Softball: Best of Times and the Worst of Times

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

It was the ‘Best’ of times and it was the ‘Worst’ of time, for

Short Stop Vicky Henderson

the Canyon Lake Hawks in what turned out to be their last game of the season in a loss to Navarro Panthers, 5-4 in extra innings at Huber Ranch in Seguin.

“This was a tough one to lose,” Head Coach John Gallagher started. “We came in with a lot of confidence….we were a little tight….we had a good comeback…but we stranded too many runners.”

The Hawks found it hard to get any offense going and eventually found themselves down after a four run inning by Navarro in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Canyon Lake had the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, but could not capitalize when Brittney Schoettle started the inning with the Hawk’s first hit of the game.

After Kelsey Ahrens grounded into a fielders choice leaving two runners on base. Vicky Henderson loaded the bases next with a walk, giving Mary Jordan a chance, but a first ball hit to the first baseman quickly ended the inning.

Canyon Lake Misses Boat, Lose to Billies, 4-0

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Canyon Lake will have to rely on some help in their next game in order to have a

Senior Mary Caroline Jordan

chance for the playoffs.

The Hawks lost to Fredericksburg, 4-0 Tuesday and now have a Must Win against Navarro this Friday.

Not only will the game be a must win, but Wimberley will be in a must lose to give your Hawks a chance.

Wimberley will be playing at Bandera which is the good news, since Bandera is in first place and will be playing the Texans on their home turf.

So: Hawks need a win and Wimberley needs a loss.

Canyon Lake was held to just two hits, both off the bat of SS Vicky Henderson.

Softball Outlook for last two Games

Monday, April 16th, 2012

One thing we know about the District 26-3A Softball race, is that

Senior Pitcher Missy Romero

Senior Pitcher Missy Romero

Boerne will finish last.

Now the fun stuff starts as the season comes down to the last two games this week.

The ReSporter would like to go over some prognostication for this week’s games.

First thing first….whoever is playing Boerne is going to win that game this week. So, with that being a given, we will give Wimberley and Fredericksburg a win right off the bat (pardon the pun).

That will leave Canyon Lake in another must win situation over Fredericksburg for this Tuesday game. Yes, the Hawks could lose and still make it, but a win would certainly get the cement mixers going for placing this team in the playoffs.

The Hawks could lose to Fredericksburg and still make the playoffs, but the door would not be as wide open.

Softball: CL has BIG WIN, Beat Bandera, 4-1

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Canyon Lake won another big game Monday night as they outlasted First

Senior Missy Romero

Senior Missy Romero

Place Bandera at Hawk Field, 4-1.

The win is huge as the teams jockey for playoff position.

Bandera had beaten every district foe in the first round of games and now with a Hawk win, it will allow the girls an extra loss.

If Bandera runs the table from the rest of district play, then the Hawks will benefit by being the only District 26-3a team to beat the Bulldogs.

Missy Romero did the damage from the plate and circle.

“We played with alot of confidence compared to the first meeting,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “Romero kept them off balance all night.”

The Hawks had another big fifth inning as Brittney Schoettle reached base on an error. Mary Jordan then bunted and reached base adding pressure to the visitors. McKenna Beseda was next with a hit to load the bases for Romero.

Romero had a hard single up the middle scoring two and then vintage Beseda scoring on the throw home.

Romero also helped her pitching counterpart with a double and scoring on a Briana Young single.

Holding Bandera to one run and also contributing three rbi’s made the result very sweet for a player that had wanted this team.

Softball: Hawks Walk All Over the Greyhounds, 10-1

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

You have heard of the old phrase, ‘a walk is better than a hit’, well last Thursday

Centerfielder Mary Caroline Jordan

Centerfielder Mary Caroline Jordan

night in Boerne, the CL Hawks got to practice that adage in a, 10-1 victory over Boerne.

Here are some numbers that show the wildness of the Boerne pitcher.

Sixteen walks, countless wild pitches and passed balls (which accounts for the low number of rbi’s), and four Hawks that were hit by pitches.

Canyon Lake had an on base percentage of .533 as a team and pretty much just needed a leash in order to go ‘Walk’ the dog. (Greyhound)

There were three Hawks that were able to escape the walk on their at bat.

Tail Gate Tradition Continues

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Last year during the end of Canyon Lake’s Softball season, you could walk by a few

A well fed Tailgate Crew

A well fed Tailgate Crew

students that had some ‘grub’ on the grill and enjoying there last days before the end of school.

Oh yeah, they would also visit the Softball game that was on their way to the playoffs for the first time in the history of this program.

These Students were mostly Seniors, but there were also enough younger aged participants that would allow this event to be repeated for the next campaign.

The CL Flag draped trucks would be seen when driving  onto the parking lot close to the Field of Dreams.

“I just like to BBQ,” Senior Brandon Berger said. “And were all about supporting the girls (Softball Team).”

The crew will eat and enjoy each others company, but as soon as the food is finished…the students will make themselves heard in support for the Hawk’s Softball team.

Softball: Hawks have Two Game Winning Streak Beat Billies, 7-0

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Canyon Lake now has a two game winning streak over Fredericksburg. Repeat: The

Center Fielder Mary Caroline Jordan

Center Fielder Mary Caroline Jordan

Hawks have beaten the Billies in two consecutive games.

Not impressed? Missy Romero pitched a no-hitter in the win.

Not impressed? Hawks offense batted around in the lineup, scoring six runs in one inning.

Not Impressed? The No-Hitter had six outs via strikeout, but the DEFENSE played an exceptional game in the outfield as well as the infield.

Not Impressed? Don’t know what else to say, except the trinity for softball was clicking with offense, defense, and pitching and this trifecta could not of happened at a better time.

Softball: CL time to Right the Ship

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Canyon Lake is now three games into District 26-3A play and are in a position

McKenna Beseda

that needs some attention.

The last two games has had a defense that has had 12 errors …Not Good.

The offense has only produced two runs …Not Good.

Yes, this Hawk team is young, but if they can get their act together, then the epilogue can entice an excited crowd for the end of the play.

In other words, Canyon Lake can not afford to get too far behind in the race for a playoff spot.

Wimberley game finished with a 3-0 loss, but allowing so many extra runners on base via errors proved to be a down fall.

Softball: Hawks Run Over Greyhounds, 14-4

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

The Canyon Lake Hawks have started their District 26-3A race by running over the

Kelsey Ahrens

Kelsey Ahrens

Boerne Greyhounds last Wednesday, 14-4 in the shortened run ruled game.

“I think we were ready to play and came out aggressive  offensively,” Head Coach John Gallagher started. “We just got to keep working and plugging.”

The lineup looks like it might be set for most of the games for the remainder of the season.

McKenna Beseda started the game in left field, which allowed Kelsey Ahrens to take third base and moving Lilimae Dailey to first. A position she played last year.

“Beseda is good out there,” Coach Gallagher surmised. “Her speed is an asset. Now with (Mary) Jordan at centerfield we can play quick….but this will all be based on who we play.”

Missy Romero was dominant from the circle and held Boerne to two hits in the contest.

Boerne helped the Hawks cause with seven errors, which allowed the Hawks long innings and 12 runs to start the contest.
