Hawks Lose Series to Boerne, 7-1

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Senior Catcher Michael Brady

Canyon Lake lost their series to Boerne after a hard fought game Friday night, 7-1.

The Hawks out hit the Greyhounds but they could not bunch enough hits together to mount many threats.

Another good outing from pitcher Ryan Hutcheson as he held this very potent offense to just six hits.

J. J. Nance continues to climb up with his batting average after collecting two of CL’s hits.

Daniel Reed also got back into action and responded with a hit and the Hawks lone run.

“We played awesome defense,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant started. “We could not string hits together and Boerne had hits that were doubles, triples and a deep home run.”

Boerne has had a dominating baseball team this season with a 12-0 record in district play.

Look at the Greyhounds games with District 27-3A teams when you add runs from their three game series.

If you add runs scored for those games, then you would have the scores shown below from those composite scores.

 Bandera 34-1
 Fredericksburg 33-3
 Navarro 28-6
 Canyon Lake 11-3
 Wimberley* 10-4 (1 game)

*Will finish series with Wimberley next week.

CLJV Baseball Team will play for 3rd Place Saturday in Boerne

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Canyon Lake JV Baseball team split their two games on Thursday for the opening day of District 27-3A Tournament.

In the first game CLJV beat Bandera and then faced Boerne in a loss to a team that seems to have the Hawk’s number this season.

Anytime you have as many errors as you have hits will tell you that this might not be a good result.

Canyon Lake will now face one of the three teams that met in Boerne for the other three team pod.

Saturday at 12 Noon will be the start time as the Hawks will play for 3rd place finish in district play in Boerne.

Jonathan McGuire led CLJV with two hits while Hayden Dubois and Austin Headrick scored the only runs of this contest in that first inning.

Hawks JV Baseball Split Games with Navarro

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Canyon Lake JV baseball team split their games with Navarro Panthers last Monday night at the

JV Coach Brian Owens with Post Game Talk

Hawk Diamond. Winning the first game 7-4 and coming out on the short end 13-8 in the nightcap.

The Hawks dug themselves in a hole in both games, but the second game their hole was much deeper than a Hawk could climb (or fly) out of.

“We started both games the same in making the same mistakes over and over,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens said. “I challenged them on communicating, but for the most part I was pleased with our pitchers.”

Canyon Lake did have some good pitching in that first game as Nick Kissell had a decent outing with Gordon McCleary closing out this contest.

The Hawks did have a little bit of fireworks as Austin Headrick hit a two run home run in the bottom of that fourth inning giving Canyon Lake their lead back after allowing the tying runs in the top of that same inning.

Softball: Hawks Win, 13-3 over Boerne

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Boerne had a Triple-Play against the Hawks on Tuesday night’s loss to Canyon Lake, 13-3.

Sophomore Kelsey Ahrens showing off her .379 District 27-3A Batting Average

The good news is that a triple play means that CL had enough base runners to get that many players out on any given play.

With an eight run inning to start the game pretty much put this game away quickly as the Hawks were able to run rule the Greyhounds.

Ten players scored in this contest as Head Coach John Gallagher did all he could do to get playing time for his players.

McKenna Beseda continued her record setting season when she had two hits in that first inning as CL batted around the score book

1 Reached on Error (roe)
2 Batters Hit by Pitch (hbp)
3 Hits

Hawks Lose, 1-0 to Boerne

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

If Boerne is ranked in the Top 5 for the State of Texas, then based on the past two contests with the

Ace Travis Walker

Greyhounds, Canyon Lake should be ranked in the Top 10.

Simply put, the Hawks lost another one run game to a very sound baseball team and all they have to show for this outing is another loss.

However, that is not entirely true based on the level of play displayed on Tuesday night at the Hawk’s Baseball Diamond.

Travis Walker was nails on the mound as he held the Greyhounds to four hits and CL’s defense was just as impressive in helping to keep this game in doubt until that last out.

Walker had Boerne guessing at the plate as he threw the ‘eefus’ pitch with mastery.

“I’ve been throwing that pitch since I was 12 years old,” Walker recollected. “They called it the ‘Big Cheese’, and somedays it is on and somedays it is off.”

That pitch would be classified as being ‘on’ this evening.

