COUNTDOWN TO ALL-DECADE TEAM EVENT, #1
Friday, January 17th, 2020TOP 10 ALL-DECADE TEAM is down to 1
The ReSporter had fun going back in time to give the Hawk Nation an idea of what would be those final sports or events these past 10 years.
Before talking bout that last team The ReSporter remembers an event that should be mentioned, not as a team, but as a milestone for a height that has not been matched.
Marisa Ellis would accomplish a feat that stands alone for individual Hawk Athletes these past 10 years.
Winning a State Championship in the High Jump came totally out of the blue. This young lady had qualified for the State Meet in two events and her, bread and butter, event would reside with the Triple Jump Event that had her in the top echelon since her arrival to the hill-country.
Marisa had qualified for State competition with the 7th best height compared to the other 8 athletes that would be entered. So, to think she would be able to place in the top 6 would be a chance….but to make it to No. 1 would have been wishful thinking.
There was another competitor that had reached 6 inches higher than Marisa’s best effort up to that date.
The event started with Marisa being able to clear each rung on the bar on her first try. The athlete that had the best jump coming into this event had decided to pass on those lower beginning height barriers.
With a miss on her first try would put Marisa in the driver’s seat if the two happened to not pass the same height, ending the competition.
The person with the least amount of misses would declared the winner.
The ReSporter was not at this event but was being given updates by her Mom and after a few minutes of no communication….the thought on this end was a miss and wondering if Marisa had finished in the top 3.
Well….that delay in communication would be a Mom/Family going crazy before being at a place where the result would be shared with The ReSporter.
That feeling of joy was indescribable for this Senior who had not only been a Trackster but also competing Volleyball and Basketball for Canyon Lake.
Well deserved and certainly a place on the Top 10 List for The Lake.

BOY’S SOCCER REGIONAL TOURNAMENT will be The ReSporter’s #1 team event this past decade.
Soccer is not one of The ReSporter’s strong suits but this past season (2019) Canyon Lake was able to make a soccer fan out of this sports writer after an eventual trip that would end with a Final Four berth.
There was at least 4 games that could have easily made the Top 10, so The ReSporter had fun going back to last year’s articles to give the top game to their first round contest with Gonzales when the Hawks scored the winning goal as the clock showed 0:00 on the clock.
Canyon Lake finished 2nd in District play and seemed to finally starting to peak in their last contest during district play in a win over Fredericksburg. This win was totally dominated by The Lake which had the Billies in disarray and with their eyes counting the bugs on the turf as they exited the field.
Head Coach Ryan Tierney remembered the Gonzales game thusly, “Not sure what I should focus on about that
game. Remember being down 1-0 at halftime and the guys just exhausted, but it was a running theme for that season to be down at halftime. We talked about how we have been in that situation a number of times and that we had to continue to be a tough second half team. The greatest memories I have for that game was Jorge De Leon’s break away down the right wing. He put the ball back into his left and from way out he put it top left corner with his left foot to tie the game. Momentum had shifted at that point. Then the miraculous goal with 3 seconds left and time running out to win the game. Butler had cleared the ball down the right wing and Trenton Lorett pressured the ball enough to force a corner with 15 seconds on the clock. Our entire team was running forward for a last ditch effort. I didn’t think Lorett was going to get the corner kick off at first. I was yelling at the top of my lungs to send it in. He got it off and Josh Sczech got onto it back post to put the ball in the net for the win. I wasn’t sure if the goal counted at first because time had expired. But once the referee pointing to the middle of the field I knew and we all stormed the field. I would like to say this was the craziest game I had ever been apart of, but we were a part of a couple crazy games that season.”
Coach Tierney mentioned how CL had advanced to being one of the Final Four participants in Georgetown.
Playoff Recap:
First Round: Canyon Lake 3 Lampasas 2
This was a come from behind win for the Hawks.
Second Round: Canyon Lake 3 Bellville 1
This would be the one game where CL led from the beginning. But it did have some anxious moments. As this would be the contest Shawn Bell would be inserted at the goalie after spending his regular season on the Hawks’ Junior Varsity.
Third Round: Canyon Lake 5 Austin Eastside Memorial 3
This was an incredible win for CL, after fighting from behind the whole contest and winning after two Overtimes and then shoot-out for a chance in going to the Valley for the 2nd time in 3 years.
Fourth Round: Canyon Lake 2 Gonzales 1
This is the game you are reading about now.
Fifth Round: Canyon Lake 1 Progreso 0
Very easily could have been put with the AEM/Gonzales games.
A sport that was the last to make the playoffs that ended with the best results in Hawk History in the playoffs as Canyon Lake had their best crowd ever make the trip to Georgetown.

