Canyon Lake Boy’s and Girl’s Track Teams will have a week off after getting a cold

reception in Kerrville for the Antler’s Relays last Thursday night.

“It was FREEZING!!! 45 degrees and 20-30 mph winds not a good day for track,” Head Girls Coach Lacey Lambert said. “Before it got too cold… Marisa Ellis broke school records in the triple jump with 36’6” shattering the previous record as well as jumping 5’3” in high jump.”

Track is one sport where wearing more clothes will give you slower times. Football has pads and lots of exertion, where Track teams rely on less weight on the body so they can maximize their events.

Coach Lambert was very excited with some of the younger athletes, “JV Freshman Grace Allen also triple jumped for the first time and won with a jump of 31’7”.  Hayley Melone jumped 14’ in the JV long jump as well.”

Canyon Lake found themselves with some pretty strong competition as they found

it hard to score in multiple events.

This competition will improve the team in future meets as the Hawk Relays had some teams that will do well when their District meets arrive in more than a month.

CL scored in seven of the events and seem to find many areas where a few more weeks of work outs will eventually pay dividends.

The Hawk Junior Varsity finished with 83 points and finished fourth scoring in 11 events.

Canyon Lake finished only five points from Wimberley as the two teams only had their Relay teams compete in last week’s Blanco Relays.

Head Track Coach Terri Sanders talks BCS Track Season

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

The ReSporter: “You have some returning and transfer athletes this season, what are your

expectations as the season looms this coming Friday?”

Terri Sanders: “Senior Grady Achilles will be returning to compete for his 100m and 200m state championship titles.  He is also a part of a powerful 4×1 relay consisting of Kevin Knapick, Austin Wilkinson and Connor Simmons.  This should be a great relay team! Austin Wilkinson transferred in and is a powerful runner competing in the 4×1, 4×2, 200m and long jump. Kevin Knapick will once again be competing in 4×1, 4×2, 400m and shot and disc. We have a team of 35 track team members who practice hard and I expect very positive results.”

The ReSporter: “What disadvantages do you have with other programs that actually have a track instead of grass and dirt?”

Terri Sanders: “Our disadvantage in not having a track is especially difficult for our relay teams.  It is hard to practice hand offs on grass and expect it to be the same on a track with cleats.  All our other events we make work without the track and it sometimes proves to our advantage in that as we practice on uneven terrain, it makes running on a track seem so much easier!”

Canyon Lake Girls Track Finish Fourth in Blanco Relays

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

The Canyon Lake Girls Varsity Track started the season with some personal and

team records as the 2012 campaign commenced at Blanco last Thursday.

When asked if she was encouraged by the opening of the season, Head Track Coach Lacey Lambert exclaimed, “Yes…I am. Our girls times are where we need to be. We have a big freshman group and they are going to help us in the relays.”

Another athlete that should help is Marisa Ellis as the Volleyball/Basketball/Track Athlete continues to add to an impressive first year after moving in from Midlothian last Summer.

Ellis placed first in the High Jump with a jump of 5’2” and a Triple Jump of 34’2.5”, which turned out to be a Canyon Lake record, but not a personal best for this Junior.

“I want to beat my best Triple Jump of 36’11.5” and go to the Regional,” Ellis started. “I was rushing between the high jump and triple jump and doing that did not allow me to set my timing for the two events.”

Hawks are off to the Races as Varsity Boys Win Blanco Relays

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

Canyon Lake started track season on a strong note last Thursday in Blanco.

The Varsity Boys scored 153 points beating second place Comfort by 36 points.

Several athletes had good performances with a few Canyon Lake All-Time Records set.

Jordan Anderson set the bar pretty high as he totaled 50 points for the Hawks winning all five events entered.

Anderson set a new 400 meter run record winning with a 51.89 run. The race was .60 of a second better than Mikk Griffin who graduated last season and is now running for Angelo State University.

Anderson also set a new all time best on the long jump when he bolted for 20’10.75”, he jumped over Eric Nelson’s record by four inches. Anderson’s previous best was 20’1”, giving you an idea of this athlete chances of making some noise this season.

Can Relays Relate?

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

The Canyon Lake Hawks in just their third year of competition won all three relay races this past season in the District Track and Field Meet. That feat is even more remarkable based on the fact the Hawks had only one Senior performing.

In the 4×400 relay the Hawks finished with 3:30.81 time which was a full two seconds better than Fredericksburg. The Texans were next, five seconds slower than Canyon Lake. This Relay was the only one where the Hawks had a Senior running. The two alternates were sophomores.
