Deer Season Came Early in Hawk’s, 53-50 Win

Deer Season came early at the Hawk Nest as Canyon Lake (6-2) (5-1) was able to outscore Kerrville Tivy (8-1) (5-1), 53-50.
With this win, The Lake, now has the tie breaker with both teams tied at the top, Fredericksburg (5-1) and Tivy.
Those same two schools will meet next week and that would give one team 2 losses. A CL win over Austin LBJ would have a tie with that winner and CLHS with the tie-breaker.
In beating a #4 ranked team would make this the best win in Hawk history over that Sealy win back in 2011. That contest was not a district battle which accentuates why this victory would out shine that game.

This contest could not have started any better after CL’s defense held Tivy to a punt on their first possession.
Then starting on our 44 yard line…it would take the Hawks just 3 plays for their first lead when QB Jace Wheeler found Peyton King for 24 yards and a, 6-0 advantage. This drive also featured a Wheeler 24 run helping on this quick score.
Kerrville’s next drive was stopped with a fumble after pass play to the Lake’s 8 yard line.
Now a Hawk 92 yard drive 10 play drive had Carson Walker score on a push-tush and a Hawk, 12-0 lead.

This drive featured a Thomas Inmon catch and weave-run for 35 yards after a 20 yard run for Aiden Boals.
The Antlers would not be denied on their next drive that had 2 plays and 53 yard pass play, 12-7.
The Lake would match that drive with 2 plays that Ryan Rena scampered 35 yards and then a 50 yard strike to Kobe Halverson.
Wheeler would finish this game with 418 yards through the air with a trio of receivers that have been mentioned above. Now Wheeler has the top 4 passing games with a 2024 Veterans Memorial game (455 yds) at the top.

That first quarter ended with CLHS having an 18-14 lead as the Hawks scored on all of their drives but the last one ended with the clock reading 0:00 and halftime festivities.

The Lake has been a 2nd Half team starting with their win over Taylor and this battle would not be any different.
Canyon Lake started with the ball to start the second half and once again scoring on a 90 yard drive. This was a 9 play set of downs that was highlighted when Rena ran up the gut for 42 yards and the Hawks would score 2 plays later when Canyon Buchmann bulldozed, with help from the offensive line, for a score and a lead back for CL, 39-35.
Kerrville was stopped on their first second half drive on downs and then The Lake’s first interception of this season was emboldened when Tivy took the rock 77 yards and lead, 42-39 on their next play.
CLake’s next drive drained the rest of the 3rd Quarter this time going 90 yards in 14 plays. The first part of this drive was in a methodical method with those first 9 snaps only with a Halverson 11 yard pass.
Then a crucial last 4 plays of this drive had two going for negative yardage leaving your Home Team needing to convert a 3rd down and 25 yards.
A Wheeler 13 yard run set up a more manageable 12 yards needed 4th down that had King open again for 40 yards that had a stripped fumble at the one yard line and King recovering his fumble at the back of the end zone.
A never give up mentality and now The Lake would keep this lead, 46-42 for the remainder of this contest.
Another defensive stop for Canyon Lake and then a 3 play drive and this time it was a King 30 yard touchdown catch with 8 minutes remaining, 53-42 lead.
A cliff hanger was still hanging on after Tivy scored their last touchdown with 2:49 left on the clock.

Canyon Lake could not secure a first down which left the Antlers with the ball having right at 2 minutes remaining.
CL’s punt put Kerrville needing to drive 89 yards for a win or tying field goal.
Tivy started with a 30 yard pass play but that would be their only explosive play when Halverson who finished with 10 catches for 159 yards had his best reception being an interception leaving Canyon Lake with a Victory Formation.
CLHS finished with 700 yards of offense as Rena came in and played an admirable game rushing for 192 yards with receivers, King (180 yards), Halverson (159 yards) and Inmon (73 yards) got the most deer and would have Wheeler able to come and mount those Antlers at The Lake’s Field-House.
Way to GO LAKE!