TOP 10 ALL-DECADE SPORTING EVENTS for #4, #3, #2 Countdown
The ReSporter’s 10th thru 5th Best Games are in print now with 4 more to go for your enjoyment.
We will continue to give you a thought process on why each game has been inserted or pigeon holed in their places and would love your feed back if any on that spot on the list.
There will be two more articles with the No. 1 event having the luxury of standing alone while this next group of three starts to get to what, The ReSporter, has below.
#4 BOY’S TRACK & FIELD DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP, During 2018.
Track & Field has a different set of rules than most other sports as these athletes do not compete against just one school during the season.
Yes, there are a lot of individual competitiveness and each of those events are combined for a team to accumulate to see if that school can out point all the other schools that were invited to that particular meet.
When district meets commence, this will take part during two consecutive days where that first day will consist of athletes qualifying for 8 spots while all of the finals will be finished on that slate before that second outing that will finish with one of the most exciting events in the 1600 meter relay.
Canyon Lake had been playing 2nd fiddle or worse ever since that first Hawk track year to the Fredericksburg Billies. The Billies have such a tradition in this sport that they seem to have everyone in their school competing.
That is the reason for their success with this sport….you do not have to finish 1st or 2nd in each event but if you consistency have students entered for that last day of competition then those lower place events can add up to scoring many points for what had been a monopoly on winning a district championship.
During the 2018 season CL did not have more athletes than Fredericksburg they just had enough that would off-set all their athletes on a day that came down to that last 1600 meter relay for a Hawk win.
After that first day of competition, Fredericksburg seemed to have everything working in their favor once again as they would enter their 2nd day with a lead after all the Field Events.
This night would come down to that final relay with the Billies having a 2 point lead that would compel CL to finish ahead of Fredericksburg and that would leave this Hawk team with a District Championship in a sport dominated by the team dressed in red.

