Marisa Ellis is working on her Finals this week before Graduation

Senior High Jumper Maris Ellis

The ReSporter had an opportunity to talk with Senior Marisa Ellis as she was preparing for the State Track Meet in Austin this week-end.

Ellis has been competing for Canyon Lake for two years and will certainly go down as one of the Hawks best as she enters into her last time to compete as a high school student, representing the Hawks.

Volleyball was a sport that Ellis was active in for a whole rotation and anchored the team no matter where she would be on the court.

Her junior year she also helped the Hawks out on the basketball court, but Ellis would be the first to let you know that was not one of her best sports.

Last year for her first year at Canyon Lake she took her Triple Jump to the State Meet and continued a streak of three years now where CL Girls Track Team has had an athlete compete at the pinnacle of track events for high school students.

Jessica Cunningham competed in the Pole Vault during her Senior year in 2011.

Now Ellis has upped the ante and will not only be competing in Austin again this year, but will be competing in the High Jump.

The ReSporter had a chance to catch up with Ellis to find out how this week will shape up.

Jordan Anderson after winning Region Meet High Jump

Senior High Jumper Jordan Anderson will now take his act to Austin this week-end for the State Track Meet where he will be trying to become Canyon Lake’s first State Champion in sports.

Anderson will go down as the most decorated track athlete and will also have some marks that will take a while to best by other tracksters.

How about having the Hawks best times in the 100, 200, 400 Meter Runs to start with.

Add to that his records in the Long Jump and High Jump and you get the idea that this young man is special.

“I had to make Jordan run track,” Robin Anderson (Jordan’s Mom) said earlier this week during his signing with Angelo State in Track and Field.

This young man will now add Field to his Track competition in Austin. Qualifying in the High Jump event has made that a reality this year. Last season Anderson finished 6th in the 400 Meter Run in Austin.

The ReSporter had time to talk with Jordan and wanted to share more information for the Canyon Lake community.

Jordan Anderson signs with Angelo State University for Track

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Katie Williams and Jordan Anderson have had a stellar careers at Canyon Lake

Jordan Anderson signing for a chance to run at Angelo State with Family looking on.

High School these past four years and now embark on their next quest as both of these students have signed on for playing their sports in College.

“Jordan Anderson is one of the most decorated track athletes we have ever had at Canyon Lake,” Athletic Director Drum said while introducing Anderson to a crowd before his signature would send him to Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.

Anderson has the best CL times in the 100, 200, 400 Meter Dash while also holding the Hawk’s best Long Jump and High Jump marks.

Last season, the Hawks, many times could count on 50 points when entered into track meets at many venues.

“We forced him to run track in middle school,” Robin Anderson said when asked what she remembered about her son’s start in track. “Coach Chapman started him out with track and he now absolutely loves it now.”

Sometimes your Mom and Dad really, ‘Do’, know best.

“When you make an arrow, you need to make everything about it so it will go straight,” Shad Anderson (Jordan’s Dad) said eloquently. “When you shoot it, then it will go straight to God.”

Jordan will certainly give you a nonchalant feeling as he strolls to his track event, you don’t know how this student might cause you to give him all your attention as he blazes around the track.

Track & Field: Hawks Get Two to State Meet

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

Canyon Lake will have two representatives for the Track & Field State Meet, May 10-11 in Austin after two

Jordan Anderson Jumping High

CL athletes decided to Jump over to Austin in a couple of weeks.

Marisa Ellis and Jordan Anderson will both be making their second visit after placing in last year’s meet, albeit in different events.

Both Ellis and Anderson participated last season in the Triple Jump and 400 Meter Dash respectfully and now have come together to compete again in the High Jump.

In the Region Track Meet in Kingsville over the week-end Ellis had a rough hour as she competed in her two qualifying events at the same time.

That seems to not be a very fair way of coming up with the best athletes as Ellis was going from one venue to another as other girls were waiting for Ellis to High or Triple Jump.

So, as other students were able to focus and concentrate on one event, you had Ellis going back and forth to hope and compete at her best.

Track: Marisa Ellis Will be Jumping on her way to Kingsville

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Senior High Jumper Maris Ellis

Hawks Region Track qualifiers will take center stage on Friday as they will show off their skills against fellow athletes from 8 Districts from Region IV.

Marisa Ellis will be another Hawk that will be entered in two events and will be trying to make her second trip to Austin with a first or second finish.

Ellis was in Austin last year where she finished 6th Place for Canyon Lake in the Triple Jump.

This year and how the competition looks, Ellis might have a better chance of going to the State Meet via the High Jump.

Ellis had a 5’5 jump in a meet that was not deemed official earlier this year and a jump like that on Friday would certainly give her a decent chance of advancing as their seems to be a log jam with several of the students having a 5’4 inch standard.

Six of the eight districts in Region IV have qualifiers with that same 5’4 inch mark.

This will be an event where a girl that scratches at any height especially the lower marks might be on the outside looking in since so many of the ladies are so close in abilities.

Strategy might be the best avenue as each jumper could wait out the lower heights in enter the jumps later giving that athlete a better chance. Of course, that could also hurt since working your way up the ladder might be their best bet to advance.

