The Hilltop ReSporter is Starting Third Year

Saturday, February 2nd, 2013

The Hilltop ReSporter started in February 2010 after The Hilltop Reporter could not survive as a Newspaper earlier that year.

Needing something to do with a passion, The ReSporter wanted to give Students from two schools more than just a line in a sports page with a score.

Hence, it was time to help by responding with a Website that would just deal with sports for Canyon Lake and Bracken Christian.

It has been a fast two years and The ReSporter has churned out 674 articles covering as many sports as possible.

Football to Track and every sport in between has been a fun venture keeping fingers typing whether the result was a loss or win.

Several nights a week either on the road or at a home game has been a challenge, but just having a chance to report on Students makes this a worthwhile endeavor.

A special thanks for all the Businesses that have helped in supporting this site and thanks for reading.

The ReSporter looks forward to covering more events this coming season.

Hawk Softball is Right Around the Corner

Canyon Lake Softball is right around the corner as Basketball season will be ending next

Vicki Henderson returns for her Senior Season

Tuesday.

The Hawks will have two huge holes to fill with the departure of Missy Romero to College competition in Mississippi and Caroline Jordan a pretty good player in her own right.

CL only lost two players in last year’s squad, but losing your most complete player in the circle and in the batting circle will be a hard cog to fill in.

Add the departure of one of your best defensive outfield players in Caroline Jordan and you have two spots in the field becoming a huge puzzle piece to this season.

Take this in with what was lost with those two players:

.356 Missy Romero's Career Batting Average
.429 Romero's Season Average last season. (All-Time Best)
443 Number of At Bats adding both players career.
135 Career # of hits by both players.
117 Runs scored combining their careers.
81 Walks. The top two in this category all time for Canyon Lake.
77 RBI's for both players in their career.
45 Number of runs scored by the two players last season.
  39 Combined hits last season.
24 Walks, giving these two Hawks a two for one ratio with strikeouts.
12 Number of strikeouts combined last year.

Improved Free Throw Shooting could translate into Wins

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks have some encouraging signs that might help in climbing that hill for a chance to make the playoffs.

Free Throws is one of those times when teams can turn around a game. When a team is attempting to score points from their charity stripe, time stands still with points being scored without losing precious seconds on the clock while your team is in catch-up mode.

The Hawks have upped their ante for this part of the game by increasing their percentage to the good.

Before the Crockett game or the first 17 games this season your Hawks made 43 out of 100 free throws or 43% of their shots.

In their last five games (not counting Wimberley), Canyon Lake has made 59 shots out of 84 attempts. That will translate into a 70% improvement for the team.

Individually you might see how almost every girl has improved on their percentage.

Free Throws Before Crockett Game After Crockett Game
Tammy Dean 4-16 25% 6-8 75%
Kelsey Long 7-13 54% 4-5 80%
Amber Ramsey 10-25 40% 10-12 83%
Olivia Flores 10-17 59% 18-22 82%
Katie Williams 18-29 62% 11-17 65%
Trena Lorett 4-20 20% 3-4 75%
Dulce Brown 12-27 44% 3-8 38%
Hannah St. John 14-35 40% 4-8 50%
Kyndall Drum Has not attempted a free throw in the last five games.

Those numbers will and can add up for a team that is needing to shore up a couple more issues, but taking this season one step at a time will give you an idea that the climb is not that much further to be able to cash in on for some victories.

Canyon Lake will need to sweep Fredericksburg and Wimberley on their next round and steal a victory or hope that Fredericksburg slips up and loses a game that they were favored.

This is all based on an assumption that Boerne and Navarro are the two teams that will lead this season in district play.

Many of these items are fluid. The ReSporter just received the Stats for the Wimberley game while working on this story and that one item that might have caused this defeat was how the Hawks free throw shooting was back to how they were shooting in the first 17 games of the season.

Under 50% from the line in this game which was lost by four points. Yes, there had to be other variables going into that final score, but if you want to see that elephant in the room, then look no further than that free throw line.

The Hawks are one game under .500 in district play, but working on those little things can pay dividends. Good Luck!!

Hawk’s Basketball Get Ready for District Play

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

Canyon Lake’s quest for another playoff team will continue through this Winter and Spring.

Right now you have two promising scenarios with the Hawk Basketball programs.

The Girls and Boys teams have a legitimate chance to snag a T-Shirt company this coming season with help to design such a shirt.

Soccer has been tough to garner a playoff spot since this sport has been dominated by much larger schools since these teams play in a different district than CL’s other sports.

Because of a reduced number of teams that play that sport, the UIL combines 3A schools with 4A schools to crown a champion in Soccer each year.

The same is true for Canyon Lake’s Swimming team in having a district with larger schools. Another fact is that the Hawk Swimming program is still in it’s infancy stage and that makes competing in this tougher venue doubly hard.

Swimming also is much like Track and Field where playoffs are based on individuals in each event advancing instead of a Team getting in a bus for their next round of events after a District crowns a champion.

Canyon Lake has a few teams that have not had a chance to compete after a district race yet.

CLJV Boys Finish in Second Place in Texan Tournament

Saturday, December 1st, 2012

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity had a good run, finishing second in the Wimberley Baskeball Tournament this past weekend.

The Hawks won their morning contest against host Wimberley, which gave this never say die team a chance for a first place trophy.

Wimberley had a defense that forced eight turnovers in that first quarter and that allowed your Hawks only six shots at their basket.

Four made free throws helped close the gap for just a three point deficit going into their next quarter of action.

CL would win their next three quarters as the Hawks started taking better control of their possessions.

The third quarter was a telling stanza as Garret Winters was red hot from behind the arc scoring 12 points (all 3 pointers) that gave the separation from our friends to the North.

Bracken Warriors Flying Under the Radar

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

Bracken Christian has a gaudy 37-2 record over the past three years or how about a winning percentage of .949 during that time span.

Not to shabby is it, want more?

Those two losses were by a combined six points.

BCS during that same time frame has outscored their opponents by 988 points and of those 37 wins 22 have not gone four quarters because of the Mercy Rule. (If winning by 45 or more points after halftime, the game is called.)

Bracken has been to the final four for three years and counting. They are one game from advancing this year.

BCS, as they prepare for Abilene Christian Panthers, do not get much credit for a pretty nice resume as this upcoming game has your Warriors as much as a 35 point underdog.

The reason? Texas is a large State.

Take a map out and find out all you can about an El Paso six-man squad.