#3 GIRL’S BASKETBALL Win over Wimberley that helped Qualify for first Playoff Spot.
This event will be one of those that will have to be taken on faith as there will not be many people in the Hawk Nation that would recall this game.
The Tschoepe’s will have to be cornered in the stands as they watch their final edition of Student Athletes that have played for Canyon Lake. As Chelsea (their final entrant) continues her final year playing basketball for the Hawks.
Yes, it was before The ReSporter started and not being able to supply a link to read about how this year was able to put CL on the map.
During this time frame, making the playoffs, would be a tougher gig as the Top 3 would qualify a team for a post-season berth as the top 4 teams qualifying has been entrenched for the past 7 years.
This Hawk team had players you will see on the All-Time Top 10 for Basketball and one of those players was a Senior and had just one year for her 2009-10 school season.
Ashley Pfaff was one, if not the best, all-round player for Ladies Basketball.
If you needed points, then she would get her adding machine and pour in 20 or more points. Pfaff averaged 21 points during district play that season.
For Season Best Records the Hawks had a slew of players to etch their name on this All-Time List.
ALL-TIME SEASON STATS 2010 LADY HAWKS BASKETBALL Season Points Rebounds Field Goals Ashley Pfaff 493 2nd Tiffany Tschoepe 282 2nd Ashley Pfaff 151 2nd Jessica McMurray 266 9th Ashley Pfaff 199 10th Jessica McMurray 114 6th Tiffany Arredondo 240 11th 3 Point Goals Made Free Throws Assists Ashley Pfaff 39 4th Ashley Pfaff 153 2nd Tiffany Arredondo 92 2nd Tiffany Arredondo 79 5th Ashley Pfaff 89 3rd Tiffany Tschoepe 67 7th Jessica McMurray 59 6th Megan Browning 49 8th Steals Ashley Pfaff 96 2nd Tiffany Arredondo 67 11th
The Texans were not a slouch in this sport as they had dominated in Volleyball and those same dominated players would put their skills on the basketball court as they would be not just a ,one sport phenom, but an accomplished athlete. That had Wimberley winning district even with a loss to the Hawks in this final district game.
If you need more proof, then have a conversation with Coach Kim Clemons who was one of those players that had helped her school win consistently in both sports when she played for Wimberley before these games were played.
In this game with Wimberley, the Hawks, needed a win that would give them a chance to buy those play-off T-shirts.
The Lake had come into this final district affair with an undefeated home record. This team was nick-named the Maalox Hawks after having a bevy of games coming down to the wire for a win or loss.
“We knew the players that would shoot the three,” Head Coach Steve Dement said. “We decided to bring in our tall girls to front Watson (Lea Watson finished 2nd in scoring behind CL’s Ashley Pfaff in district play) and have our back player slide over and guard her from the back.”
Watson got in foul trouble with 6 minutes remaining in that final period with the Texans up, 37-33. When she returned, the game was tied at 41 all with 2:11 left on the clock.
With Wimberley up, 43-42, the Texan’s would miss both free throws with the Hawks getting the rebound with :45 seconds left on the clock.
Enter Junior Megan Browning with a three pointer and a 45-43 Hawk lead with :15 seconds remaining.
But the Texans would tie the score with one second on the clock putting this game into overtime.
Jessica McMurray’s short jumper with 1:31 left in overtime was the first points in the extra period for both teams and a, 47-45 Hawk Lead.
The Texan’s scored the next four points on a 3-pointer and from the foul line to lead, 49-47 with :38 seconds left.
Enter Tiffany Arredondo with a bank shot 3-pointer from the corner with 4.8 seconds left on the clock and a Hawk, 50-49 lead and win.

#2 HAWKS FOOTBALL WIN over SEALY TIGERS in 2011 SEASON
For pure excitement this had to be one of Canyon Lake’s most entertaining games.
It had a back and forth atmosphere and a great comeback…great comeback…and great comeback.
Did The ReSporte rmention that the Hawks came back in this win?
There has been a lot of great wins in the short history of Hawk Football but this win was great based on how early the the Genesis lf Canyon Lake sports but being the cowbell sport this game has to rank high.
The link below will let you go back in time and read about a game where clutch plays were piled on one after another for what The ReSporter has as #2 on the list.
Hope you enjoy the recount of the game for best in the Decade Count Down!!

Canyon Lake had a memorable week after this year’s Boy’s Soccer competed in the first State Tournament in grand fashion.
Yes, the result was not what we wanted but the excitement and hoopla was something that is not a common occurrence around these parts. The Hawks scored first but could not hold that lead in losing, 2-1 to Midlothian Heritage.
What a year for these athletes and one that will be remembered as there is now a blazed trail for other CL sports in having goals of achieving.
All of those Soccer Battles were to the wire and was action filled and The ReSporter as well as the Hawk Nation would like to say Congratulations and thanks for the ride.
Softball finished their season last Tuesday in a loss to Bandera and will see if they can re-group for next year as this group of ladies lost just one Senior and should have plenty of weapons when next year starts coming.
Baseball is still in the heat of battle as they are in ‘heated’ battle with Fredericksburg as these two will have a big game this Tuesday with the winner enjoying an inside track for that final play-off spot in the standings.
Come out and watch the last sporting event on CL’s Nest for a game that will start with the first pitch at 7:00pm.
Track & Field will be in action on Friday and Saturday when the Region Qualifiers will see if they can qualify for the State Meet in May.
The ReSporter will share an article this week on how other athletes from around South Texas did in similar events that your Hawks will be running or throwing or jumping.
Go Hawks!!
