Canyon Lake is preparing for another season of grid-iron action being a little more than 8 weeks away and counting.

The ReSporter will have an article with Head Coach Sam Parker early next week to help get the Hawk Nation through these summer days.

The Hawks had the 5th best record based on schools that improved their record from the previous season according to Texas Football web-site.

Enjoy going back in time with these former students and LET’S GO HAWKS!

Char Hutson is New Girls Basketball Coach

Thursday, May 29th, 2025

New Head Girl’s Basketball Coach Char Hutson.

A home-grown Hawkster will be taking over the reigns of next year’s Girls Basketball program when Char Hutson was hired as the next Head Coach.

Char has been a behind the scenes coach for basketball~ Softball~Cross Country these past few years.

Char played basketball and softball and graduated in 2018.

The ReSporter: Give us your thoughts on when you put your name in motion and then your thoughts when they said you would be The Coach.

Coach Hutson: “When I first threw my name out there, I had no expectations. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but I also wanted to be prepared for the ‘what if’ so, I started to brainstorm for hours every day during the waiting period about what I would want my own program to look like whether that was this year or further down the road.”

Hutson continued, “When Coach Parker let me know that the position was mine, there were a lot of mixed emotions. I’ve taken a lot of pride in this program as an athlete & now as a coach for the last few years so I was a bit nervous naturally, but I was mostly excited, and then just anxious to get to work with my girls. It’s a huge deal to me considering it’s my first head job, but this is my home, so it means a whole lot more to me than that.”

The ReSporter: You have been an understudy for a few coaches… what have you taken from being their sub-varsity coach?

Coach Hutson: “I’ve been lucky enough to work under 5 head coaches across 3 sports, and really close to a few others during my 3 years at Canyon Lake so I was able to learn a lot in a short amount of time. I’ve been able to see a few things that work that I want to take with me into my own program, but also thankful to have seen a lot of things that I may not want to incorporate in which will be a big help in my opinion. I’m blessed to have been able to learn from so many people, and to continue to learn from the talented coaches around me.”

The ReSporter: Share bout your advantage in already knowing (for the most part) the players that are coming back and what plans you might have in store on offense and defense.

Coach Hutson: “I think that already knowing the girls & a large number of the middle school athletes coming up will be a huge advantage. The most important part of coaching is building relationships with the athletes & I believe I’ve done that fairly well in the position that I was in. It’s going to be an adjustment from being the “fun assistant” to head coach, but the girls seemed to have taken the adjustment really well so far so I’m extremely proud of them. And of course, there will still be fun, that’s just who I am and what the girls will remember most hopefully when they think back on their time here.

Coach Hutson relayed her thoughts on offense/defense, “Offensively, we’ve got a long

           Way to Charr & Go Lake!!

way to go before I really hone into those plans. I’m going to try to utilize my girls where they fit best & put them in the best positions to be successful. Defensively, that will be our focus. I’ve told them since our first day together that the only 2 starters I know of are going to be the best defender & the best rebounder. People can question our skill level, but I don’t want them to ever be able to question our effort & that’s what a good defensive team stems from. If we give our all on defense, then offense will come on its own.”

             Way to Go Char & Hawks!!

The ReSporter: Do you have plans to work in concert with the Mountain Valley Coaches so there is a unity in philosophy and the players not having to learn a new system when they arrive in High School. Are has that already been implemented?

Coach Hutson: “I will definitely be working with the middle school & eventually want both of us to be aligned with our youth leagues as well. I don’t think that our middle school or youth have been given the attention they deserve or need in order for a program to be built here & the culture to really change. Some of my favorite childhood memories were made playing sports at the CRRC, so I’m extremely excited to get back down there on this side of things and do what I can to support them whatever that may look like. Each level feels separated right now and that’s not how it should be in my opinion or how I want it to be. I’m eager to get our youth involved & comfortable on our campus early so they want to be a part of what we have going on here.

The ReSporter: Are you excited?

Coach Hutson: “I know God has opened this door for me and kept me here for a reason, so of course I’m excited. Go Hawks!

The ReSporter: Thanks for already saying my closure already but I will add one extra exclamation point. GO HAWKS!!

