GAME RECAP:
Canyon Lake just missed out for an opportunity to upend a #1 Ranked opponent as Austin LBJ held on for a 6 point win giving the Hawks an opening game loss to start District 13-4A, 34-28.
“We had a great week of practice but they are so fast,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We grew up tonight and we will get better…we were solid and did a good job of controlling the clock and just missed a couple of opportunities tonight.”
The Lake was able to realize a lead twice with that first score coming in a true fishing slot-t possession.covering 63 yards in 18 plays and draining the clock scoring with 23 seconds on the first quarter clock, 7-0 lead.
CL’s defense forced a Jaguar punt to open the game for LBJ leading for that score.
Kolten Ramey continues his onslaught of taking many of the all-time defensive stats totaling 13 tackles for (TFL) loss with 4 of those take-downs being behind the line of scrimmage.
Tackles TFL Sacks Kolten Ramey Stats 177 5th 65 1st 17 2nd 435 Bobby Flint 33 2nd Alex Kemp 20 1st Alex Kemp 285 Haden Lee 245 Greyson Lee 181 Jeremy Best
The Hawk Defense held LBJ 150 yards under their per game average that went a long way in opening the door for the CL offense to score points.
Ethan Schedlbaurer has been a welcome player on the defensive side of the ball and talked about the game and where the Hawks go now, “They (LBJ) different and were no different from previous games but we will have to take this result as an improvement and next week come back better than ever and always try to be our best.”
That 3rd quarter continues to have problems with another stanza of not scoring and only one touchdown in that quarter that came in the Hawks game with Georgetown East View.
Playing the top team in 4A Division I still had some good signs for Canyon Lake scoring 28 points and garnering over 100 yards more than what Austin had given up this season.
Griffen Williams as center was a key ingredient in a better rushing game, “We were a lot better I practice and our coaches set us up for success and watching film.”
On what will happen this week as district continues, “We (offensive line) will be working on staying low and staying on hips.”
The Lake had Johnson (143 yards) and James Bates (95 yards) right at the doorstep of previous Hawk teams than can hopefully get those cobwebs swapped away for a good finish.
CL was perfect passing percentage wise, but the results did not produce a passing grade throwing 2 times with only 1 yard advanced. That ranks 4th on the all-time list with 4 previous slot-t games with no yardage and the worst game was -4 yards against Bandera during the 2014 season.
Canyon Lake’s next opponent will be a road game at Taylor and a chance to get their first district win and a chance to control their own destiny in regards to being a high seed for the post-season.
Moral victories are frowned upon but being this close for an upset will hopefully be a booster shot for a team that can still realized a chance for a longer season.
Go Hawks!!
