Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Head Coach Lloyd Fields

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, was there a difference in this week’s of practices after losing your first game last week?

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “No difference, this is probably the most unemotional group of players that I have ever had at Bracken…they are very workmanlike. These guys are in survival mold and are just fortunate that they are still playing.”

The ReSporter: You mention the number of players you have, what does that do for the players as they are playing, in many cases, the whole game?

Coach Fields: “There is no middle ground with these players. They are unscathed….their lack of numbers is starting to catch up with then but this is a new era in Bracken as we have many players that are just trying to stay healthy. This is all we got and the younger players are all trying.”

The ReSporter: How are you approaching this week’s game with New Braunfels Christian?

Warriors Could not Defend the Defenders Losing, 60-14 to Veritas

Bracken closes in on Austin Veritas

Bracken closes in on Austin Veritas

Bracken Christian did not have a defense to stop this Veritas Defenders team and lost in a mercy game, 60-14 last Friday night.

“They (Veritas) were so physical and they just dominated us,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said.

BCS has scored less than 14 points only three other times as they tied with four other games with their 14 points scored against Veritas. Bracken has never been shut-out since they started playing 101 games ago.

Bracken is now 44-5 when holding an opponent under 200 yards rushing as Veritas only mustered 92 rushing on this night. However, in that same vein, this Veritas game is now ranked No.1 in yardage given up via the pass. The Defenders were able to put up 333 yards passing on BCS with bomb after bomb in this loss.

On a positive note, the Warriors did show life on offense, albeit too late, when the second half started and Noah Boriack was able to get loose for a 43 and 70 yard touchdown runs. The unfortunate part of that nugget was having just three more plays to take a snap and not being able to capitalize.

 Longest Runs in BCS History:
 Player Yards Year Game
Grady Achilles 78 2010 Austin Hill Country
Eli Achilles 78 2012 Sugar Land Logos
Eli Achilles 78 2012 SA The Winston
Noah Boriack 74 2013 San Marcos Hill Country
 Grady Achilles 71 2011 Houston Emery-Weiner
Noah Boriack 70 2014 Austin Veritas
Austin Wilkinson 70 2011 New Braunfels Christian

Boriack also passed the 1,000 yard barrier for this year in rushing, as now will zero in on a 2,000 yard season.

That total has only been reached three times by Grady Achilles (twice) and Eli Achilles.

Bracken started this night being just short by one yard in getting a first down on the Warriors first drive, when Christian De Leon almost made the first down marker.

Warriors hold on critical 4th down play in the first quarter.

Warriors hold on critical 4th down play in first quarter when Christian De Leon comes in for stop

That miss allowed Veritas to drive down to the Warrior one yard line and being stopped without a score.

That drive had Coy Zunker and Zack Fasenmeyer both stopping Veritas’ runners for minus four yards on consecutive plays.

After another dry run on their next drive, Bracken punted for just the sixth time this season and Austin Veritas would score with 27 seconds left on that first quarter clock.

Bracken was stopped again after reaching the two yard line and still could not punch it in after Brady Beene was sacked on a third down play.

It took Veritas just two plays to score this time as Snow rumbled on a 69 yard pass play on what would be all the points needed for a win on this night, 16-0.

Jeff Camp was able to catch three passes, but for the most part the passing game went silent after a 32 yard gain for Camp which was 71% of Bracken’s total passing yardage and that is counting eight more passes caught on this night. A silent 1.6 yards per catch to cap off the 45 passing yards.

“We needed better blocking,” Senior Receiver Camp said. “We need to play with more heart…we need to play like man and not little boys….it all goes back to needing to tighten up and find the players that have more heart.”

Bracken started the second half down 24 points and had held the Defenders on their first drive.

The Warriors would respond on a one play, Boriack up the middle, for 70 yard play. This happened on both times Boriack touched the ball in the second half, his other run covered 43 yards and both had him sprinting to the goal line with no resistance.

BCS would have only 5 offensive plays in the third quarter and scoring on two one play drives. A fumble on what would be their last drive would ice the game after that costly mistake.

The miscue that plagued Bracken the most in that second half was allowing Veritas to have success on their on-side-kicks and giving this dangerous team more chances with a chance to score. While keeping Bracken’s offense on the shelf.

That Veritas did to the tune of scoring on five of their final six times with the ball and running away with this game.

Having a good kicking game was another way of tacking on more than enough points to keep this Warrior team without much hope.

In a nut shell, Bracken just did not have enough fire power as Austin Veritas showed up with more than enough players, giving them a huge advantage as this game wore on.

“Playing with 8 guys versus 18 was too much to overcome,” Coach Fields said. “We knew this would happen sooner or later.”

One last little stat, both teams scored 50 points in that third quarter which has only been topped two times previously. The down side was those two other games had the Warriors inflicting most of that damage.

Bracken Warrior Take Care of SA Winston, 49-0

Saturday, September 20th, 2014

Bracken Christian finds themselves, 4-0 after finishing their non-district part of the schedule when they walloped SA The Winston, 49-0.

Christian DeLeon has been one of many surprises for Coach Lloyd Fields this year

Christian DeLeon has been one of many surprises for Coach Lloyd Fields this year

It was also a home game which allowed this Warrior team a chance to play in front of a packed homecoming crowd.

“I am pleasantly surprised we are 4-0,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields started. “I was happy the way we played and anytime you shut out a team, then it is a good football game.”

Bracken Christian has had a good defense to start this season and that will be an integral part of being able to complete this season in November.

“They (Winston) were the most physical team we have played this year,” Coach Fields said. “We will need a week off to heal and this open date came at a good time this year.”

Running Back, Noah Boriack was on his game again this night with 213 yards rushing on just 11 carries. Eight of those 11 carries were over 10 yards in length and in one case also levying some pain along the way.

Bracken Christian Warriors will be playing their 100th game since they first donned an uniform back in 2006.

This Warrior team will also be looking for their 77th victory which for all the math majors, would make figuring out that Bracken would have a 77% winning percentage.

Bracken has had only one losing season which was their first year when that Warrior team could only muster one win. Since that year there has not been a year where eight wins or more had not been reached.