Tennis: James Cornell Competes in Singles at State Next Thursday

Saturday, May 10th, 2025

James Cornell after winning Region IV Tennis Singles decided to go eat after tasting victory over his Wimberley opponent. Way to GO JAMES & GO LAKE!

Canyon Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

James Cornell says not too fast Hawk Nation…there is still some more business to take care of.

Cornell won Region IV Tennis Singles in San Antonio last week and will step back on the courts this coming Thursday with a chance to continue this banner campaign.

This has been a good end of season run for Cornell after winning District beating a No. 1 Seeded Wimberley’s Tyler Youens, 6-3, 6-3.

At the San Antonio’s Blossom Tennis Center~ Cornell on his first day of competition won the first round, 6-0 ~ 6-0 and the second round, 6-0 ~ 7-6 which qualified for another day on Thursday against the No. 1 Seed for Region IV out of Tulosa Midway in the Corpus Christi area.

                     GO HAWKS!!

It was more of the same with an 8am start that had Cornell in command again finishing with this conquest, 6-2 ~ 6-3 in the Semi-Finals.

Now the scene would be a repeat of District and Wimberley’s Youens. “He had beat me 3 times before I played him in the district finals,” James Cornell said.

Cornell commented on his game against the No. 1 Seed, “He did not have a big serve so I knew I would be able to place to ball deep…. I had him working a lot and used my peripheral and his feet to know where I could place the ball.”

    Way to GO JAMES & GO LAKE!

Coach Coby Mickey, “James is very good at going side to side with his volley and that certainly helped during this game.”

“I needed to take this first game so bad and I was stoked after the win knowing that I would get to go to State,” Cornell recalled.

Since three players qualify by winning this game qualified Cornell for more tennis next week.

Pitted against Youren for a player who had won those first 3 contests, it would be pivotal and a, 7-5 ~ 6-4 conquest would prove that first district win was not a fluke.

There was still some rough times as Cornell was down in that first set, 4-5 but rebounded for this win, “I was just playing very lazy and Coach (Mickey) told me I was playing pretty lazy, so I was thinking right then and there was not the time for rest and that I would have the whole weekend to rest so I started to play more aggressive and ‘serve and volley’ a lot more….that means to go where you serve the ball and put away a point).”

Put away a point was the point for this comeback and then riding that momentum for his second set victory.

                Go James & GO Lake!

Now Cornell will draw a bye during the first round which should have an advantage giving a chance to see two players and knowing one would be next up.

With Texas being so large it is next to impossible to have an idea of tendencies of players 200-500 miles away and being a top seed having a chance to strategize before their first battle.

What are your thoughts? “Win that first match,” Cornell said excitedly.

Next Thursday @ Annemarie Tennis Center in San Antonio!

The last Hawk Athlete this year has already gone where no other Lake Athlete has gone….Now Go James & GO LAKE!

                             HAWKS 2025 TRACK & FIIELD 26-4A DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

                    Let’s Go Hawks!!

The ReSporter was able to get thoughts from Head Coach Sami Theurer on this just completed track season after having several events during State Meet last week.

This was a banner season with a strong group of incoming freshman added with a well rounded older group of tracksters. This led to CL’s first district championship for the Girls which now matches the Boy’s team from that 2017 season.

There was several Personal Bests posted this season after scoring in two of their State Meet Events with the 4×100 relay and Aubrey Avey finishing 5th in her 300 meter hurdle event.

Below has the personal best pertaining to the All-Time Top 10 Athletes and who is next best in those previous seasons.

Then The ReSporter’s Coaches Corner with Coach Theurer. Enjoy and Way to GO FAST LAKE!

COACHES CORNER

                           Let’s Go Lake!

The ReSporter:  Overall thoughts for this season?

Coach Theurer: “I am uber proud of how hard the girls worked and came together as a team to succeed. They pushed each other everyday at practice and held each other accountable.”

The ReSporter:  How bout a shout out for your Seniors?

Be Authentic with your Hawk Gear & LET’s GO LAKE!

