Bracken Retooling Offense for Breakout Season

Coach Hilgendorf flanked by Sam Hilgendorf and Arnold Adame after Practice

The Seniors that just graduated from Bracken Christian scored 1727 points in their four year career as Warriors. That is .496% of the total points by every other player to ever put a royal blue uniform on.

Reflect now on the job at hand for this year’s football team and what type of pressure they will be under to try and continue this status quo. Is it possible?

That is what the Coaches have been trying to find out for the past two weeks during spring practice.

Let’s start at the top. Eli Achilles will be very pivotal for the Warriors this season. This will be his fourth year taking snaps for BCS.

Achilles has a pretty solid record, 35-4 and he has grown (literally) since that first year as a freshman.

Bracken Christian took 12 athletes to Waco last weekend for the TAPPS State Track

Congratulations to the 12 All State Tracksters

Congratulations to the 12 All State Tracksters

Meet and finished within the top 10 in both the girls and boys team.

Grady Achilles came into the meet with the goal of defending his 100 and 200 Meter Dash. For the third time!

Mission accomplished, as the Senior finished his athletic  career for BCS as one if not the best male athlete for the Warriors.

“Grady has determination,” Head Coach Terri Sanders said. “He is very confident in his ability.”

Achilles seemed to be reaching this year’s meet without the consistency he had enjoyed in previous State Meets.

Bracken Christian Track Team Aims to Run

Not to take anything away from Senior Kevin Knapick, but Bracken Christian will be concentrating more on the Track than the Field part at the State Meet starting this Friday and Saturday in Waco.

Bracken will be competing in the 2A Division and the top four finishers qualified for the right to represent their school before the school year closes.

BCS will have 12 students vying for the chance to bring home more hardware from this track season.

Katy Wilmotte finished first in the 3200 Meter Run at the Regional Meet. Her second place finish in the 1600 Meter Run will also allow her to garner more points for the Team.

Wilmotte finished with a time of 13:09 last year competing as a Sophomore at the State Meet and she qualified two weeks ago with a best time of 12:53 for this season.

The good news is that the 3200 and 1600 Meter Runs will be run on two different days giving those runners time to recoup from that draining race.

“Katy finished third at State last year,” Head Coach Terri Sanders started. “She knows what she is capable of doing and with the right stride and with her confidence will allow her to finish strong.”

Athletic Scholarship with Incarnate Word.

The ReSporter would like to share the numbers this young man accomplished in his four years of playing football for Bracken.

The Seniors that graduate with Achilles had a 44-6 record with three of those six losses as a result of losing in the playoffs.

Let’s take the 2010 season and put Grady’s yardage in perspective.

For the 2010 Year: Grady Achilles scored 62 Rushing Touchdowns and averaged 29.3 yards per TD.

Fourteen of those touchdowns were from 50 yards or longer runs. Grady rushed for 1817 yards on those 62 scores.

Now you can understand how valuable this young athlete was for Bracken Christian.

Head Track Coach Terri Sanders talks BCS Track Season

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

The ReSporter: “You have some returning and transfer athletes this season, what are your

expectations as the season looms this coming Friday?”

Terri Sanders: “Senior Grady Achilles will be returning to compete for his 100m and 200m state championship titles.  He is also a part of a powerful 4×1 relay consisting of Kevin Knapick, Austin Wilkinson and Connor Simmons.  This should be a great relay team! Austin Wilkinson transferred in and is a powerful runner competing in the 4×1, 4×2, 200m and long jump. Kevin Knapick will once again be competing in 4×1, 4×2, 400m and shot and disc. We have a team of 35 track team members who practice hard and I expect very positive results.”

The ReSporter: “What disadvantages do you have with other programs that actually have a track instead of grass and dirt?”

Terri Sanders: “Our disadvantage in not having a track is especially difficult for our relay teams.  It is hard to practice hand offs on grass and expect it to be the same on a track with cleats.  All our other events we make work without the track and it sometimes proves to our advantage in that as we practice on uneven terrain, it makes running on a track seem so much easier!”

BCS Boys almost pull Upset over Waldorf, 40-36

Friday, February 10th, 2012

The Bracken Warriors spotted State Ranked Austin Waldorf to 18 points to start the game before playing even steven the next three quarters.

“Tonight we played with the level of intensity we are capable of playing,” Head Coach James Johnson started.
It is a maturity thing and we had to prove it to ourselves.”

“When we have been beaten so much this season the guys (team) had a ‘we can do this’ after playing a solid second quarter.”

BCS decided to start playing with two seconds left in the first quarter as Conner Higgins sank a baseline floater to start the scoring.

“Coach (James Johnson) wanted to run a pick and row in the second half,” Senior Higgins said. “This year was a lot of fun and we thought we had a chance to make the playoffs.”

BCS Boys get Thin Win over Marble Falls Faith, 35-34

Friday, January 27th, 2012

The Bracken Warriors won a much needed road game on Thursday night at Marble Falls Faith, 35-34.

The game kept fans on the edge of their seats as the final seconds ticked down and smiled on the Warriors.

“Exciting for the fans but nothing either coach will be using as a training aid for future teams,” Head Coach James Johnson said. “We had a very good effort defensively but not much of anything positive to say about the offensive execution.”

With a halftime deficit of seven points, the Warriors came out with a defensive effort Coach Johnson spoke of, “I thought we defended well and that was what saved us.” (more…)
