Alysha Perez is ready for fast times at Area Meet

Canyon Lake will be hosting the Area Track Meet this Wednesday as the Hawk Ladies will be searching a chance for another meet in Kingsville if they can qualify with a 4th place or better.

This Area Meet will consist of District 28-4A and District 27-4A schools after the athletes qualified with a 4th or better time, throw, or jump in their district meets two weeks ago.
“I am very optimistic in having the largest number of qualifiers to make it to the regional meet in my 4 years of being the head girls coach,” John Barthels stated. “The girls are working hard every day to get better and to have their best times and distances of the year happen on Wednesday at home at the area track meet.”

Skylar Hurst will have 5 events to add more points in next week’s Area Meet

Skylar Hurst continues her quest for taking first place as she has a clear vision of Bailey Drum and needing 23 more points to realize that goal.

Hurst will be entered in 5 events in next week’s Area Meet at the Hawk Nest and that would be a good time to come out and see this young lady as well as both the Boys and Girls that qualified after completing in the District 28-4A Meet at Fredericksburg last week.

There will be several Hawks that will be in the running for a trip to Kingsville for the Region Meet to be held the end of April.
Caimen McDonough has one of the best 300 meter hurdle times and Heath McDonough will have a chance of making another trip with his High Jump event.

The Girl’s 4×100 relay team will see if they can make it around the track as they too, have whittled down there time and will try to continue their trek.

Carley Dubois, Alysha Perez, Audrey Schulze, and Madison Churbe will attempt to break the 50 second barrier as these speedsters set their sights on Kingsville.

The Ladies Track team finished in 2nd place for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity at the recent District 28-4A Meet in Fredericksburg.

CL scored their most points in district play at this meet as the Hawks seemed poised to raise the bar with more solid athletes in the coming years.

Depth will also be on display this time next year as Canyon Lake will lose a handful of Seniors while graduating up a solid JV squad.

Caimen McDonough racked up 24 points and Heath McDonough followed with 21 points as these multi-event athletes will be competing in multiple areas for a chance of making Region Meet the last part of April.

CL Boys Varsity Finish 2nd as they Prepare for District 28-4A Meet

Sunday, April 2nd, 2017

Jaren Marmolejo is ready to go the distance.

The Boy’s Track Team both hit triple digits against larger schools last Thursday in Lockhart Lion Relays.

The Junior Varsity scored 129 points, finishing behind Killeen and Canyon High School. CL’s Varsity beat Canyon High School  while Killeen ran away on this night with 180 points.

“I thought that the Lockhart Meet went just as we would hope.   We are starting to see improvement on almost every effort,” Head Coach Troy Moses stated. “This is what we want as we approach the district track meet.  Everything we do all year is to make sure we are competing at our best come the district meet. I am very confident right now as the district meet is only 5 days away.”

Cody Kline and Heath McDonough were high point makers with 22 and 23 respectfully. Caimen McDonough just missed out on passing his brother and Greyson Lee was second for the JV squad.

CL Lady Hawks Lock in 3rd Place in Lockhart Relays

Junior Skylar Hurst after tough day on Cinders

CL Lady Hawks finished 3rd with the Junior Varsity and Varsity in Lockhart last Thursday as Canyon Lake and Gonzales were the only schools that were below 5A in size for the 7 team meet.

That will go a far way as the Hawks now start preparing for District 28-4A next Wednesday and Thursday.

Freshman Madison Churbe would finish high point for the Varsity while Elena Vargas would finish at the top for the JV crew.

This Meet had a different format than previous track & field get togethers….the Girls had their running events while the Boys were busy in their Field Event mantra.

That made those events involving running having a much smaller window of rest which would be detrimental for having personal bests.

      GO Canyon Lake!!

Canyon Lake had a hard time getting home on Thursday night as their bus had to take on that furious wind after a 3rd place finish for the Varsity and a 2nd place trophy for the Junior Varsity.

Lester Boehm is now entrenched in 3rd place for CL as he won the 200 meter dash with a time, 22.93 and on a calm night might have had this athlete moving even further up the pack. The good news is having another chance this Thursday in Lockhart.

Lady Hawks Track goes Dancing at the Texan Relays

Sunday, March 26th, 2017

Alysha Perez sets new mark in 100 meter dash at Texan Relays

Canyon Lake went dancing at the Texan Relays in Wimberley last Thursday as all the teams performed well with some key athletes missing due to Dancing Competition that was scheduled that same day.

“I was proud of our efforts again on Thursday,” Head Girls Track Coach John Barthels stated. “We had a decent effort in basically two day practice, post spring break week and I was impressed with several of the results going into the wind.”

That wind was consistent throughout the meet and it showed no relief for those events that would have those runners heading south.

Skylar Hurst was high point once again with 26 points followed by Alysha Perez’s 19 points after shattering the 100 meter dash record by two tenths of a second. These same two students had first place finishes along with the 4×100 relay team.

“Obviously our 100 and 100 hurdle times improved with the wind at our backs,” Coach Barthels continued. “The form looked good from Alysha (Perez) in the 100 and she won so that was great.”