Coach Theurer: “Emorie Jones, Ayren Lightfoot and Hannah Hammer all will be missed, and all in different ways. Emorie is continuing her education and attending Ole Miss. Ayren plans to attend LSU and will walk-on their track team hoping to run for their program as a freshman. She has been on varsity all four years and made it to the state meet every year, either as part of a relay or in the open 400m. Hannah Hammer has been on the varsity team all four years and has been a leader for our Hawk team. She has been to the state meet three years, also on her own and as part of a relay team. She plans to attend school in Arizona to continue her education. Hannah does want to continue her running career as a college athlete.”

             Way to Go FAST Hawks!!

The ReSporter: What will the returning girls be doing to fine tune their craft?

Coach Theurer: “I think it goes without saying…we need to get faster and stronger. Our girls need to be able to compete in field events and then have the stamina and strength to compete and win in the running events as well.”

The ReSporter: Is there any way of improving the discus/shot events to help in adding points in Meets?

Coach Theurer: “Our goal for next season is to have a fully staffed track team, which would include one or two throwing coaches. I think this would make a huge difference. They will be able to recruit some of our athletes and put together a true training program so that our throwers can improve.”

                           Let’s Go Lake!

The ReSporter: You had a lot of Freshman that contributed in major ways.

Coach Theurer: “Not only did the freshmen class contribute on the varsity team, our JV team excelled. This freshmen class of girls is talented and they love to win.”

The ReSporter: What are your plans for this group in keeping them engaged thru the offseason?

Coach Theurer: “I always tell the kids, you have to learn to love the grind if you want to win. Almost all of them play or compete in another sport, so getting them and keeping them in our athletic period during our season is always the goal.”

                                GO LAKE!

The ReSporter: What do you know bout MVMS athletes who will be incoming Freshman?

Coach Theurer: “I have been told that next years incoming freshmen are very athletic and super competitive. Both great qualities to have for all our programs. Looking forward to what they can do and how much they can push our upper classmen.”

The ReSporter: Final thoughts?

 ‘Hawk’ Proud!

Coach Theurer: “This season really pushed our team to stay focused and to continue to train. The State Meet was a huge challenge for the girls (to keep showing up and trying to get better to be consistent on training. And then there is the realization that everyone at the State Meet is fast and strong. We need to train harder and smarter.”

Baseball: Hawks Bi-District Champions Next Uvalde

           Make a Deposit & Go Hawks!  Canyon Lake has penciled in their name to the Area Round when they will face Uvalde in Somerset this Thursday with first pitch at 6:30pm.

There was no doubt of a Bi-District clinching round as The Lake was able to score 4 runs to start this contest and ended up amassing 21 runs while Pitcher’s Carter Williams and Ryder Hopper held this Panther team to one hit.

An errorless game that was helped when the battery struck out 13 in needing two fielding opportunities to finish this round in the win category.

There was a plethora of Hawks (18) who had on opportunity to wedge their way into action who finished with 22 hits that had 8 doubles and a lone home-run off the bat of Williams.

Uvalde (18-7-2) will certainly pose a bigger hurdle than Eastside was able to muster and being ready has to be at the forefront for this Hawk team as they enter this week for getting prepared for this one-game do or die event.

Hawks Pound Panthers in Bi-District Best-of-Three Series

Friday, May 2nd, 2025

Ryan Rena finished with a double & homer in Hawk Pounding of the Panthers.

Canyon Lake run ruled Eastside Memorial, 16-0 with a combined one hitter with starter Carter Williams and Hayes Holladay that finished with 11 total strikeouts during this 5 inning affair.

The Lake had 15 Hawks garnering a hit (17 total) with 7 of those hits doubles (4) or homers (3).

Carter Williams (11) is now one homer away from tying Griffen Williams (12) for a season of taters. Which can be some good talking points at the family dinner table.

Ryan Rena had his 2nd homer this season as he joins Williams as the only two Hawks with multiple round-trippers.

That last homer came off the bat of Gavin Baldera which was his first since little league.

The Lake was held to one run to start the game with an inning ending double play…but that would be the only bad at bat as their next inning had 19 Hawks come to the plate producing 13 runs, 5 singles, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 2 walks and 1 batter who reached on an error.