Kaelin Simmons is Ready to Wow! in Region Track Meet

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Senior Discus/Shot Put thrower Kaelin Simmons will be on her way to Region this Week-end as

Senior Kaelin Simmons cheering on the Softball Team.

she will be searching for that one throw that might propel her to another Meet called State.

Last year, Simmons made Region Meet in the Shot Put and decided to make it two events this season when she had one of those special throws in District 27-3A Meet in the Discus.

Simmons throw wowed her and Coach Hooper when they measured it at over 110 feet.

Why? Simmons best throw was a good 18 feet less than that total for her tries throughout track season.

Simmons had her best Discus throw in last year’s district meet when she heaved that heavy frisbee for a distance of 89’9.

District Meets agree with this young lady as she went into this years Meet with a shot-put throw of 32’2 and Discus best of 93’5 feet.

She hit 34′ even in the Shot for second place and then her 111’0 Discus throw giving her a first place.

Lady Hawks 4×400 Meter Relay has some Unfinished Business

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

The Canyon Lake foursome of Mariah Ellis, Brookelynn Helmke, Hannah

Sophomore Mariah Ellis is Thumbs Up for this years Relay team in Regions

Graves, and Amber Ramsey are carrying on a tradition for Girls Track in that they are running in the Region Meet for the third year in a row.

Each year they are at the doorstep knocking on that door for the State Meet. With times in the 4:10 area this team seems to be the closest in that line of 1600 Meter Relay teams to break that 4:10 barrier.

That will be something they will need to accomplish in order to give them a legitimate chance of being one of the last two Relay Teams standing.

Mariah Ellis will be running in her second Region Meet this week and certainly had a spectacular run at District 27-3A two weeks ago on her leg.

Ellis made up a some ground and caught several teams on that back stretch to get the baton to Amber Ramsey for her anchor leg.

“All I was thinking was I want to make Regions,” Mariah said with resolve. “When everyone is cheering for you it pushes you to go.”

Go, is what Ellis did on that night as she had the home crowd cheering her and the other group of girls for a place to keep having a chance of advancing.

Canyon Lake did not have their best time in district but they were not off much from their run in the Hawk Relays where they had the best 4×400 Relay time ever for the Hawks.

Region Track Meet This Week-End for CL Athletes

Sunday, April 21st, 2013

Canyon Lake Sports is nearing their final competition with opposing teams as Baseball will

Senior Kaelin Simmons will compete in Shot-Put and Discus at Region Meet

now enter their final week and Track and Field will be entering the Region Meet this Week-End.

The ReSporter will have more Track articles as we prepare of this week’s meet.

Enough distances and times have been recorded to get an idea of how each of CL’s athletes will fare going into this week’s Region Meet.

Jordan Anderson still has the best High Jump mark and has a student that has attained that same height.

Anderson has not put a lot of time with this event in the past and now finds himself immersed in wanting to end his track career on a high note. That is certainly doable based on having the best jump in the region.

Once again, as Canyon Lake certainly proved in their District Meet, nothing is in the bag and you have to come out and bring your ‘A’ game no matter what your rank or circumstances.

Their are four athletes with a high jump of 6’4 and then a sharp drop off from that mark. IF and The ReSporter means IF, Anderson can take care of business then he will have a decent chance of advancing to State and from there can boast of going to State in competing in two different venues in his last two years.

Marisa Ellis also competed in the State Meet last year, but will certainly have her work cut out for her as her Region is certainly loaded with several ladies with high marks.

In District 25 and 26 there are two jumpers with a 39′ and almost 41′ jumps so far this season.

Being that you need to finish in the top two to advance will put Marisa in a place that will certainly need a leap that can improve her present best up to this point.

Marisa Ellis has a 37’3.75 jump and is ranked right behind those two students.

Ellis has a tough road with the High Jump also as she is tied with five other athletes with that same mark. That simply means that the one student that can reach that mark with the least amount of scratches will certainly advance.

How Track and Field Hawks might Fare in Region IV Meet (updated 4/20)

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

The results have been updated again and The ReSporter has colored some District’s with Red, which indicates those two districts have just completed their Area Meet. You will notice that those times and distances have changed.

Here is the skinny for our Hawk participants for their next match up in Kingsville for

Senior Marisa Elles jumping out of the picture

the Region Track Meet.

First off many of the schools that just finished their District Meet will now be off to an Area Meet to try and advance again.

The Hawks already know who will be at the Region Meet and the following results will show you how our Athletes stack up to the area students.

First off the information below is for the whole State of Texas, but you need to concentrate on the Region IV districts and at this writing there are only two besides CL’s District that is known.

District 25 and 26 will be one of the toughest for Canyon Lake to try and beat out for their spot at State.

Looking at these results from around the State, Marisa Ellis will be more challenged from those two earlier mentioned district’s results.

High Jump for the Boy’s so far has Jordan Anderson looking to have a good chance of advancing based on earlier results. With only two more districts to report, Anderson’s 6’6 leap has a good chance of advancing based on the results that are in from Region IV.

District 8-3A does have an athlete that has the same height as Anderson but that means a match-up at State.