Lady Hawks get Burned Playing with Fire in Loss to Texans, 7-6

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Senior McKenna Beseda leads Canyon Lake with 28 hits and .549 Batting Average

Canyon Lake gave up their precious lead in the seventh inning and with that lead also gave up a chance for the playoffs.

The Hawks were playing with fire for much of this game as Wimberley had left 12 base runners stranded through the first six innings.

Canyon Lake had kept the Texans on those bases with no runs showing for a potent team batting average.

Texans’ on base percentage was .535 for the game.

Hits 11
Walks 8
Hit Batters 4

The Hawks were opportunistic by having some clutch outs.

Inning on base runs out
First 3 1 Pop up to Kelsey Ahrens
Second 2 1 Great running catch by McKenna Beseda in centerfield.

Hawk’s Track and Field Meet (in one word) Disappointing

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Disappointing Track Meet for Canyon Lake as scratches and being DQ on the Relays were so dominant you needed a big eraser in order to take all those potential points that literally flew out the window.

There was some good news at this year’s event but so much bad happened you had to wonder if the Mayans were off a few months with their predictions of the world ending.

Three different Relays were DQ, two for the Boy’s and one that involved the Girl’s Track Team.

How about some good news:
Marisa Ellis came through with two first place finishes as she will try to add to Field Events to her State Track resume.

Ellis topped the 37 foot mark and also topped that High Jump bar with a 5’4 jump, which was two inches more than she had for this season.

Jordan Anderson also will be going to his third Region Tournament in Kingsville when he soared to a 6’2 inch High Jump. Anderson has a best of 6’6 at the Hawk Relays and tried for a personal best (6’7) after being the last Jumper standing.

All three of these marks are among the top in 3A meets that have been compiled up to this point.

The ReSporter will have some more research this weekend to give a better idea of where these two athletes stand as well as CL’s other qualifiers in this Region as well as in Texas.

The 1600 Meter Run was also a present surprise as Mike Russell has now broken his own record by another 6 seconds when he coasted across the finish line right in front of Senior Chris Neiland.

Canyon Lake had never had a runner break that 5 minute barrier and in this Meet had two on that same run.

That bodes well for future years as well as the JV Girls Team, who continued to impress with another good Meet.

Kaelin Simmons will have two chances at Regions when she will have an opportunity to compete in the Shot Put and Discus.

CL Hawks Boy’s Golf Finish 4th in District

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Canyon Lake could not get out of the quicksand at Wimberley Quick Sand Golf Course quick enough to have a chance of advancing in this year’s season.

A good year with several good tournaments but putting themselves in a hole on that first round of play was too much to overcome.

The Hawks will have a good nucleus coming back for next season and right now that will have to suffice as this group of players now are resting on the 19th hole.

Softball Hawks Backs Against Wall after Loss to Bandera, 8-0

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Canyon Lake backs are up against a wall as they are drawing close to the end of this season schedule.

The Hawks could not find a bat large enough to gain any hits and if when a larger bat was found, then it proves to be too heavy to get around on the pitched ball.

Suffice to say the offense was dormant and only having six base runners did not give much chance for a rally being staged.

Canyon Lake will take the diamond this Friday at the Hawk Field when Wimberley comes to town.

The Hawks will need to sweep the rest of their games to give them a chance to making this year’s playoffs.

Two of the three games the Hawks have won in the first round and that will make the Wimberley game huge.

But help will also be needed, but first things first would be winning and then see what happens.

The JV game will start at 5pm and then first pitch for the Varsity will be 6pm.

Hawks Snake Bit in Loss to Wimberley, 10-8

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Hawks are snake bit by Wimberley after losing their second game in the last inning of play this

Defensive Specialist T. J. Jones

season.

Canyon Lake went into that last inning up by two runs and even escaped one scare before the Texans found the snake needed to put the Hawks out of their misery.

After a walk to the Texan’s lead off hitter, CL had some luck when they caught the tying run off of third base after a failed squeeze play and still up by one run.

Those two outs could not make it to three before Wimberley loaded the bases and scored three runs for a two run lead and game against this ‘Snake Bit’ Hawk team.

Canyon Lake did work 10 walks with only one strike out from the battery of Wimberley pitchers. Still not enough of those key hits that could of iced this game away.

The Hawks now find themselves down two games for a chance to plug themselves into that third playoff spot.

JJ Nance had two great bunt plays, with one going down as a hit and keeping that inning going after a double from Travis Walker. Both players would score in the third inning.