Gavin Baldera’s home-run was first since little league as Hawks look to sweep Friday!

Williams took the mound that next frame and struck out the side throwing 9 strikes and 4 balls. Pretty efficient way to squelch any thoughts for these Panthers of staging a comeback. Holladay finished the final two innings striking out 4 in the 4th inning (one player reached base after a passed ball and one in the 5th inning.

The Hawks will continue this best-of-three series tomorrow at Nelson Field in Austin with that first pitch at 5:00pm. A rubber match will start 30 minutes later if the Panthers win that opening contest.

Way to Pound the Ball Hawks!!

Lady Hawks: State Track Meet Thursday

Tuesday, April 29th, 2025

                      Aubrey Avey next hurdle is Austin this Thursday!      Go Fast Lake!!

                Let’s Go FAST LAKE!

Lake’s Ladies Track & Field contingent will get going this Thursday as there are several running events in play as this season will end once again in Austin.

This will be a stiff climb as there are some great times that were recorded around the state and the times during the Region IV had some strong winds in each of the events that The Lake qualified.

Senior Hannah Hammer will represent Canyon Lake in the 1600 meter run and Junior Aubrey Avey has excelled in the 300 meter hurdles.

The Hawks will have two Relay teams entered with the 4×100 & 4×200 relays.

4×100 Relay will feature: Avey, Te’a Gonzales, Abigail Lowth, Kennedy Grindle and Savanna Oberholtzer.

4×200 Relay will feature: Oberholtzer, Gonzales, Lowth, Kennedy Grindle and Shana Cutrer

                    Way to Go FAST Hawks!!

This will be the third year where a Lady Hawk will be running in the 1600 meter run as Cadence Patterson (running for Houston University) ran those first two seasons.

A shout out to Ayren Lightfoot who was disqualified in her prelim 400 meter dash where she won this event but had left her lane for a short period which left her without a chance to best her time running in Austin last year.

The Kingsville Region Meet has claimed a lot of previous Hawks from reaching State as it had been a killing field for many years.

This will be the largest (in numbers) to reach this ultimate final meet with 6 ladies ready to make The Lake Nation Proud.

Below, The ReSporter has times for the Hawk qualifiers along with the athletes marks from those other 3 Regions. The running events will start at 5:00pm this Thursday.

‘Little Things’ Become ‘BIG THINGS’ in Lake’s Win Over Billies, 3-2

Sunday, April 27th, 2025

         HAWK DOG PILE after walk-off win over Billies for berth to Playoffs! GO LAKE!

                      Way to GO LAKE!

Little things result in big rewards after a Hawk walk-off fielder’s choice scored the winning run in bottom of the 7th frame to put The Lake in Playoffs beating Fredericksburg, 3-2.

Those little things would arise when a savvy Pitcher Carter Williams pointed to a sacrifice bunt having an opponent running the foul line to first base on the inside.

That sacrifice bunt was nullified and put the runner back on first base. What happened next? How bout a 5-1-3 double play ending the first inning. That same incident happened again in the 5th inning taking away having a player in scoring position that had a Williams’ **strikeout** of the next Billie and a ground out to end that inning.

                      Let’s GO HAWKS!!

**(Williams continues to excel this school year as this 3-Sport freak has broken more records than the Beatles as he reached 118 strikeouts this season besting Tyler Pauly’s 94 during his 2021 campaign.)

Want more? How bout playing a 6’3 first baseman (Ryder Hopper) who was able to catch high throws in the first from Ryan Rena with both throws needing a tag out which was played out twice during that second inning and was sandwiched with another Williams’ strikeout.

In the bottom of that same inning, Bryce May was hit by pitch and then stole 2nd and advanced on a wild pitch being 90 feet away for an easy rbi single off the bat of Rena for CL’s first lead, 1-0.

Both teams had 4 runs scored by players who were hit by a pitch and that final Lake run came around to score after reaching base on an error.

Then Hayes Holladay advanced to 2nd base on a Gram Simpson single and advanced on a passed ball that did not ‘pass’ but stayed underneath the catcher to put the winning run 90 feet from home plate.

Williams then hit a grounder to 2nd base that had Holladay sprinting home for a walk-off playoff berth.

