. Way to Go Lake!

Canyon Lake’s Green answered a Comfort 2 run first inning with a 3 spot the bottom of that same frame for a back and forth affair that had these Visitors tying the score in the top of the 2nd and 4th innings before a Hawk final 2 runs for a time ending win, 8-6.

CJ Rodriguez had a strike-out pitch and (finished with 8) but the flip side showed 5 walks and one hit batter allowing Comfort to put enough players on base to score runs and keep this game close.

Max Ross and Tate Heckman started the bottom of the first with walks before a Brenan Hughes single drew first blood that jettisoned a one run lead and then a Hughes score on a wild pitch giving The Lake a, 3-2 lead.

Comfort would not make this game comfortable tho when they scored a tying run in that 2nd frame without a hit. This menu had two walks a hit batter followed by an error for that score.

The Lake would grab the lead back when Cade Johnson singled and advanced to second on an error. Two passed balls later the Hawks had their lead back.

Be Authentic with your Hawk Gear & LET’s GO LAKE!

Pitcher Rodriguez got his groove back in that 3rd inning by striking out the side with 11 pitches (9 for strikes) for a quick…good morning—good afternoon—and goodnight for these Bobcat hitters.

Canyon Lake worked two more runs on their at bat when Catcher Greysen Patton had a one pitch hit (his second hit this game) and scored when Rodriguez singled two batters later.

Dalton Hodges followed by taking one for the team (hbp)…then Cade Johnson single produced two insurance runs.

Way to Stay in Shape Hawks!

CLHS would use those insurance runs for a win the next inning after these Visitors tied the game again scoring 3 runs helped by 3 Hawk errors while sending 9 batters to the plate.

CLake used 3 pitchers to help put out the fire when Reliever Jace McGoldrick, with the bases loaded, struck out that final Bobcat on four pitches.

Canyon Lake would put their finishing touches on this contest when Rowan Edwards drew a walk to start the final inning which was followed by a scorcher triple off the bat of Hughes for what would eventually be the winning run.

The Hawks would score again before the game was called due to time constraints.

It was the 9th win this season as those upcoming games will feature district battles now for a team with high expectations.

Hit Man says way to get rid of those Pests Hawks!

Canyon Lake got back on a winning streak now at two games this week and will enjoy their Spring Break with 4 consecutive day games starting on the road at SA Cole~~Home Comfort~~Road New Braunfels~~Home Gonzales.

A Unicorn match-up will be a telling game based on making the playoffs and as teams progresses,  games become harder. That would put this contest for an idea of how your Hawks might fair against a NB team that has an 11-2 season record and is 2-1 in district outings thus far.

The Lake beat a 6-3 team last Friday scoring in all but one inning while amassing 12 hits beating Crystal City, 12-5.

Ryder Hopper ran his record to 4-0 with this win allowing 2 hits and one unearned run in his 4 innings of work.

                         Go Hawks!

Hayes Holladay pitched the final 3 innings for a save with 2 unearned runs coming across the plate.

Those unearned runs will be one of the major needs to improve as those mistakes could cost a district victory.

Canyon Lake blew this game wide open in their final at bat scoring 4 runs on 3 hits. Ryan Rena had the big hit with a double that was followed by an rbi single off the bat for Gavin Baldera.

Three hits for Bryce May and Michael Anderson and all the players who made an appearance reached base during this outing.

                      Let’s Go Lake!

CL’s district has all these schools with a better than .500 record with perennial power Navarro at the top of the list with just one loss along with their 10 wins.

Davenport has played the toughest schedule and should be a major hurdle this year as well as always tough Wimberley.

Fredericksburg is standing in with a stellar, 12-3 record and will coming into district play loaded with a lot of confidence.

Bandera proved last year they could get a district win which happened against Canyon Lake which tells you that taking a day off for any team will not be a recipe for garnering a conquest.

“I think we are set for our first district game for Tuesday,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “We have to have a line-up for our Friday district ball game…We have to get some action and have someone step up on the mound who wants to become our number two and once we find that person then we will fill in those defensive spots behind him.”

Coach Escamilla continued talking bout CL’s defense and hitting part of the game, “On the fielding part, we have to do a better job and on the hitting part… we are not adjusting to the off speed pitches and we’re trying to yank it and we know better than and we need to learn to go the other way and once we start hitting the right-center gap then we are doing good.”

Four games in four days will play like a tournament week without playing back to back contests.

This week will have a lot riding on the progress as a road game against Wimberley will be here soon and an, all hands on deck,  with players assigned being ready for having a productive district results.

Make it Work Hawks!!
