Mountain Valley Middle School was busy in Wimberley last Friday as their District Track Meet had all hands on deck for this event.

“We are really proud of how all of our kids competed at the district meet,” Athletic Coordinator Brandon Pawelek said. “They worked hard all season and we had quite a few personal records throughout our boys and girls teams……We had school records set by Nic Rivera in both 110 and 300 meter hurdles, as well as, Devon Cordell in the discus as well as both 7th and 8th grade girls 4×100 meter relay teams.”

The Hawks had several athletes that excelled on Friday with Rivera topping all MVMS students scoring 28 points after combining all events Rivera was entered.

Those boys hurdles will be busy next year for Canyon Lake as that is presently the best part of the Hawks high school team headlined by Brandon Courtney.

Well, Rivera served notice that he is ready to make his mark after setting MVMS bests in those events with two 1st place finishes.

Canyon Lake Softball got their first district win over the first place, Wimberley Texans, 4-1 on Senior Night at the Hawk Nest.

Yes, it was a long time in coming as the Hawks proved that they were not as bad as their record indicated.

“We played so well,” Head Coach John Gallagher said relieved. “We talked about what we needed to do in pre-game and they came out focused and came out and did well.”

This win had all three of the basics working on this night as the fielding, pitching and hitting combined for this long in coming victory.

Kirsten Jones went out in style in raising her batting average to .493 and a Hawk record (so far) .598 on base percentage.

Not to mention 2 more stolen bases giving her 27 for the season which would rank only behind the batter Jones bats behind, Carley Dubois.

Canyon Lake JV Baseball won their tied game against Blanco on Thursday at the Hawk Nest, 9-9.

Earlier this season, Canyon Lake played Blanco and let’s just say that The ReSporter decided not to have an article on the massacre.

It was not a pretty game and in situations like that, it is better to leave the written word in the can.

Over a month later, another game was scheduled and The ReSporter wanted to see if there had been any improvement during this season.

Baseball and Softball get Gobbled up by the Cuero Gobblers as both games failed to reach the 7th inning.

This is a tough year for bats and balls as Baseball has won 2 games and this year’s Softball team is presently on a 10 game losing streak.

For the Hawk Baseball team you have youth out the wazoo as CL lost several Seniors last season and just were not loaded enough to keep that train on it’s track.

“We played ok, just could not get anything going offensively,” Head Baseball Coach Trent Dunavant stated. “We put the ball in play, just could not square anything up…so give them credit for getting the job done offensively.”

Canyon Lake’s Baseball has gone two games without a run as finding the right combination for batting is a hit and miss. (pardon the pun)

Gavin Dietrich took the loss as Cuero continues fighting for one of those precious play-off spots.

Hawks Can’t Dig Out of Hole in Loss to Navarro, 17-13

Canyon Lake’s Softball team showed signs of life but the Hawks still could not dig out of their hole in loss to Navarro, 17-13.

“We put ourselves in a hole,” Head Coach John Gallagher stated. “We fought back and this team never gives up and I am really proud of what the team did….we started tagging the ball pretty well.”

That last comment from Coach Gallagher will give you an indication of the slump this team has been in since district play started over a month ago.

The 13 runs was more than adding up the previous 8 games and getting into double digit hits has not been seen since their last win in Johnson City against Copperas Cove.

But, when you put the team to the test with the Big 3 that needs to be humming (pitching/hitting/fielding), then you can see by the 17 runs given up that pitching was not on as well as still committing way to many errors.

That hole that was dug had the Panthers with a 12-1 lead going into the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Hawks Finish District 26-4A with One Championship

Hawk 4×400 relay breaks CL Record with 4:07.85 time Bailey Drum, Skylar Hurst, Emma Gray, Sophia Thorpe

Canyon Lake’s next stop will be Liberty Hill in two weeks for the Area Meet to qualify for Region Meet in Kingsville.

The top 4 in each event got their ticket punched for this chance and the Hawks had several athletes who had personal best finishes which might be an indication that the record breaking might not be finished.

CL’s Boys and Girls both finished in 4th place in their district meet held in Cuero this past Wednesday and Thursday.

Hurdles was the strength of both Boys and Girls as Bailey Drum and Brandon Courtney both lowered their best times in this meet.

Drum had a 36 point meet scoring in all 5 events she entered. that included 3 first place finishes while qualifying for the Area Meet in 4 of those 5 events.

Canyon Lake had points every time Drum walked out to compete, as this future Angelo State Volleyball player proved she can handle track & field too.

With Drum’s 36 points, she passed 200 points for the year and now resides with 213 tallies and more meets ahead for this tireless athlete.

“After all of this, I don’t have a lot of energy left,” Drum noted after her final event. “I honestly did not think I was running that fast and I just attacked every hurdle.”

That last comment was in response to lowering her best 300 meter hurdle race by over 2 seconds.

CL Hawks Need Wins after losing 1 Run Game to Yoakum, 6-5

Monday, April 4th, 2016

Unknown

Canyon Lake is now the time for desperation as another one run loss has the Hawks looking at a situation where some help will be needed and wins have to start tomorrow.

“We are playing not to lose instead of playing for a win,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We worked hard and our effort was there.”

CL still has a mathematical shot for the playoffs but like someone with cataracts they don’t need to be driving while it is dark outside.

Errors were the culprit again as one of those dastardly mistakes led to 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning and an eventual loss.

Alexis Robinson had just 3 walks but those were all bunched up during the same inning while the Hawks decided to have 2 errors that same inning giving the Bulldogs 4 runs without a hit.

“I had a good feeling about that 6 run inning,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant stated clairvoyantly. “I just felt something as we have been getting better every game and in every practice. The game is starting to slow down for them.”

The Yoakum Bulldogs were already chewing on their bone with a 6-2 lead after the first 3 innings but that was when the Hawks would swoop in for a steal, taking that bone from the Dogs.

CL used a 9 unanswered runs during those middle innings as Avery Montgomery settled in, on the pitching mound, while the Hawks manufactured 8 consecutive batters to reach base safely and resulting in 6 runs.

This inning had one play that would give the Hawks a ton of confidence and it came as a missed suicided squeeze play that had Cade Dunavant in a pickle being almost home and survival mode.

Flying High Go HAWKS

Canyon Lake Golf team are in the middle of the pack going into their final round next Monday in Floresville Golf Course.

A lot of youth that can make a statement next year as after the first day of competition, Canyon Lake would need some great scores on their second round while other schools falling apart.

“We played well and are getting a lot better,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman surmised. “Both of our groups have great shots at advancing next year.”

Senior Haden Lee scores points running/throwing/jumping

Senior Haden Lee scores points by running, throwing, and jumping.

Canyon Lake Varsity Boys and Girls both were wimmers last Thursday after traveling across the Devil’s Backbone to Wimberley and the Texan Relays.

The Hawks are poised to have their best Track Season as they embark on District 26-4A next week in Cuero.

CL will travel to Dripping Springs tomorrow to get a final idea of how they will go into the fires and bring home two championships next week.

This meet had Navarro and Wimberley in attendance and winning became more of a moral boost.

Navarro Boy’s have had the best 4×400 meter relay team this year and that last race had the Hawks Flying over the Panthers to take first place while the Girls had a 3 second improvement on their 4×400 meter relay event giving them a second place finish.
