Canyon Lake lost to a worthy opponent in the 2nd round of their Volleyball Area Game in Smithville succumbing to a Needville sweep, 26-28, 16-25 and 18-25.

“We had a few more weak spots than they did,” Head Coach Kimberley Paisley quipped. “They are ranked for a reason….but overall we had a great and wonderful season.”

This sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays left the Hawks with a 26-13 record and some proud players on a good season.

That first set was worth the price of admission as Canyon Lake was on, while having two set points for a chance of a win that just escaped the Hawk’s grasp.

Canyon Lake will advance to their next round after sweeping the Texans, 3-0 in Johnson City on Tuesday night in Bi-District play.

“We had to get over our mental block in facing Wimberley,” Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley said. “I just wanted the girls to start finishing like they did in the first set and pushing for points.”

Volleyball: Seniors are Ready

Canyon Lake will have another successful year no matter the result of this year’s Tuesday game in their first round against Wimberley in Johnson City.

This group of Seniors have been with Coach Kimberley Paisley for the first 4 years and with that has come a certain bond with the players and their coach.

These Seniors even had one of their own start her high school career on the varsity 4 years ago as Regan Mickey had already shown the tools that Coach Paisley knew that was needed in getting this team to the playoffs.

Now for the last 3 years, the Seniors will enter the playoffs in all of those years as Mickey was also a part of the last team to not win the required number of district games to qualify in 2013.

That year did start with some quality wins as the Hawks went into that year of district games with a decent, 16-10 record.

Those district games took a toll on CL as they were able to win just one game against Bandera that certainly would leave a bad taste and a good dose of humbleness as preparation would start early for rectifying that finish.

Canyon Lake has not turned in their uniform after the regular season since that year as the Hawks have now supported a balmy, 88-32 record and a turn-a-round district record of, 27-5 showing. This is an 85% winning percentage for the games that count.

Those previous 3 years was not something you would write home about as CL had a 45-69 record during those years and even worse district ledger of 5-27.

So from 5-27 to a 27-5, this Senior group has helped turn a program to the positive and will now start their next set of games with those win or go home consequences.

In the last three campaigns the Hawks have beaten 5A schools 16 times with only 5 losses. Canyon Lake has a winning record against 6A programs with a 17-13 tally during that same time period.

Unbeatable Wimberley has a 3 game losing streak to Canyon Lake with the Hawks having a chance of increasing that to 4 games this Tuesday.

There are so many good things coming from the Volleyball teams as Junior Varsity and Freshman had successful years as well.

These are good times as Canyon Lake will now implore the Hawk Nation to show on Tuesday night and help support elevate their game with a joyous return home.

The game this Tuesday will be covered by Canyon Lake Broadcasting and the broadcast start time at 7:15pm.

Go Hawks and Congratulations to this Year’s Senior Class!! Now go beat the Texans!!

Volleyball’s Hawks Top 4 and Playoff Information

Friday, October 28th, 2016

The ReSporter has secured the final District 28-4A stats for this season and would like to give the Hawk Nation some information for the upcoming Playoff news.

Wimberley will be the opponent and the game will have the first serve starting at 7:00pm on November 1st at Johnson City High School gym. So this is the time to have all hands on deck as the Lady Hawks will need all the support available for this contest.

Playing against Wimberley will be a chore as this school’s middle name is ‘Playoff’, as Canyon Lake will attempt to knock the Texans from the playoff roster in the first game which has not happened to Wimberley since the last century. It is not known the date but this club was winning State Championships in the late 1990’s.

A tall order but with a win already under their belt in games this season with the Texans, it can be said that this Hawk team will be ready for this battle.

Volleyball: Coaches Corner with Kimberley Paisley

Head Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley

Head Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley

The ReSporter: In comparison to the last 2 playoff teams, what is it about this team that gives you an idea of how they will approach the tournament?

Coach Paisley: “The Varsity teams from the last 2 years, were made of some astounding athletes with raw talent! They worked hard and were fighters! This year’s team is made of determined and relentless athletes, therefore I know they will fight until the end. I’m excited to see where this team takes us in the postseason!”

The ReSporter: How important was it to have a convincing win against Bandera?

Coach Paisley: “After the loss to Fredericksburg, we had a discussion about “Doing Your Job” and “What is your job?” This conversation combined with a great practice lead us to a win over Bandera and set the tone. This momentum from the match and ending district in 2nd place will launch us positively into the playoffs.”

CL Hawks JV Football Juniors Lead Way over Steele, 22-6

Story by Cory Martelli

The CL JV middle line backer Micheal Harwell blitzed right up the middle on Cibolo Steele’s first offensive play for a 6 yard sack and that was a precursor of how the game would go for the D -1 6A JV (B) Steels football team. “ I’m glad I’m here getting the reps on JV to make myself better player on Varsity, just anything to make me a better football player” spouted mike linebacker Harwell. The Hawks held Steele to a paltry 12 yards in the first half as the offense swallowed up the clock during the first half of play with two continuous drives.

Steele’s size and speed was halted during the first half as the first two possessions went three and out with two booming punts of 42 and 45 yards.

However, that just gave the Hawks more room to run the Slot “T” offense to the discouragement of the Steele’s defense.  Steele did not have a clue as to effectively halt an offense which most likely anyone playing with a helmet had ever seen before. On several occasions Caleb Almond or Rolando Maronge ran right by linebackers who were looking the other way, a true sign of a well run Slot –T offense.

As with most 5A and 6A schools, never see a Slot-T offense, as most larger schools in that divisional range run a spread of sorts or variances thereof. Seeing a well run Slot-T can be confusing when trying to defend against it for the first time.
