MV 8B Hawks Go Hollywood in Win over Boerne, 28-8

Friday, October 31st, 2014

Defense was the name of this game as Boerne had center snap problems that would just exasperate their offensive rhythm and Mountain Valley would certainly take advantage by clamping down on all the Greyhound’s offense advances.

Scoring with no time on the halftime clock when Quarterback Cade Dunavant found receiver Zack (Hollywood) Taliaferro behind Boerne’s defensive backs for a game clinching touchdown from 37 yards out.

“I did a fade route and Cade (Dunavant) had a good pass but it was on the wrong side but I just looked to the corner of the end zone,” Hollywood Taliaferro said as if he was rehearsing for the lead roll.

“That play helped us to keep our momentum,” Dunavant said. “This was our last home game and we wanted this win.”

This win was a sweet victory after answering La Vernia’s five game set in that last contest with the Bears.

A win that showed improvement from a previous game is a sign that Canyon Lake might be ready for their next goal.

Goals are something that has been reached on several venues with this year’s team.

“We were more crisp in our game tonight,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said. “It feels wonderful.”

Bracken Warriors Blow Out Concordia, 69-0

Sunday, October 26th, 2014

BCS had a much needed blow out win over Pflugerville Concordia last Friday night, 69-0.

This win now set outs the last two games of Bracken’s regular season and how they finish will help in what type of team to play in that first round of playoff games.

Concordia is competing in their first year and the Bracken faithful can empathize with how a season that you think will never end.

The Warriors finished with one win that year, but had a little more on their plate as they played many team on their schedule very close in that campaign.

2006 First Year Close Games:
Game Scores Comment
SA Lutheran 48-44 Only win for season, was third game.
Temple Central 42-44 A win here would have evened their season.
Marble Falls Faith 28-37 Good game after being blown out in two previous battles.
CC Annapolis 54-58 Loss by four and most points scored as season finished.

Bracken Christian had just 17 offensive plays and six of those plays were called on the first drive on this night.

Four of those plays were was accomplished by passing the ball as Bracken would had Jeff Camp with the most receiving yardage in Bracken’s history by finishing with 138 for the game.

Mountain Valley’s 8B Team Hang Loss on the Billies, 14-6

That first MV drive was all it would take to get this win as the Hawks drove 67 yards and the eventual win when Nic Robinson scored from four yards out and put a cherry on this TD with a run for the two point conversion.

The next Mountain Valley drive was cut short after reaching the Billies’ 19 yard line and fumbling that chance away.

Fredericksburg’s first three drives would end with punts as the Hawks would score their two touchdowns for a 14-0 lead going into halftime.

Christian Rhoades had a great set of downs on that scoring drive with a nifty 46 yard run and then a nine yard run two plays later for that score.

Fredericksburg can’t Keep Lead in Loss to the Hawks, 49-31

Saturday, October 25th, 2014

Fredericksburg could not keep a lead in loss to Canyon Lake, 49-31.

The Hawks upped their series record to 5-2 over the Billies and this game was not your ordinary, by the book, game as CL administered two kick-off run backs which finally broke Fredericksburg into a free fall and a loss.

“They are good,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We talked about last year’s team and how similar we are…but we will need to finish it.”

On Fredericksburg first drive of the game, the Billies moved from their 40 yard line to CL’s 26 in just three plays when a movement penalty on a first down, had Fredericksburg needing 15 yards for a first.

That little mistake changed up their play calling and after three passes and two incompletions, Jacob Eckhardt was good with a 41 yard field goal with 10:24 left in that first quarter.

Using 13 seconds, Josh DeVries took the Billie kick-off on the press box sideline and with some Houdini like dance moves, DeVries was crossing the goal line and CL would surprise the shocked home crowd, leading 7-3.

This game would have some more runners with a chance of showing off some of their skills as Connor Rose and Landry Moore both averaged over 12 yards per carry and accounted for four touchdowns.

“We had not played much and this was the first game we could show that we were tough enough,” Rose said.

“I wanted to show that I was true asset,” Moore said with the same resolve as Rose earlier.

Mountain Valley scored on seven of their eight times with the ball.

That one time a score was not a result? The Hawks had just two plays as they were running out the first half clock.

Canyon Lake gobbled up the Gobblers from Cuero in Volleyball action, taking this contest in three sets, 25-17, 25-15, and 28-26.

“We started with more energy in this game,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said. “We did not do a pre game last week and we were not mentally ready, but tonight we did a good job and I don’t want them to get comfortable.”

The Hawks have accomplished many milestones this year but the major barrier now is solving the slump that hit this club after the Wimberley loss a couple of weeks ago.

This game with Cuero will help in seeing if CL can get on a run before the ‘Second’ season gets started.

Canyon Lake started the first set with Hannah Wunderlich being the main attraction with two kills to start the action.

Cross Country Shows Improvement for District Meet

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Canyon Lake’s Cross Country team is preparing for their final run to the tape as District 26-4A will commence this Wednesday at Navarro (Starke Park).

Head Cross Country Coach MaryBeth Gallagher

The Hawks have had a lot of improvement this year as in other sports, there are several young athletes ready to take over.

“Well I am excited for our team as they have been working very hard this season to continue improving their times,” Head Cross Country Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “We know it is going to be tough at district and we know that for us to have a shot at any medals we will have to run our best meet.”

Canyon Lake has some accomplished runners but it might be the future that holds the keys for this team.

“We have seen a lot of our younger runners improve and they have been a great addition to the team,” Coach Gallagher said breathlessly.

Hawks Parts Red Sea in Win over Bandera, 37-28

Canyon Lake got back on track as the Hawks evened their district record after beating Bandera, 37-28.

“That kick-off return switched the momentum in the game tonight,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We like to be balanced in every game with our running backs…but we will take our positives and just get better at our tackling for next week.”

It all started after a Bandera touchdown on an interception early in the first quarter.

Matt Adams then fielded the kick and it seemed as if the Red Sea had parted and Adams was the chosen one to take the ball 89 yards to the end zone and help CL take the lead it would not relinquish, 7-6.

“It was surreal,” Adams said while commenting on what it felt like running through to daylight. “Coach Troy Moses said we would return a kick-off tonight. I just tucked the ball and started running as fast as I could, then I heard the commentator talking as I got to the goal line.”

Think about it, you had Coach ‘Moses’ telling the team a kick-off would be returned and the Bandera players parted like it was the Red Sea.

This win was Biblical in many ways.

Three interceptions matched the total for this year when two of those picks came from players that had been told what to do during halftime adjustments from Coach Bret Hodges.
