Hawks Play at Navarro this Tuesday

GO HAWKS!!

GO HAWKS!!

Canyon Lake will be traveling to Navarro this Tuesday as the district schedule is getting started during the first round of games.

The Hawk Ladies will have a tough game as they lost their first district game last Saturday against Gonzales.

The Lady Panthers are undefeated in district so far sporting a 3-0 record with a 16-7 season.

This will be a tough game to turn the table for Canyon Lake as they have been suffering on the offensive side of the court in points as that has become a precious commodity during the past few games.

CL had several players that were not available for their tournament and last week’s game with Gonzales.

That alone should make Canyon Lake more competitive for Tuesday’s contest.

Canyon Lake started their season in grand style as they walloped Gonzales, 70-32 on their first District 26-4A game.

“We did exactly what we needed to do and played well,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said with a smile. “We did a good job of looking like we were playing during the first of this season.”

The Hawks had 3 players breaking double digit scoring as Rory Preiss finished with a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

“We went out and did what we needed to do and played hard and did not sink to their level of play,” Preiss pressed.

Guard Ryner Martin scored 18 points on 6 3point shots

CLJV started their game with Boerne in a hole as the Greyhounds literally scored 14 of the first 17 points in the contest.

But that is when the Hawks would finally open the lid off their goal and got their offense in gear.

In the last 2 minutes of the first quarter, Canyon Lake would unleash four 3 pointers to take the lead after the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, 16-15.

That show was from the shot of Ryner Martin and Bennie Brownlee to end that stanza.

These two sharp shooters finished with 18 and 11 points respectfully.

Ryner made three 3pointers and Brownlee topped that with a 4 point play on his made 3point goal.

Canyon Lake held Pleasanton to 20 points below their season average in their win Tuesday night on the road, 55-38.

The Hawk’s shooting percentage was not good but that part of the game was overcome on the offensive glass as CL finished with 16 offensive rebounds.

A slow start in scoring 17 points in that first half had Canyon Lake looking at a 6 point deficit coming out of their locker for the second round of play, 17-23.

“We forced them into 33 turnovers,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We picked up our defensive pressure, which caused them to make mistakes and take poor shots….I was very pleased with our defensive intensity and our guards did a great job of pressuring the ball.”

Canyon Lake was also having a turnover epidemic in that first half as they committed 16 contributing to their slow start.

Canyon Lake finished their first day of tournament play at the Canyon Lake Classic Tournament on Friday evening beating Lockhart and losing to Blanco.

The Hawks lost to Blanco in overtime as CL was down 15 points in the 3rd Quarter, 51-36 at the 4:03 mark.

Canyon Lake then outscored Blanco with great defense and timely offense by finishing that last part of the quarter outscoring the Panthers 10-0.

The Hawks then started the 4th Quarter outscoring Blanco 11-2 which would give CL their largest lead, 59-53 but the game would end with both teams more than a 2 point advantage until the final horn.

In the Lockhart game, the Hawks, rushed out to a 15-2 start and used that advantage for the remainder of the game.

CL Hawks were able to finish 2nd Place in Marion’s Basketball Tournament this past weekend.

Canyon Lake beat Marion Bulldogs in getting to the Championship game with Wimberley, 52-41.

“From beginning to ending, this was our best night as you could see it with our energy and effort,” Head Basketball Coach Luke Chapman said. “That was one of our best offensive output as the ‘Bigs’ did a good job and all the guys are starting to trust each other.”

It is common practice for schools that host tournaments will always be sure to place teams they will be able to beat on their side of the bracket.

Marion looked at the teams and placed CL on their bracket for this weekend as the Hawks made them pay for that calculation.

The first quarter was tight but Canyon Lake got their separation in those two middle quarters by outscoring the Bulldogs, 26-11 and catapulting the Hawks for their 52-41 win.

Canyon Lake Girls finished their Tournament in New Braunfels Canyon High School with a 2-3 record.

The losses were to Smithson Valley, Roosevelt, and Bridge City as SV and Roosevelt reside in the 6A classification.

In that Bridge City game, both teams had their defense going strong as the gym was cold with the frigid shooting percentages.

The Hawks shot 24% from the floor in that game as CL found it hard to get any momentum going.

As bad as CL’s shooting got, the Hawks found themselves just down, 20-18 going into the final stanza of this contest.

Canyon Lake won their first home game over Bandera on Tuesday night, 49-32.

“It was nice to get a win on our first home game,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We had great fan support and the atmosphere was fun and exciting…we played well as a team and had a good solid defensive effort.”

The Hawks had two players reach double figures in scoring, as Sarah Russell chipped in 11 points while Emma Gray had a 21 point game coupled with 16 rebounds.

Gray did everything but shoot a 3 pointer in this win as she also had a team high 8 assists and 2 blocks.

Those 8 assists would usually be a team total or more on many nights as Gray dominated the inside with her play on both ends of the floor.

Hawk Boy’s Catch Fire & Beat Somerset, 65-60

Canyon Lake was on fire in the second half scoring 44 points and overcoming a 13 point halftime deficit in beating Somerset, 65-60.

“They got into a half-court trap that led to some mistakes and turnovers from us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “That led to easy layups for them. We just got rattled a little bit and they went on a run.”

In the past, that type of half would mean more of the same and a bad loss as a result.

“I told the guys at half that if we take care of the ball, then we will be fine,” Coach Chapman recalled. “We had 12 turnovers in the first half and only 3 in the second half.”

That was the turning point as the Hawks have proved in past games that it is hard to score when you are not getting shots off because of mistakes on offense.

Scoring 44 points in the second half would be more than what the Hawks saw in whole games in the past.
