Canyon Lake lost a hard fought Area Round Playoff against Liberty Hill, 2-0 last Thursday at The Hawk Stadium.

Liberty Hill had given up just 18 goals for the season as their defense was the difference in this game as the Panthers came out of the gates firing and going up 1-0 with less than a minute gone in the first half.

Another score five minutes into this game would be more than enough for a win as Canyon Lake threatened on several tries just coming up empty.

The Hawks had Alexa Ramos as their goalie which turned out to be a double edge sword as CL was also giving up one of their more accomplished scorers with the trade off.

A wind that was blowing south to north also caused some missed opportunities as Ramos kicks would clear the whole field allowing the Panthers goalie to retrieve the ball without a Hawk being able to run down the ball and a chance for a goal.

Softball: Hawks Start Too Late in Loss to Yoakum, 7-4

Canyon Lake got started to late in their loss to the Yoakum Bulldogs last Thursday night, 7-4.

The loss still has CL in the hunt for a playoff berth, but now it will get tougher as the Hawks work on having a better finish to get a better seeding.

The Hawks could not scratch a run until the last inning when Senior Kelsey Ahrens cleared the bases with a triple.

Canyon Lake scored once more but the hill was too high to climb as they needed 7 runs to keep the game going.

Middle innings seem to be a weak spot for CL as a 5 run fifth inning was reminiscence of their previous loss to La Vernia.

Errors also kept Yoakum’s innings going and just with 4 hits will tell you Canyon Lake gave up too many walks.

Any way you cut it, their were too many gifts for the hosts and Yoakum finally opened those gifts for a sweep of the season’s series with the Hawks.

Now Canyon Lake will be home this coming Tuesday as they host Gonzales in hopes of getting back on track as the second round of games continue.

Go Hawks!!

There was no drama in Friday night’s game with La Vernia, as Canyon Lake found that a mean Bear is a bad Bear losing, 10-0.

Canyon Lake first five district games had been decided in the last innings but on this night La Vernia decided to knock out the Hawks and in that 5th inning, if something could go wrong, then it did.

The game was controlled by both pitchers as Alexis Robinson was on fire, striking out 8 Bears in her 4 innings of work.

Two out of three batters in each inning was a strike out. It was a dominating time as La Vernia just could not catch up to Robinson’s fast ball.

Canyon Lake is now brushing up on this next couple of weeks as the Hawk Coaches will be mix and matching which events to compete in when District 26-4A Meet comes calling in April.

The Hawks had some athletes not in attendance in Wimberley as they will be competing in Austin for the Texas Relays instead of running in last night’s Meet.

Evan Schuller and Joe Marple were high scorers last night scoring 10.5 and 14 points respectfully. Schuller best was a 2nd place finish in the Triple Jump as he is still right at the doorstep of getting over the 40 foot mark.

Marple got 12 of his points with the hurdle runs and Gerrit Wilkins finished first on his 110 Hurdle Run.

On the Girls side, Bailey Drum was high point scoring 22 points with high finishes in the Triple Jump and Hurdle runs. Mariah Ellis was second getting 19 points for the Hawks.

Canyon Lake will be in Wimberley next Wednesday for a tune up meet before district.

Girls Golf finished final tournament and will be back in the hunt next week for District 26-4A play

Golf was in full swing again this week as both the Girls and Boys played in Burnet last Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Girls team only had three girls playing and did not qualify for a team score.

Sam York, of the three ladies, finished with the best score 109 as Kyndle Smith 128 and Melissa Gaxiola 130 finished for their scores.

CL Boys team also was shy of one golfer but still had enough for a team finish as Skyler Tschoepe finished 2nd shooting a 75 for his round.

 7th Place Finish
 Skyler Tschoepe 75 2nd Medalist

 Sam Sheppard 103
 Jericho Anderson 105

CL Hawks Lose to Wimberley, 6-1

Canyon Lake finished their scoring drought with the 34th inning but that run was still not enough to stop Wimberley, losing 6-1 on Tuesday night.

The Hawks are still trying to find a remedy for their offensive woes as they will hopefully find lightning in a bottle when they face La Vernia this Friday.

“We have tried everything,” Head Baseball Coach Trent Dunavant said. “You can’t reinvent the wheel and we are not playing bad and we had some good pitching….they (Wimberley) did things a little better.”

No errors but Wimberley kept the pressure up and finally broke through from the fifth inning on, scoring 6 runs in those final three innings.

It is the little things that Canyon Lake just cannot get going at right times to help in run production.

“We can’t get a bunt when we need to move a player in a position to score,” Coach Dunavant continued. “This is all mental and not a mechanical thing…everybody (the players) knows what has been going on and they start to press when they go to bat.”

Hawk’s One Act Play Goes 10 Innings in Win over Wimberley

The Hawks pointing to Tiare Kacir after getting the winning hit against Wimberley

The high drama was in action once again at the Hawk Softball Diamond, as Canyon Lake continued their suspenseful season winning in the 10th inning over Wimberley, 6-5.

CL was never in the lead in this game until it counted, the end of the third extra inning.

The bottom of the batting order did most of the damage on this night as Cameron Berger worked a one out walk in the 10th inning.

Berger has a little over 2 percent chance of walking as this free pass was a thing of beauty with that final result a win. It was Berger’s 4th walk in her career and 3rd one for this year in over 150 at bats.

Berger doesn’t like to walk, but would rather run, when she can be that winning score in extra innings.

Lizzy Henderson was next and had 2 hits already in this game but was called upon to sacrifice Berger over to second base which she did like a pro.

Now with Berger on second, it was time for Tiare Kacir to give Canyon Lake another district win with a sharp single (her second hit of the game) between second and first base to drive home the winning run on a 2 strike pitch and send the Texans home.

Canyon Lake’s baseball team name has now been introduced in the definition for, futility, as the Hawks have now been shut-out 4 straight games, 2-0 in Cuero last Friday.

CL has a batting average of .106 during this streak as the Hawk pitchers had another game keeping Canyon Lake close enough for a win as their bats have grown cold.

The two pitchers that started those last two games were the only Hawks to have a hit in this game, Cody Powell with a double.