             Way to Stay in Shape Hawks!

Ohhh…before celebrating this win, one of those most important ‘little things’ happened at the top of the 7th inning.

With one out a Billies player reached base on a very rare catcher’s interference call that was followed by a double that bounced over the fence keeping the Billies runner from advancing home.

With one out, a pinch bunter, was next up and after two missed bunt attempts that had the first being a suicide squeeze but a bang-bang play led to an out….wait not an out….the call was reversed and player was called safe at third.

‘Hawk’ Proud!!

Next pitch? A Strikeout for the 2nd out but presented the Billies with their best hitter at the plate who Coach Escamilla intentionally walked loading the bases.

A lot of ‘little things’ happenings but one last ‘little thing’ would help put The Lake’s shortest player (but BIG in Stature) climbing the ladder on a line drive to second baseman Simpson for that final out saving at least two runs.

‘Little Things’ would add to be ‘BIG THINGS’ in this Hawk win that now has The Lake playing for a Bi-District crown against Austin Eastside Memorial Panthers next week!

Let’s GO LAKE!

Hawk’s Baseball Still Alive in, 7-0 Win over Bandera

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025

Ryder Hopper doing clean-up with his 7th inning finishing job in win over Bandera. GO LAKE

Hit Man says way to get rid of those Pests Hawks!

Canyon Lake passed their first test for this week of games with two more remaining to realize a chance to play in the post-season.

The Lake started this contest scoring 3 runs in their first two frames which would turn out to be plenty enough for this victory.

Carter Williams and Ryder Hopper combined on a two hitter for this much needed shut-out win. Williams helped his outing with a towering homer that left no doubt after it left his bat that had the Bulldog left fielder morphing into a fan as he stood and watched the flight of this ball that threatened some trees 20-30 feet behind the fence.

The top of the batting order administered much of the damage with Gram Simpson and Michael Anderson joining Williams with two hits a piece/5 runs/4 rbi’s that had a double for Anderson added to that moonshot. Add 3 walks from this trio and you can see how that damage turned out to be lethal.

                         GO LAKE!

More good news was having Navarro beating Fredericksburg which was a welcome sight after hearing the Hawk crowd yelling their approval when it was learned Navarro had taken a 4-0 lead in that game in the stands.

Two more hurdles this Friday with the same scenario needed for a chance for a play-in contest with the Billies this Saturday.

Just taking care of business and prepare for a joyous extra game or time to wash the uniform scenario.

Let’s GO LAKE!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Week @ The Lake is starting to thin out with sports coming to an end but still enough for the Hawk Nation to take note first giving a shout out to CLake’s Softball team who reached the playoffs and will be playing this Friday at Cedar Park taking on Lago Vista who finished first in District 25-4A.
There was one common opponent….Marble Falls who beat Canyon Lake but these Mustangs were beaten by the Vikings.
It will be a one game playoff for a chance to advance into the Area Round. Let’s Go Lake!
Baseball needed a split in their series against Fredericksburg by winning their Friday must-win game, 14-6. This game had a lot of bats producing multi run innings which will set the stage for The Lake needing to sweep Bandera…a loss will eliminate the Hawks. Some scoreboard watching will be a pastime for Hawk fans who will be rooting for Navarro in hopes they will be able to sweep the Billies.
Be Authentic with your Hawk Gear & LET’s GO LAKE!
It is a simple math needing to sweep and your counterpart needing to be swept. If those ingredients come to fruition then Canyon Lake will have a play-in contest with Fredericksburg this Saturday. That will be known as soon as possible for Hawk fans to make plans for that hopeful moment.
The Lady Hawk Track Team finished 2nd place at their Region Meet in Kingsville and will now have a good contingent of Ladies still training for their final season meet in Austin.
That State Meet will be May 1st and The ReSporter will have an article later this week to help set the stage on what this Hawk team will need in order to finish this season strong.
Also, notice on the above dates, Mountain Valley MS Softball and Baseball will start their short season with an away game at Smithson Valley MS on Thursday and then will be at the Hawk Nest this coming Saturday with games starting at 10am.
A good week for The Lake!
