Hawks Volleyball, Win One and Lose One

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

Canyon Lake Volleyball (10-7) finishes a three team round robin, 1-1 in La Vernia on Tuesday night.

Head Volleyball Coach Nicole Creek

Their first match was a win over San Antonio McCollum in four games. A second game disappearance was the only flaw.

The Hawks did win the next two games convincingly, 25-16 and 25-19.

Senior Marisa Ellis once again had a triple double leading the team with 14 kills and contributing 14 assists and 11 digs in this battle.

Freshman Halley McKnight lead the assist count with 19 and Sophomore Hayley Melone finished with 24 digs.

Hawks Win Consolation at Arabian Volleyball Tourney

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

Canyon Lake did it again by coming through on the opposite bracket in Devine last Thursday and Saturday.

This was a little different from the Wimberley Tournament in that Canyon Lake at least won one game on the first day of action.

The win was also against a District 27 foe from Bandera. The first day did have a much more competitive atmosphere coming from Canyon Lake as all the games were hard fought and there was no contest that was a roll over.

Once again the Hawks ruled the second day with another three game sweep.

Volleyball: Hawks on Four Game Winning Streak

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

The Hawks have the Eagles Surrounded

Canyon Lake controlled Johnson City from the opening serve and were never behind their Eagle counterpart.

The Hawks won their last three games in Wimberley last week-end and continued on that hot streak as they continued to apply the pressure in this match up.

“We are serving more aggressively and we seem to be getting better each game,” Head Coach Nicole Creek said. “We can’t give them any thing easy.”

Last Tuesday during the opening games of this season, Canyon Lake was having a hard time getting their serves over the net, which would result in easy points for the opposition. Coach Creek seemed to be happy with how this part of the game is improving.

Twelve Aces served by the Hawks is case and point to that improvement.

CL Wins Bronze Bracket in Wimberley’s Tex-Fest Tourney

Canyon Lake poses after winning the Bronze Bracket in Wimberley

The Hawks started slow but finished with a rush by winning their final three games to salvage a Bronze Bracket Championship last weekend in Wimberley.

Tex-Fest Volleyball Tournament has been on Canyon Lake’s schedule every year and the Hawks were able to get some much needed game experience and end the tournament with a three game winning streak.

“After a tough first day we battled back to sweep all three teams we played on Saturday,” Head Coach Nicole Creek said.

Canyon Lake beat Salado, 25-23 and 25-22 on Saturday. With so many teams in tournaments, teams advance in a best of three series instead of the best of five normally during the rest of the season.

In the Salado game, Marisa Ellis lead the team with 12 kills and finished second scoring 14 assists. Ellis has taken on a more dominant role in the attacking part of her game as this season starts in it’s infancy.

Freshman Halley McKnight has shown enough so far this season to suggest there will be improvement as she also had 15 assists, leading the Hawks.

Two other newcomers, Junior transfer Trena Lorett and Sophomore Hayley Malone finished one and two with seven and six digs in the game.

Canyon Lake taking control in first game of the Season against Liberty Hill

The Hawks started their new year with a split in a three team round robin last Tuesday night at the Canyon Lake gymnasium.

Both games were five game sets that left the exhaustive fans feeling good about this team.

Canyon Lake beat Liberty Hill in the first match: 23-25, 17-25, 25-15, 27-25, 15-5.

The first two games would be games that Coach Nicole Creek could use for instructing future team how not to play.

“First game jitters,” Head Coach Creek said. “We had great serving and clutch hitting to end this game.”

The second game of the set, had only three points scored that was not a result of Liberty Hill losing the serve. The hole dug by the Hawks was too deep to see any light to climb out of.

Canyon Lake had their first lead starting the third game going ahead 1-0. Marisa Ellis was the server when CL actually had a rally of five points that gave the Hawks a six point lead of 14-8.

Canyon Lake Gets a Dig for another Season

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

While watching the Alumni/Canyon Lake volleyball game, you would

Head Coach Nicole Creek

of been amazed the Alumni won a game.

A simple fact about this event, Canyon Lake Varsity won for the first time against their former teammates. Was this a bad day for the former students or was CL Varsity just playing a better game?

A lot of players return with a sprinkling of newbies might have a team that will rival the playoff teams in recent years.

Katie Williams is one of those Seniors that will want a better result than what happened to last year’s club.

Canyon Lake Senior Recognition

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

The ReSporter would like to finish this year’s sports campaign by

Senior Missy Romero

recognizing three Seniors that were covered by this website.

Last Thursday night, Canyon Lake Coaches announced their winners at a Banquet for the Track, Baseball, Golf, and Softball teams during the spring awards night.

Missy Romero, Matt Magness, and Zach Henshaw were the three students recognized by their Coaches as Seniors that were the outstanding athlete for this academic year.

Missy Romero literally kept the Softball program in the circle the past four years.

Softball was one of the last team sports to make the playoffs last season, when they not only qualified for the playoffs, but was the first team to ever finish second in District competition.

Romero has set the standard for CL Softball for years to come, as she signed on with Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi before the season was in full gear.

Semi Final Loss for BCS can’t Dampen Season

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Bracken Christian (20-6) lost to Huntsville Alpha Omega, 14-25, 25-20, 20-25, and 19-25, Friday at Providence High School in downtown San Antonio in the Semi Final State Playoffs.

The first game was all Lions after jumping out to a lead Bracken could not match.

“Making errors that we don’t typically make,” Head Coach Shaunna Teuton said. “We could not do anything effectively.”

Alpha Omega had three rallies of five points as the Lions took advantage of the same offensive strategy that Bracken had been doing to their opponents during their 12 game winning streak.

The serve had been a catalyst for BCS, yet it was the Lions that were serving notice it might be a long game for the Warriors.

Coaches Corner: Bracken Volleyball’s Shaunna Teuton

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Bracken Christian will be heading to San Antonio this Friday for a game in the Semi-Finals against Huntsville Alpha Omega.

The Warriors are going in with a 12 game winning streak and seem to be playing at a high level for the Final Four match-ups.

ReSporter: How would you evaluate where the team is going into this weekend?

Teuton: “I thought this is where we could be when we started this season…the players have played to their potential…it talks about how far we have come and how hard we have worked, but we know we need to fight go get the Championship.”

BCS Volleyball Aces are Wild, next stop Final Four

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

The Bracken Christian Warriors won an epic battle against San Antonio Lutheran in a five game set, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 24-26, and 15-7.

Head Coach Shaunna Teuton mentioned after the win on Tuesday that if Briana Martinez was able to suit up, then she was going to play and definitely serve.

“We knew what we had to do going into the fifth game,” Coach Teuton said. “I asked them (team) whoever wanted most….Bre (Martinez) was the momentum turner.”

Miss Martinez had spent some time during the week in the hospital.

“I did not have very much energy,” Martinez sighed. “Adrenaline kicked in and I knew I needed to get in a groove.”

The Coach for Lutheran tried to freeze Martinez twice during the eight point rally.

“I just have to think about how to do my form in my head,” Martinez served an ace. “It is all a mental game.”
